I live in Germany and I thought that all modern cars in the world would have that safety feature. I used to put my hand there when I was little to test if it had a safety feature and basically all cars I tried this on in the last 15 years all had this safety feature.

As someone who had an entire car door fully close on their wrist as a kid, kids r just weirdly resilient so im sure in most cases they don’t break a finger. Im still surprised that I didn’t break anything when it happened

Just a few constructive comments: The diameter of the oak should be comparable to the human finger bone since their intrinsic mechanical properties are similar (per the nerdy paper) to see if it really would break. Also the dried human finger bones slipped from position because they were disarticulated (not attached). The definitive test would be a cadaver finger, but not saying you can *easily* buy that one on the Internet!

I actually did get my fingers caught in a car window once. So basically I was with my dad in the car and he had to go talk with someone outside while I stayed alone in the car. I was I think 6 years old,the child-lock wasn’t on so I could move the window up and down as I pleased. I wanted to know what would happened if I DIDNT pull my fingers away. So I tried it. My fingers got incredibly stuck and it hurt like hell,I had a bruise on 4 fingers for a few weeks.

Happened to me. Was trying to let my daughter out of the car and she pressed the car window to close while my hand was (for no reason at all) holding the window. Felt a really sharp pain cause it caught my middle and ring finger dead centre. Had pain for 2 to 3 days but i was feeling a bump on my ring finger at the place it was caught for a good month or two. Never went to get an x-ray to see what damage it caused.

I think it's pretty great that the safety system exists at all. Why not? It costs nothing and it saves fingers occasionally.

Fun fact, toddler bones are softer and more malleable than adult bones. I only know this because I accidentally closed my kid sister's fingers in a screen door one time. She had just turned 2. And it wasn't like... a quick slam and the door reopened quickly. No, she had her hand on the hinge side of the door, not the latch side. So, the door closed completely and stayed shut. Her fingers were between the metal door (just above the bottom hinge) and the door frame. The latch closed so she was stuck there screaming until an adult ran over and opened the door again. The ER doctor said that she was young enough that her bones weren't completely solid yet so they just kind of flexed instead of breaking. The doctor was more worried about the cut than a broken bone. He could have just been a bad doctor. I don't know. But it didn't break her finger bones. It just gave her some bruising and a tiny cut on one finger. She was fine after a few days. She is 30 now and doesn't even remember it.

when i was around 6 i liked to put my fingers out the window. one day my mom went to roll up the window and for some reason i didnt move my fingers, so my they got trapped. since i was in the back seat my mom couldn't see what was happening, she just thought i was throwing a tantrum over the window being shut, so she kept pulling the window lever thing full force to try and shut the window (shes really strong by the way, i dont say that lightly). she noticed eventually when she wondered why the window was stuck for so long and it hurt but my fingers were completely fine. even though it wasnt an electric window i think i can safely say car windows can not break your bones.

It depends on what car you have because I remember having my arm outside the car window and my mom rolled the window up without knowing my arm were outside the window and it didn't harm my arm

Twice I've car doors closed on my finger. It feels like every nerve in your body fires. It's like you instantly become aware of everything - instantly awake! In fact I'd go as far to say you may even reach enlightenment

Fun fact: if you close the door on your finger they’ll come out mildly bruised however for those of you who dont have fingers you are safe

I remember once as a young, young child when I was about 4-6 years old I once had my fingers sticking out of the car window for fun. One day, my mom is about the drive me & my sisters to school when I had my finger tips just chilling in the window when, without hesitation, my mom rolls up the window &- Being a still getting to know what danger is child- I decided to let my fingers rise with the window. Only did I realized that I had made a mistake, is when my mom stopped rolling up the window but only after hearing my slight scream of sudden shocking pain in my finger. Nothing back ever happened, I still had all 10 fingers & all 10 finger tips on my hand, but the force of the window was so strong yet so gentle that it squished & flattened my middle finger's nail. It has stayed flattened like that ever since that day. So now, I got a square-ish right-middle finger & I really don't mind since it's so small of a different between my left hand, nobody really can notice or tell. Only if I saw it or you take a good & long looking at them. 🙌👐

I was once at a bmw dealership bc my mom was buying a bmw duh, and me and my sister were playing around with this convertible Z4 (sporty bmw), and when I pressed the button for the convertibles roof to be put back, my sister put her finger between the little back glass and the roof. As the roof was being put down it pinched her but luckily before the whole process was done she screamed at me to open it back up. Everything was ok, her finger didn’t have any damage luckily, so yeah safe cars 👍

having been a mechanic for 4 years working on cars from 30 years old to brand new, you'd be amazed how many basic safety features some brand new cars don't have so the manufacturer can save a buck. Mercedes had soft close windows in the 1960's... only American car I've seen with soft close windows to this day are Cadillacs

once i was in a car with my dad and his friend (his friend was driving btw) so i was sticking my hand out the window and the guy closed the window and my hand got stuck. i didnt wanna say anything because i was scared so i whispered to my dad to tell his friend to open the window. he obviously opened it and asked if i was okay but it hurt pretty bad. It was like my wrist that got stuck also i was like 6 or 7 at the time. this reminded me of that.

I had my finger caught in a window before but it was on my nails and it hurt bad it got bruised. But I'm fine the pain went away quickly.

When i was a toddler that just developed consciousness on the way back from something doctor related I actually got my finger stuck in the car window, when my parents heard me screaming and saw their babies finger being crushed by a car window they reopened it, didn’t get cut off though.

Well, I do think so last time my finger got snuck inside that window hole and it start bleeding but it's gone now.

0:22 happened to me when I was a kid because I tried holding the window down because we were driving by somebody using a weed-eater (I was only 3, give me a break), and no my finger didn't get cut off, it just squished it really bad, and I was unable to bend that finger for about a week.

I think that even a kid has enough strength the push down against the window and prevent the squish, these questions are so intriguing though, like can you bite off your own finger, I did a thing did that but I still don't know what's the right answer, every time I see a finger analogue I just think there's no way that's as strong as my finger, I mean soft tissue is called soft tissue but just picture grabbing a 100 lbs on a small surface area rope, that's more force than the car window and a similar surface area. I think the only option is go amputate somebody's hand and then do the experiments, I mean it is for science. Edit: And try biting through one of the fingers while you're at it
