Can a single 12" handle a cranked 100W Marshall JCM800? We hit 125dB in the studio!

Alex and Lewie pit the EVM12S-300 against the Neo 250 Copperback and the G12H-150 Redback once again, but this time with the help of a cranked Marshall JCM800.
Our new-ish standard of using the JM47 (large diaphragm condenser) microphone to capture the room was compromised by the sheer volume, so after the first play-through (from 1:30) all audio is being captured by the Rode VideoMic Pro+

My EVM Reformer cab - seen in this video - arrived in Malaysia early and it is truly a beautiful warm velvet sound! As good or better than I was hoping. Thanks Alex for the 2 cabs I got now - Im sure therell be another challenging project build I think up in future for Barefaced to make. These creations are really great - even with the 8.9kg EVM it still is a really light powerful and sweet sounding cab.

There's something about the immediacy, clarity and punch of the Neo that really just hits my ears in the right place, I keep favoring that one every time you feature it. I need to order up a new cab from you with that one in it.

USPS said that you all received the substitute 200 Watt EVM10M on February 5th. Lemmiwinks, the Rivera EVM10 that made two trips across the Atlantic, is rated at 300 Watts RMS. The world wants to hear that one.

By thw way, thank you Alex, for pointing out that the Activier can be both active and passive. I was wondering about that. However, I now really want to hear an Activier cab compared with a regular passive AVD cab and a tube power amp, as that was what I have been planning for my next rig. If the Activier sounds just as good as a Mesa/Boogie Stereo 2:Fifty into a passive AVD cab, I'd be happy to just go with the Activier and simplify my rig design. I have been planning for a Stereo 2:Fifty into an Upsizing with two Celestion AlNiCo Creams. I like what stacking two drivers vertically in stereo does to the soundstage.

The Copperback is still my favorite of the three, but with the amps cranked, I see the point of the EVM12S much better. Its midrange emphasis would make it an excellent driver for a lead guitarist, whereas for me as a primarily rhythm player, the wider frequency response with a bit of a mid scoop would pad out my sound while leaving ample space for the lead. In fact, I would love to hear the Copperback and the EVM together, perhaps in an Uprising or Upsizing, and in the context of a band with two guitarists, you could mic them both and mix them differently, or simply mic them alternately, with perhaps the Copperback being miked for the rhythm guitarist and the EVM for the lead guitarist, but having the benefits of both for the stage sound.

We've been talking quite a bit recently on TalkBass about bicycle-portable rigs, and I've noted that the Barefaces One10T would easily fit the standard US 24 quart milk crate bolted to the rear rack of my bicycle. I've been car-free for nearly three years now, and I'm thinking very strongly about a One10T and a small Class D power amp like the Mesa Subway D-350 to replace my current Mesa Walkabout Scout 12 combo for smaller, local gigs on bass.

My two ev12l classics came in.. a 180 78 super twin reverb 😂 that I got from guitar center and (thankfully?) ups I guess dropped it and broke the cabinet (it weighs 100 lbs) so I had them check out a damage claim and well.. my $512 amp became a $180 amp! Shipped! I love that thing :) it has a master volume that works lol sounds great and.. something magical about knowing you could blow a hole in the wall if you wanted 😂☺️ I don’t imagine it’ll prove to be too practical but a lot of fun for $180!

They say in 10 years Alex will still be flipping the speaker signs. lol. Redback sounds the best to me through my little iPad speakers.

I was using EVM12Ls in '82...lol...with a Mesa M180 into a Mitchel Sand Cab with a pair. I could point it at a Marshall stack and knock it over...LMAO! Kids...how cute. Glad some are trying to be original and learn. Cool vid :O) Oh, you do wanna be careful of them ears...trust me on that...!

My question: Activier with a guitar, straight in, noting in between. Also, any A / B with an Activier using an amp head preamp via splitting signal out of an fx loop (load box accordingly so as to not damage whichever power amp is bypassed.). Curious to see how the Activier holds up against a traditional tube power section. I'm loving the content, I own an Upsetter and an Uprising already, looking for (albeit very little convincing) reason for a thrid cab =) Cheers!

A wise man named Chris who serviced my old Marshall Super Bass told me that the EQ on this style of amp is attenuate only, so 10s (or 11s) across the board is "flat".

The Red Back sounds nicest for me. The others were a bit fuzzy don’t know if it’s like that in the room or just how they record.

I would also love to see one in Olas hands. Would be sick if you guys send him one of your oversized with V30 in it and he will make that thing CHUG. Very curious on his opinion on it because I also like to make thing chug.

As a tiny company vs the mainstream behemoths we’ve found that the modern world of RU-vid etc compared to the world ~15 years ago where magazines and forums dominated, is much more challenging to get noticed in. Magazines have generally reviewed interesting gear whether or not you pay to advertise with them whilst RU-vidrs expect to be paid for pretty much everything. So occasionally we get in touch with various notable RU-vidrs and say “we make awesome innovative gear, would you like to check it out” and we get very little response. If you want someone to check out our gear then y’all need to go hassle them so they realise there’s a demand for content about Barefaced gear and then maybe they’ll take up our offers.

That EVM12-S sounded very very strange. Are you guys sure that it has a original coil (alu wire) and paper cone. That sound is nowhere near to what speaker should sound like.

@@goranmarinic2923 it didn’t look like it had been reconed. What do you think it should sound like?
@goranmarinic2923
@goranmarinic2923 15 дней назад
@@BarefacedAudio It shouldn't be squashed in the highs, quite contrary, it should have plenty of highs. And it should have been much more open sounding in general. EVM12-S in many aspects is similar to EVM12L, it has slightly shallower basket and the cone. Tonally, it has slightly less bass than L's but more highs, which I was missing in this demo. The coil must have original aluminium squre wire, otherwise if it is recoiled with copper wire it will significantly change the character of the speaker. How much different paper cones attribute to the tone you surely know better than I do. There are some people, I know one here in Belgrade Serbia, who can repair speakers in a way that you can't tell if it is original one from the factory, or repaired. Some time ago, I missed to buy a pair of these 12-S, for about 180 Euros both. Pretty cheap, right? There were brand new paper cones, and the seller couldn't tell if the coils were original. I talked to my friend who is a touring musician, plays also EVMs, that is just a theoretical chance that the coil is original EV alu-wire, and he suggested to skip it, because, according to him, that speaker wasn't actually an EVM. Original EVM kit is almost 200 euros. Nobody in the world would repair the speaker with original EV components and ask 90 Euros for a single speaker. I play guitar ( grungy stuff) through my 2xEVM15L cab that I built. Also a member of the "EVM sect". 😎 p.s. my apologies if I made some mistakes in english
