20-30 miles are my packs. Since I’m mostly rural a GHB and a BOB are basically the same. They cover an unexpected night outside. For more urban areas never underestimate cash as a prep. There are some places I have to go that cash and warm clothes will get me off the X more than outdoor gear.

Completely agree. As a former Marine I am firmly in camp worst scenario. Bug out bag and get home bag are one in the same. Work takes me to the other side of the state in some cases.

I live rural Appalachia. Long stretches of rural mountains. I don't do the 10 different bags for 10 different things. One pack that handles all the scenarios, and that's it. Any situation where I have to be away from home either a few days or several weeks (or indefinitely) my one pack is set up for and thats that. 4 season ready to go even in the middle of summer (higher elevations can get freak winter weather at times). I do my best to keep everything as minimalist as possible to keep down the weight. I do hump the pack regularly to keep in shape with it.

maybe if you live in the mountains depends how far you are willing to go to get home 1-20 miles??? A day, or two then you have to worry about getting back to work. If the grid is down you better know how to fish, hunt, clean, prepare, cook, and jar or store whatever your thinking about eating for awhile. Same with Water, are you close to water or a good water source, can you filter water with what you have or make shift a water filter to purify as much water as possible. Do you have something to sleep in a tent or make shift tent/hut. Tarps are good if the weather is good. A sleeping bag, enough clothes to make sure your warm enough for your journey, the most important part is comforting close and shoes or Boots if your traveling through forest or walking through your neighbors land. Another thing is protection to get through those environment know your animals or creatures that are around your home and neighbors land. Plan ahead is the best part of getting home, make sure you have a map of where you are or where you need to go. Have something to write down or mark where you have been so your not walking in circles, especially in the country, know your landmarks and where your going.

Awesome video as always. It all depends on your situation and terrain. For me, I know that I’m approximately 25 miles from home most often. I know how long it will take me to get back home on foot in best and worst case conditions. My GHB is optimized for speed with a potential sleep over night. I want to get home as fast and as inconspicuously as possible. My BOB is set up for twice the distance to get me to a safe location should I actually have to leave my home because the security and or safety, has been compromised. There’s no right or wrong answer here. Know your terrain and plan accordingly for each potential mission.

Great video. Someone needed to say it. Glad to see from the comments im not the only person thinking this way. Although watching hundreds of videos on RU-vid over the last 15 years from various people about their bug out bags and get home bags and whatnot definitly had me wondering.

My bag is both because I travel 170+ miles away from home for work on a regular basis.

Short answer yes. Depending on your situation, capability and goals. Great video!

I have definitely gone through many evolutions of the bug out/get home bags. They’re getting smaller and much more inconspicuous specially when you make use of caches.

I have nowhere to bug out to presently, so I have one bag that could do both if need be.

Because of my situation, assuming motor vehicles won't be working, then I have a large garden cart as a carry-all for BOB or INCH!

For us, it's the same bag, season dependent. I think you have the best backdrop on YT! Wow!

Agreed. The difference is mentality and use, not the physical contents of the bag itself. The basics of human survival are essentially universal. In my personal opinion if, as a civilian, I need to use a BOB then it is probably way to late to bug out with any reasonable expectation of success. That debate could go on forever, though. Getting home is a much more likely scenario for most people. Again, IMHO.

120 miles? That would be a 6 day walk for me. I could make more than 20 miles the first day, but after a couple of days my pace would slow, so maybe 8 or nine days. That's a lot of supplies.

For over a year now I'm planing on making a video about the whole Gear and Backpack thing. I had to learn it the very hard way from the refugee crisis and horrible makeshift city called Moria, the Flooding in Germany Ahr Valley to my job in Ukraine, where I saw a whole nation falling appart in front of my eyes. Maybe we can have a chat about that one day. In general I agree with your work and recommendations.

If people were honest with themselves every get home bag would be a BOB and every BOB would have elements of INCH. Seriously, this is the last bag you may ever grab.

I am lucky, I am usually within 5 miles from my home so I don't need a ton of stuff. I just need the basics along with water since I live in the southwest. Agree that both philosophies can utilize being the same bag in most situations.

Great question. For me, one and the same. Anymore, I carry so much less gear. You are right on, environment, distance, medical issues, skill set, will dictate gear. Also if you have family members, it can change the whole approach. It really isn't that complicated, but finding the best gear for you may take some time. Your approach and gear selection is impressive, not to mention your military background. Thanks for sharing.

Agree they can be the same but in my case the farthest I go normally is 25 miles so small bag if I travel then we're talking a serious bag like yours

Excellent. A refreshing common sense approach to this ridiculous bag topic. The contents depend on WHAT you’re doing or plan on doing. Thanks 👍🇺🇸

I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about this. My get home bag is my day hike emergency overnight bag. I have a bug out bag but if I need to use that I’m screwed anyway 🤣
