Is it a good idea to use automotive paint on a metal roof if you have access and the tools to apply this type of paint?

Hi! We have a brand new metal roof and we love it. A few of the neighbors don't love the glare that they get at certain times of the day. We want to be good neighbors. Can we maybe spray a clear matte spray paint on the sections that glare? Would this work? What can we do? I don't want to invalidate the warranty. Thanks.

Hello! Unfortunately, anything that you adhere to the paint or coat the roof with will void the paint warranty. I'm not familiar with anything that will reduce glare after the fact. After a season or two of weathering, metal roofs often get less shiny and will lose some of that initial extreme sheen, but I'm not sure if that will be enough to satisfy the neighbors. Sorry I don't have more to offer you there! Your contractor might have some thoughts if you reach out to them. -Thad

What about elastomeric acrylic paint on an old metal roof? Is it a good option?

personally i would have rented a 5 bag sandblast pot and a few bags of black beauty and brush blasted the whole roof then blew it off with the blast hose to clean it. then rolled a good coat of iron oxide primer on it followed 2 days later by rolling a coat of white hi-gloss industrial enamel on it. you would have to come back 8 years later and wash it off with a powerwasher and soap , let it dry ,then roll one more coat of white industrial enamel on it to make sure you would get another 15 years out of it. the white reflects the suns heat and makes it much cooler under there in summers, and the hi gloss enamel makes snow and rain&dirt run off fast as it does off a cars finish. if you wanted to get 30 years out of it you could rent a sprayer and spray the underside with iron oxide when you primed the top.. no need to put finish coat under there.

Hello from Knoxville TN. My landlord is trying to get me to paint my neighbors rusty metal roof. He claims that I should be able to complete the job in four hours. He wants me to stand on a ladder and use an extension pole for the paint roller as well. As for payment, he said $100 would be his offer. I have never painted a roof so I'm trying to do some research. So I was wondering, how much would it typically cost to hand roll a highly pitched appropriately 700 sq ft roof that has quite a bit of rust damage?

My guess is he’s joking that price is literally laughable

@@charlesmccoy2680 That's the thing. H is for sure NOT joking. I just want to educate myself because he's trying to take advantage of me not knowing anything about it. I did look the house up on Zillow and found out that it's 1000 square feet. I'm hoping if I can come back with a counter offer and some more information I can avoid getting myself scheduled. I've also watched a few videos and everyone says you have to clean and treat the rust first. He claims I can just pressure wash it and just paint over the rust. I'm just asking for some knowledge and pointers.

(because i'm a nice guy)

@@justaguy-69 Thanks so much for the advice. I think at this point my landlord is going to have to find some other sucker to do it for $100. Clearly the amount of work is far beyond my capabilities. I'm 5'5" and 120lb. And I'm certain he has no safety equipment. So I'd rather stay alive securely on the ground than try and do all of that by myself with only a ladder. But now I know what it would take physically, what the materials would cost, as well as labor. I truly appreciate your input.
