Will a catback exhaust make your car faster? Does a performance exhaust increase your engine's horsepower? Will a new exhaust make your car louder? Is a performance exhaust worth the money? In this video we'll be installing a new catback exhaust on my Honda S2000, and measuring all of the differences. Which one is lighter? Which one makes more horsepower? Which one results in a faster car with real world testing? How do you install an exhaust? All these questions answered in detail!

Hope everyone's having a great day! A huge thanks to AutoTempest for making this video possible - if you enjoyed it consider sending some love to their website: www.autotempest.com/ as well as their Instagram, where you'll find photos of a beautiful AP2 S2000: instagram.com/autotempest/. And what did you think of this video style? I know it's longer than usual, and contains a much wider variety of information. Should this have been broken up into more specific videos, or do you like the format? Always appreciate your feedback!

On most cars, a catback exhaust will typically only change the sound and HP change will be modest at best. Glad you showed that whopping 2.5HP gain. The only car I ever noticed a difference on an exhaust mod was an '83 Mustang GT. It had restrictive iron manifolds with very restrictive emission gestapo butterfly valves that then went into a single tailpipe. I put in full length headers and dual pipes and wow - like a different car. The seat of the pants difference was huge. Nowadays, exhaust efficiency is pretty much maxed from the factory.

@4G12
@4G12 6 лет назад
iLupi Exactly. It would be foolishly short sighted to only chase hp gains with no regard for weight. The combination of small hp gain and significant weight loss yielded really good results overall, while still keeping the car very comfortable to drive on the street (i.e. no headache inducing droning on long highway drives). This is physically an excellent upgrade in every objective way and the only downside is monetary cost. When titanium production and fabrication advance and become more cost efficient, steel exhaust systems would be rendered obsolete.

Power is good for acceleration, but weight reduction improves acceleration, braking, and cornering! 👍 Also, the S2000's engine is close to it's maximum output in stock tune, and the factory exhaust is as well. Amuse knows this and took the factory exhaust and made a meaningful improvement to its design. Japanese mindset.
@RB-xv4si
@RB-xv4si 5 лет назад
smokenrowboy probably not any benefit to cornering because the weight removed was very low to the ground. If it was a non-convertible and he installed a carbon fiber roof, or if he installed a lightweight glass windshield, that would help with cornering.

I think this sort of says how efficient honda's stock design already was. i'm guessing regular economy cars may have more restrictive exhausts so it might be worth aftermarket exhausts, but honda knew exactly how much power it wanted to make, so they made the entire car as efficient as possible within the parameters they were given (material type, legal restriction, etc)
@romansoroka6662
@romansoroka6662 6 лет назад
Tetsuto Kamata. Exactly. Most air filter housings and exhaust ( not exh manifolds) systems are probably 90% as good as they could be. Replacing them adds only a tiny bit of efficiency to the flow, especially at part throttle or 2/3 up the rev range. Full throttle is different, but how many times are you at full throttle above 5,000 RPM in any car. Some drivers, never, an enthusiast like me, maybe .1% of the time I'm driving.

Actually titanium is more responsive to the exhaust gas pulses, it works like a bell if you will. So it brings out more frequencies producing a rich, crisp and throaty sound! Performance-wise the pulse responsiveness helps the exhaust gasses to maintain optimal laminar flow and that teams up ideally with the straight through resonators!

I wish there would have been a way to test exhaust flow. Splitting the pipe for dual exhaust like the stock setup on a 4 cylinder decreases the flow. I can imagine the single pipe flows out hot gasses much more efficiently. Your gains being in the upper RPM make total sense considering better flow, less restriction and dealing with the most exhaust gasses at those rpm. What I want to know is how this same change would effect a turbo charged car. I'm guessing you may see gains as soon as the car has full boost and up, not just higher rpm.
@victortatu
@victortatu 6 лет назад
I personally think its worth. Think about it ... 35lb less without sacrificing anything and getting a little bit of power and better sound for your troubles... . And, you actually improve braking and cornering too. How much would it cost to lose 35lb by either replacing a few body panels with carbon or quality lightweight wheels, bucket seats and so on... . It is for sure expensive, but imho worth it!
@madmaxblaster
@madmaxblaster 6 лет назад
Victor Dominguez this is a beautiful piece but there are other titanium exhausts for the s2k that's about the same weight and costs a lot cheaper. I had my s2k with a Trust (now GReddy) TI exhaust, and it was 9 lbs due to the muffler being cylindrical instead of the shape of the Amuse ti exhaust. That exhaust costs $1k compared to $2500 but was better, imo, than the Amuse. Amuse is a great tuner from Japan, no doubt, and whole replacing panels with cf is great and saves a lot of weight, it's not something I'd consider as well, unless the car becomes a show piece or if I have money to burn just like that. But anyways, I'm not trying to go against you and I agree with you at some point that this does not sacrifice anything about the car, but there are other cheaper options out there for the s2k for far less money, too.
@victortatu
@victortatu 6 лет назад
Yep, i agree, but my point was not especifically about an Amuse exhaut for a s2k. That kind of wheight savings, without sacrificing anything, for that kind of money is worth it, imho, for any car, within reason of course. Now, if there are other less expansive options with similar results for this car, they are problably worth it too.

Not so sure without seeing some comparisons with that specific engine. As I learned with my current car, some cars rely a bit too much on exhaust pressure to keep the engine able to drop power down at the snap of a finger. A car I owned in the past however nearly doubled in power by removing the cat entirely and using much larger pipe (it was bottle necked by exhaust pressure until I tried 3" pipe).

Thank you for the extremely detailed test and all your great videos! So few people actually account for temp/humidity/pressure and breakdown exactly where the changes are happening. Idea for a future video: Strip as much weight out as you can (spare tire, everything in truck, possibly the passenger seat, etc) and use the Vbox to show how much faster. Or kinda do the reverse and add a bunch of weight and remove it in measured amounts between tests, and change the weight location (trunk vs passenger seat) to see if it makes a difference (maybe weight over the rear tires would help traction for launching)

I put a larger diameter, straight through muffler, high flow cat full exhaust on my pickup and it made a difference because the factory setup was super restrictive for quietness. Same for the SUV. Mostly noticed an MPG gain though since it breathes better and doesn't work as hard on cruise. I'm not a stoplight racer.

Regarding the close-fitting exhaust hangers...in 2005 (I believe), Honda made a revision in the rubber exhaust hangers. The change was to a 3 holed more triangular shape rather than the two holes. The distance between two of the holes is greater than the other, and keeps the exhaust slightly further away. This is especially important in the AP2 rear bumper cover, as aftermarket exhaust can come very close to and sometimes melt the bumper cover.

Using a web based calculator (and assuming your actual altitude is 4000ft), the Density Altitude of your stock test was 5130ft. For the catback test, it was 4074ft. Density altitude is a good way to compare results for tests in somewhat disparate conditions. Using the difference between those (1056ft), the power difference "should" be about 2.5%. Add that to the 1.2% lighter and 1.4% more powerful. Total of 5.1% gain in acceleration. Checks out :)
@EngineeringExplained
@EngineeringExplained 6 лет назад
Very cool - actual altitude of the test is about 2700ish feet, probably no higher than 3,000. Does that calculator account for humidity?
@mwsletten
@mwsletten 6 лет назад
Colder air holds less water than warmer air, so that explains the difference in humidity reading. The performance increase due to lower temp far outweighs the decrease due to higher humidity.

A while ago, the mighty car Mods guys did some exhaust testing, and they put a spherical partial obstruction in the exhaust (it was a potato) and the car made a bit more power, could you explain what is going on here please? Maybe make a video about it
@FirstnameLastname-ni9uh
@FirstnameLastname-ni9uh 6 лет назад

@benson4u215
@benson4u215 6 лет назад
That ones almost easy, the potato made the engine scavenge raising backpressure inducing a "reverse torque increase" making the intake drivetrain less of a loss on scale compared to the exhaust. Motor trend has a vid on bashing your headers in to used gaurd rails basically and the tq an hp just kept raising
@Hustler_state
@Hustler_state 6 лет назад
benson420710 engine master's on motortrend yea, they measured hp and tq levels on a motor with varying sizes of dents on the headers, they really ended up smashing them really bad before it affected performance at all, you almost have to have a dent that pinches it shut before it starts to really hurt flow. For a n/a car you want to retain some backpressure, but I am curious to see numbers on the larger tubing.. I like that your into saving weight, but a straight single exit for me I couldn't do on that car, or my car for that matter. Those cars can sound pretty nice, odd to me you chose such a "standard" design
@benson4u215
@benson4u215 6 лет назад
jcoopdo I think having one exhaust exit helps with the backpressure while providing a lew end boost vs the mid and high end outputs you'd gain from having dual exhaust pipes, I do wonder if sohc/dohc/ohv motors prefer different pipes. On my '86 chevy astro with a .060" over I cut the exhuast right off before the cat so my headers and y-pipe go straight into a magnaflow super 40series piped until two feet infront of the rear right axle. Just going up .5" it raised the low end tq while sacrificing mid range until I added the tubing after the 40 series and without a speedo it truly becomes a butt dyno

I did quite a bit of modding to an '01 B18C Integra i had a long time ago and i can say i spent a lot of money wringing very modest gains. A freer breathing exhaust will help so much with that new supercharger you added! Exhaust mods make a bigger difference with forced induction engines where as intake mods make a bigger difference with naturally aspirated engines.

Unless you are running carbs without a knock sensor. you don't have to go for a tune for a catback. That's nonssense. The engines ability to work within a range makes it able to adjust to these small changes without issue. That is pretty much why it is there. And why they are awesome.

The S2000 was not the best car with which to do this comparison; Honda did a very good job designing the stock exhaust, so performance gains with the aftermarket exhaust system were minimal. Performance gains would be much more dramatic on something like a base Honda Civic which has a much more restrictive stock exhaust system.
