This is me trying to do digital art. I’m 37 and I’ve been a traditional artist for 20+ years. My husband bought me a tablet and clip studio and a tabmate to try and help get me into digital art but I genuinely cannot do it. I’m so overwhelmed with everything and it makes me forget the basic fundamentals. I honestly am so lost. I keep trying though but I feel like maybe I’m just too used to doing what I’m doing. But on the other hand- traditional art supplies are CRAZY expensive and I have to keep buying them so my wallet motivates me as well.

If it helps (as someone who did traditional as a kid, did some digital as I grew older, and is now back into traditional), I would recommend starting small! Stick to a simple round brush and only adjust opacity and size, and don't sweat it too much about the other stuff. You don't need a bazillion layers or all that. As you get more comfortable with digital you'll build up tips and tricks and short cuts just as I'm sure you did with traditional media :)

Hi! Traditional and digital artist here (mostly traditional). I use a ton of traditional mediums: graphite pencils, pens, alcohol markers, charcoal, soft pastels, colored pencils, and watercolor pencils (in graphite and colored styles). I have to say that my favorite mediums do change frequently, but I think soft pastels and markers are my favorite. Alcohol markers look soooo clean because they soak into the grain of whatever paper you use quite well. They're also really fun to blend with! Soft pastels are pretty hard to use, but they create a beautiful and otherworldly effect once blended. I do recommend getting fixative for the finished product though, because the pastels are basically glorified sticks of chalk and they smear super easily.

As someone who does traditional art, with different materials and mediums, i would say I start with a fine tip pencil for a sketch and then roll a kneading eraser over it and use a pen over it. I either just do pen shading or if I plan to watercolor I just completely erase the pencil sketch and define the lines better with a waterproof pen, I use the micron pens. Then I watercolor or color with copic markers. The lines that aren’t connected actually look super cool!!! And I think it’s perfectly well styled, when done well.

Something you might like is filling up a watercolor brush pen (like the Niji waterbrushes) with watercolor ink. I got black ink and got 3 brush pens and filled one with a very light gray, another with medium, and then a black. It's a little messy, but it's really fun and a lot more convenient than having to use brushes and dip into canisters (and store them after).

Although I've mostly been doing digital recently, when I did do traditional I used alcohol markers which a pink colerase pencil underneath as the sketch. I'd usually lighten the sketch just enough so there'd be some colour still there so the markers could pick up some of the colour. I found having the pink colerase pencil under gave all the colours a nice warm hue and worked especially well with skintones. You can sorta use the colour of the colerase pencil like an underlayer to influence the overall hue of the markers you chose. I'd usually do the lineart last as most pens I'd use would bleed and ruin the work so I'd just play it safe by doing it last, but if ur certain the pen wont bleed id prob do it before the markers.

This is definitely gonna get buried but I do a mix of digital and traditional art. When I do traditional, it's just little drawings in my sketchbook. I sketch with a pencil, erase when I need to redraw stuff, and then go in with some microns to do the lineart. I like to use different color microns so I can have colored line art. And then I color the base colors with a mix of whatever cheap markers still have ink in them, add some shadows ontop, add some highlights with my gelly rolls and boom! Art has been made!

I have a LOT of trouble drawing without a sketch. But that led to a habit of erasing too much, seeking perfection. So the most I ever learned was when my Drawing III professor told me that I was only allowed to use ink for the rest of the semester. No erasing. It made me WAY more comfortable with moving more quickly and embracing mistakes, making my art way more fluid and natural.

@naTa-fp1yy Sure! I have used Master's Touch, Shuttle Art Art Maker, and Wellokb markers, in that order. The Master's Touch are nice because they tend to be bigger so they hold more ink; at least the ones that I bought did. The shuttle art markers that I bought off Amazon are nice because you get 100 pack and you get a ton of different colors, but they are very skinny and tend to run out quickly. The Wellokb markers are new to me and I'm just trying them out. They feel cheap, as in light weight, bit they seem to blend ok. Shuttle Art also makes a skin color set, which has about a 30 pack of a wide range of skin colors, dark to light. I hope this helps some.

I love the Pentel- Orenz 0.2 - Mechanical panicle. I love the way this pen makes my lines darker and sharper !! - They just look much more controlled than before.

I am so glad to see you trying to learn new things. It's so amazing to see people explore other mediums and to be so open to other ideas. I personally sketch using either a mechanical pencil or a micron pen and if I need color, I use watercolor. I paint using the Windsor and Newton field watercolor set. It's the perfect set to use while out and about and it's the set that you might recognize from some of Scott's videos.

I am a traditional artist, I normally like to start a sketch in a pencil and if I like the drawing a lot I use a pen. Or try to color it to the best of my abilities, but also I do a lot of random stuff to get my creative juice flowing. But don't forget you're amazing at what you do so you got this SamDoseArts!!

i love this. I always loved ink sketches. i adore teh sketchy aesthetic more than the finalized works, because its nice seeing the unclean or not perfect pieces. I choose my sketchbooks on this basis as well. I like seeing how things would have looked like or what changes happened. Love these Sam

Usually I use either ball point pens, graphite pencils or charcoal, depending on my mood. I’ve also drawn in ink too. I find the hatching and cross hatching is essential to creating the illusion of form within a drawing and with pencils, blending is key - no hard lines when using pencils in realistic drawings either, easier to blend that way. Hope all this helps :)! I loved the video and I thought your sketches were really good too, considering how long it’s been! 🥳🥳

I'm a traditional artist, but will be getting into digital when my tablet arives at the end of March, I'm so exited!! I ususally have a messy sketch which i refine and correct over again as i spot the problems, i then go over it with my lineart after tidying it up. After that, i colour it using my alcahol markers (ohuhu honalulu which are just as good as copic but at a MUCH more afordable price) and then add thicker lineart and details and the juicy HiGhLiGhTs✨✨✨ Also, broken up lins in traditional art is totally fine. Sometimes it's a stylized decision and can have the charming messy/sketchy vibe that i personally rather like.

I am a traditional artist who works with a lot of different mediums. some of my favorites though that you might like are definitely dip pens, markers and pastels (make sure you only draw on one page or else they will smear). It would be really interesting to see you do painting though. P.S. when i am planning a pen and ink drawing i first draw some construction lines very lightly with a drying out ball point pen to make sure the proportions are right

For traditional art, I've recently bought a set of fineliners that all have varying thicknesses and found it fun trying to incorporate multiple pens into one sketch. It really makes you think what size makes each element pop, and can add so much more weight and variety to a work :)

what I've found easiest for me in traditional art is starting out with a brush tip marker and marking out my shapes. I do it really loosely and don't really bother to make it too perfect. and then I go back in with a pen and start outlining the actual figure I've drawn. Having the marker in the background gives me an easier starting point to go off of, especially when drawing people, and it also distracts the eye from any mistakes in my linework! Lol

I love sketching with my 2B pencil on used scraps of paper (printer paper, promo stuff, etc.) It gives a healing break from having to stare at a glowing screen. Also, it's just me and my thoughts, no pop ups and no fancy tools to distract me from my ideas. Newly born ideas are very vulnerable to distraction.

I mainly use pencils over pens, but I've been drawing traditionally for years, and this is how my process has turned out: 1. Drawing thin light lines to lay out the full drawing. Primarily, I use a 4H graphite pencil here. 2. "Cleaning up" by using a rubber (I have both big and small ones for precision) and fixing uneven lines. 3. Grabbing my graphite pencil set and using pencils of different thicknesses on the lines. This is to highlight the parts that I want to shine more by using 5B, 4B, 3B, and sometimes 2B, and then I just gradually move towards the thinner ones. 4. Shading where I mostly use the HB pencil. 5. Once again, highlight lines that need it and finish with another "clean up" if needed. Bonus: adding the date and a little description of what I've drawn, so I don't forget in the future.

As a traditional artist who draws mainly figure, I've really enjoyed working with conte crayons and conte pencils!! They give your work a really classic feel and are super fun to work with. They're almost like charcoal, but easier to control somehow. And I love using them on toned paper so that I can create highlights by adding white pigment to the paper. Definitely worth a try!

Colored pencils (Prismacolor is a nice budget friendly starting point), regular pens, watercolor (Winsor & Newton Cotman is a good starting point…good balance between pro grade and student grade) and gouache (Winsor and Newton makes gouache too!)

Traditional Art Baby experience: 1) when I draw in sketchbook I use a light colored pencil (such as red or pink) to put down the shapes and indicate where everything goes. 2)Then I take a brown or dark red pen and do the line art. 3) Afterwards I take the red pencil again and add blush or anything that need to be pink. I like pink ok. And theeeen... 4) I use a single copic marker (usually a light blue or purple or maybe a light brown) to color the shaded areas. This is like the multiply layer. 5)Lastly, if i don't forget to bring it, I take a white pen and add little highlights :) And always add the date of when the drawing was done so you go back and remind yourself of the abomination you have created and make sure you don't make the same mistakes. Or just do them again, idk, up to you. I somehow repeat all my mistakes and just call it a day :) Hope you have a good day:)

u reminded me to practice with a pen, and I ended up drawing for a lil over an hour just drawing faces. It took a bit to get used to having to use a pen but ended up enjoying it and not wanting to stop, I'm rlly happy with some of the faces I drew, definitely gotta do this more. I tried to copy ur style a lil bit and it didn't turn out exactly how I wanted but it looked different and better than my other drawings.

when I draw in a sketch book I use different supplies all the time. however, I typically start with a light pencil and draw a light and rough sketch. from there I have used markers and then used fine liners for the line art. I have used watercolor as a base and gone over with pencil, and sometimes I just use shading with a darker pencil. I've been sketching for years now and I actually only started doing digital art after watching you. Thanks for helping me on my art Journey!
