Creator if the recent Star Wars show: The Acolyte, Leslye Headland, has expressed interest in making a live-action KoTOR adaptation. She says that she's a big fan of Kreia. Imagine that. Regardless, is it even possible to adapt KoTOR into a TV Show and still retain everything from the games?

I think a better route would be a Mandalorain Wars show. It gives the creatives more freedom to tell the story without dealing with the headache of adapting the games. We can still have a Kreia cameo in there somewhere. The problem with direct adaptations of the games is that streaming in general is hostile to storytelling that isn't in the form of 8 hour movies. So you either get shows that will be unfished before getting cancelled or shows that will rush their story and ignore certain characters to fit the runtime. Any Adaptation of the games needs to be told in a long, episodic format to succeed.

i agree... and i want to add this: the main charm of the KOTOR series is the big twist ending. giving Revan any set identity (and the same going for the Exile) would ruin the story and why so many people love it. i'd rather disney keeps their distance from kotor's exact storyline and instead focuses on companions & people in the galaxy dealing with the affects of revan and the exile's actions, or the mandalorian wars. companions are already set people and wouldn't be too much trouble to adapt, but i think inevitably whoever is cast as revan & the exile would cause some discomfort for anyone watching, whether they stick to canon Meetra & Revan or if they change their identities... i think the charm of Darth Revan & The Exile are that they're your own personal mark on the galaxy; and they appeal really well to this grand fantasy of being the most powerful person in the galaxy... idk... to take that from the player just sucks really

Do the decision making officers that hold ownership of the IP understand Kotor? Does the institution that hold ownership of the IP have a structure that aides understanding? In the simplest terms the answers can be; yes, yes. yes, no. no, yes. no, no. What would each of these answers do to any effort to create a Kotor project? Caution seems wise. There are few who have proven as worthy as you to bear the torch for Kotor. Caution seems wise when someone else holding the torch might not understand. Bloom's revised taxonomy comes to mind. . . Make it traditionally animated, Make it an anthology about different characters and folks before, during, and after the KotOR duology of games. Think the ultimate fates of KotOR I and II companions like Juhani and Atton respectively, alongside some bad**s and unfortunate bystanders in the likes of Taris and Katarr. Have it, possibly in separate seasons, be set in different worldlines dependent on whether or not the Revan/Exile of said worldlines was fully Light Sided, Dark Sided, or the all-too-uncommon in-between. Make it fit in-universe as a series of skewered ancient records from the Galactic Triumvirate of the Legacy era of Legends is trying to fix things up upon, and... *Make ambiguously subtle connections with a Multiverse and perceived undercover operatives. If said anthology ends up really great, then almost no one will mind certain characters* (say, a Kyle Katarn-esque Jedi commando with an overpowered penchant for Force Speed and unnatural foresight, a TIE Defender/X-83 Twintail fighter pilot ace who's equal to Keyan Farlander and Maarek Stele, and a motherkriffing down-to-galaxy Celestial gaslighting as a supreme commander to the organization of the aforementioned two) *suddenly appearing in, say, a Gravity Falls/Amphibia/The Owl House crossover sequel saga, because their successes in the Legends-verse prompts their actual superiors to other worlds that need their tried and tested assistance as guardians of stability and dutiful soldiers fighting against increasing entropy.* (If not successful, well, let's just say the operatives are deemed as failures and are officially retired, and thus replaced by far more successful and memorable newblood.) Addendum: Make sure Drew Karpyshyn isn't involved, true.
@billdestroyerofworlds
@billdestroyerofworlds Месяц назад
I'll speak for the second one. There are so many iconic lines and creative writing decisions that to excise them would feel like a lesser product. I think a good writer who could meticulously figure out where to put all of the companion dialogue but it would need them to hire good talent and probably allow some time for the script to bake. Disney's production pipeline doesn't seem to allow for both.

One of my biggest issues with this concept (and one that I have with swtor) is that it would canonize an exact canon “play through” of both games. While it doesn’t rip the role playing aspect out of the game itself, I personally feel like it may remove the appeal for a lot of people, especially if their vision of Revan and the Exile differ from what is portrayed. The stories work best as games and I believe that they should stay that way. Even setting that aside, so much would be lost in an adaptation to the point where it wouldn’t feel like Kotor anymore.
@ForsakenKrios
@ForsakenKrios Месяц назад
Your vision of the characters amounts to little more than "am I good/normal or a psychopathic Sith killer". I've never understood this element when you look at the games removed from one or two playthroughs, they are incredibly linear and binary in their choices and outcomes.
@Crash4Smash
@Crash4Smash Месяц назад
@@ForsakenKrios I agree that most choices in the games are linear, but I would say that the players vision of the characters encompass more than them alone. Things such as names, appearances, or even gameplay related elements like character/jedi class, fighting style, and feats, while being minor on their own all influence how the player sees the characters. Since each fan has their personal preferences about this, I personally feel like trying to create a definitive version of the characters, no matter how you do it, is going to leave a lot of people disappointed. Ultimately though, I could be overestimating how important this is to the majority of players.

Now replace the words "you" with "people" as I am talking from a general perspective. I find that these days I have to spoon-feed every little detail into what I mean to the comments these days just so people can read proper English. Now that's out the way. It's been established in the high republic that hyperspace travel into the outer rim was made during the high republic era. Some of the planets that we visit in KOTOR are either in the outer rim or are on the border to the rim. So far, the man has been giving what is Star Wars fans want in the community, and the most trustworthy on what to do with the brand. Plus, he was working with George to bring Revan in the clone wars series, but couldn’t since it couldn’t work because the Son was already a god like being, and having two Sith Lords of Bane and Revan influencing him, didn’t make sense in the narrative of things. Your points about the length of the story got me thinking that a book would be the best non-interactive adaption of at least Kotor 1. Novels pack more story than movies do, so one can more easily fit all the important storylines and characters. Having a lot of dialog isn't as jarring as the entire thing is in next anyways. Detailed descriptions of the environments can also immerse the reader to the same degree as traveling through the said environment would for a player. Also there's the fact that Kotor book adaptions already exist in the form of fanfiction. I think Star Wars prose in general is underappreciated. The Force paticularly is something that is as much or even more in the mental realm than the physical one. Detection of other Force Users, Force Nexuses and far-away usages of Force Powers, telepathy, Force bonds and falling to the Dark Side are all things that happen more on the mental level, and as such are easier to depict and more immersive in prose form than in a visual form. Prose also allows depiction of more fantastical Force Powers and environments that would need a lot of CGI in a live-action format. Also Sith tombs and other places that introduce Force Visions are more unpredictable since the reader has no way of knowing what part is hallucination and what part real. This makes me ask; have you ever read Star Wars prose? Because there are a lot of stories that haven't been told in other mediums (although many novels have comic book adaptions).

I actually think KoToR 2 is closer to being adaptable to a 10 episode series than the original game, and I think it could be made to stand on its own without a KoToR 1 TV show. The idea of a lost war veteran discovering a "found family" of people damaged by the conflict she chose to participate in years ago is a really strong overarching framework for story purposes and is full of characters who can be written in interesting and complex ways. I agree that Kreia would be a challenge-I'm not sure I'd ever accept that any voice other than Sara Kestelman as truly being Kreia.

I feel like fans don’t really understand that an adaptation doesn’t need to copy the original plot beat for beat. Yeah it would be nice to get the most amount of characterization from side characters and world building but that’s not how most adaptations work. Tv and film need to play to their strengths. What a kotor adaptation should aim to do first and foremost is get people invested in a new era of sw, be entertaining while keeping the exo-skeleton of the narrative of the game, and open the doors wide for new stories or expansions in that era. sw desperately needs more refreshing stories outside the current era. The acolyte is a good step forward and this could be great.

Fundamentally i don't see why kotor couldn't be done. It's a pretty straightforward story and the core themes are fairly well trodden ground narratively. Kotor 2 is a bit more interesting and obviously plays around more with the conceptual understanding of the force. There's a tendency in the fandom to be overawed by kreia, again she's a fairly broad archtype so personally i think the challenge would lie in how it would narratively approach the ripples in the force. This is something the video games gets away with and handwaves with dialogue about our mary sue exile but a film adaptation would probably need something tangible.

You're thinking too small. One season alone could be 10 episodes. Episode 1: Endar Spire. Episodes 2, 3, 4, 5 - Taris. Episode 6 7 and 8 - Dantooine/Jedi training. Episode 9 and 10 - Tatooine. Or, hear me out, Sleheyron replacing Tatooine. Just make up new stuff and plop HK-47 there to be picked up. Sleheyron was supposed to be in the game but never saw the light of day. Tatooine has become oversaturated by the newer shows, and they even did the Krayt dragon hunt in The Mandalorian. Now I would love the HK-47 negotiation peace with the Tuskens and Tuskens telling us lore about how Tatooine was a garden until the Rakata bombed it...but people would complain its too much like the other shows that have had way too much Tatooine. Regardless, I think a KOTOR TV show could work but it would never please everyone, and it would definitely leave stuff on the chopping block. Mission meeting her brother would fall by the wayside for me, but I would still have her be prominent in at least season one. People also seem to think there can't be "side quests" - just offshore some of those to the side characters to keep them involved. Case and point, have Mission, Zaalbar, and T3-M4 be the ones the deal with Sasha (the stowaway) in a character arc for them. This is all just me spitballing ideas but the notion that a show couldn't work I think is misguided. KOTOR 2 would be harder to adapt and it would definitely be a show where people mostly talk and wax poetic. Now I'd be down for that, but I don't think most of the fanbase would be unless the first couple seasons knocked the first game out of the park and had them hooked.

Better question: can Disney write a good Star Wars TV show?

KOTOR and by extension SWTOR need to be promoted/bought by Disney.

Yes, but the toxic people will still cry about it because of Bastila Shan, Meetra Surki and Keira being the leads.

i dont want a kotor adaptation and I definitely dont want it in this era of loud manchildren complaining about wokeness in star wars. I WOULD be down for KOTOR 3 whether sequentially or spiritually within the new canon as a show. I just really wanna see some of the lessons from KOTOR 2 be actualised for once, it is a blight upon this franchise that it produced the most thorough deconstruction of itself 20 years ago and learnt nothing from it.

Someone creative would be able to do it in a movie and or a series. Just because you can't think of a way that it would work doesn't mean that it is a bad idea. Get over yourself. Seriously. 😂
