In this video I test what happens when you put a spider's own web around it. Will it get stuck? Can a spider get out of its own web? Then I test if I put another spider in the spider's web can it still get out or are spiders immune to getting caught in a spider's web?

The spider with the long abdomen is Funnel web weavers (Family Agelenidae) not to be mistaken with the Australian Funnel Web. This species is native to North America. But the spider which resemble a jumping spider is really tough to find because there is a few species which resembles it. One is native to Europe but it is the rare ladybird spider Eresus sandaliatus. Also it could also be some spesies which I don't know or sometimes if you leave a jumping spider (phidippus audax) for a long time it would start to jump around and make a web.
@sleepinertia7782
@sleepinertia7782 5 лет назад
I agree with you on the first spider he showed, but I'm almost certain the second one is the very common bold/daring jumping spider (Phidippus audax). It's hard to see on mobile, but the markings on the abdomen and legs are good indicators.

I find those large jumping spider like spiders here in Pennsylvania and I love finding them so much that I put 4 in my girlfriends yard to cut back the large flies and wasps and now there's 20 some in her yard. She got mantis pods and easy summer she has hundreds of them now 😁 it's awesome

Jumping spiders don’t really build sticky webs. So the second spider couldn’t really get stuck. But probably because of the sent of the jumping spiders web discouraged it from going forward potentially being “eaten”.

Well the main issues with this experiment are that not all webs spun by spiders are actually sticky. There are ancor lines with tend to have little to no sticky properties, drag lines which do, and other types that I can't think of atm. There was wads of glue (that can actually be seen with the appropriate magnification) that are spread accross certain webs that are used to capture unsuspecting prey items, the spiders are aware of this and typically navigate through while avoiding it, some species have very very small hairs with oils that help to avoid this issue. Furthermore, many if not all species are actually capable of eating their own and even other webs. Another thing to consider here, is that no two species are entirely the same. Some spiders don't even really spin webs, I.E. pretty much any spider from the huntsman (or wandering spider) family. (No, neither huntsman nor wandering spider actually refer to a single type of spider, its just what a lot of people refer to a specific type of spider from Brazil as for some reason, probably because its a type of huntsman/wandering spider and the scientific name is difficult to remember or pronounce for a lot of them). This isn't to say that wanderers/huntsman are incapable of spinning webs. All true spiders have spinerettes but not all actually utilize it for making homes, some strictly use it to capture prey while out and about. That being said, neither will actually get caught in the web. They'll maybe get stuck for a split second, but they can literally eat their way out or simply snip a few strands and freely walk, or rather crawl away.
@kaijuk
@kaijuk Год назад
The third type of web is the sheet web it exudes to wrap prey but I don't think this video is cool leave the spiders alone FFS🤦🏻‍♀️

So, for those wondering, why spiders don’t get caught in their web on contact is because the spiders‘ feet are oily which helps them walk on it, and can eat their silk or dissolve it with their saliva. They also don’t put glue on all of their web, webs are just smooth silk with glue droplets on it and they can maneuver around the droplets with their nimble legs. Spiders can actually get caught in webs rather easily, especially by other spiders. Many spiders eat other spiders and use their webs to do so, many of which do so by ambushing their trespasser/game and wrapping them like a straight jacket.

One thing about the web, by the time you got to the second spider, the web might have been a lot more bound up or clumped from having played around with it already. So, more difficult to get through (and get caught).

The second spider saw it as a barrier because it's a different species, but not because it's a different kind of webbing, but because it has a different psychology. Ground spiders are not that hard webbers, they are more of walking spiders, so they obviously see webbing as a barrier as rhey don't have to deal with it often. The reason it did build a web in the cup though was that it's space was limited, so it could not go hunt (that applies for the jumping spider as well by the way). Hope I could help you!

Spiders eat each other. Spider #2 likely could smell the first spider’s scent on that web and thought it was going to get eaten by Spider #1. Movement of struggling prey causes spiders to move towards their newest catch, so it is likely that Spider #2 knew enough to stay still whenever he happened to come across strands of the first spider’s webbing. They may be small, but they’re far from stupid. There’s a video posted by a man who found a spider tangled in strands of a small doormat in his kitchen and when he went to try to free the spider to let it go outdoors, the spider lifted each leg in turn so the man could gently untangle it. The spider figured out that the man was helping it and tried to make the process easier. Really amazing.

As far as I know jumping spiders don’t build webs, they use a single thread of silk to leap and catch themselves if they miss their target (sort of like a bungee), they hunt like a cat does, by pouncing, so they don’t need a web like net casting spiders or funnel/sheet/orb etc web builders. There may be a species of jumping spider that maybe defies that rule but everything I’ve ever read about jumping spiders suggests they’re not builders. Hunting spiders tend to have the bigger eyes, the web builders have smaller eyes, poorer sight and usually use vibration on their web to detect prey. I may have read too much about them and seen too many docs, lol.

For a future experiment, would it be possible to play around with the Double Slit experiment a bit please. Everyone whose seen the double slit experiment knows that the observer is thought to cause the wave function to change at the point of observation. My questions are, 1, is there a magnetic field generated by the digital camera when it takes the image? If so then that can defiantly affect a photons magnetic field (as all light is on the electromagnetic spectrum) and means light is a wave unless altered by an outside force. 2, have they tried placing a high powered magnet next to the slits instead of the camera? Does this alter the wave pattern at all? 3, have they added different amounts of cameras in different positions ( using 1-5 cameras in different quantities) to see if positioning and quantity of cameras affect the behaviour of the photon? These are a few of the questions I have that I would love to have answered as I’m unhappy with the wave/particle duality explanation and believe it’s simply down to interference. I hope you see this and decide to give it a go and I always enjoy you videos. Always learning something new here.

Evolutionarily speaking, it makes sense that they can't get stuck in their own web. When prey struggles, it would prove more detrimental to the spider if it were to get caught in its own web. It also would mean they could never access the prey as it would get tangled in its own web as it wrapped and processed its meal. It's not surprising that they developed an immunity or resistance to the substance in their web

Spider #1 -- definitely a jumping spider; I don't dare try to get much deeper in the taxonomy than that. :) However, that family (salticidae) does not use silk for hunting, only for shelter. (Also, they do not weave funnels, you were seeing the den area.) As such, none of the web should be sticky. Spider #2 - I concur with the other commenter that this spider is probably in the family agelenidae. Probably somewhat sticky web, but most spiders in that family don't use web to trap prey, just to find it; instead they tend to bite prey through the web, after the prey has indicated its presence through vibrations. In any event, you're far more fearful than you need to be here. :) These spiders are completely harmless.

They both didn't stick because I believe that this web doesn't have any of that sticky "glue". Most spiders also have microscopic hairs that could contribute to the stick repellant. I have done some experiments with garden spiders, I've thrown the same species into another web and it got entangled. The other one quickly climbed over and took the meal. That's because this spider species catches it's prey, while the one in the video is unknown. Like he said, it did seem to make a tunnel type web. Maybe it's not for catching prey, that would explain why it's not sticky. But it doesn't explain why it stuck to his hand.
