Many years ago I owned a Rel Storm sub. The difference it made to the sound of my speakers was incredible ... from the bottom to the top of the frequency range the sound was altogether richer with more depth, air and realism. Richard Lord used to call it “the Rel effect”it was definitely a thing, and not just placebo.

I bought the Kef LS50 Wireless II. I was disappointed with the overall listening experience. I added an old sub from my surround sound WOW!!! The speakers came to life. I plan on buying 2 REL HT/1003 Subwoofers, one for each speaker. Subs make all the difference.

I got a REL Stentor over 20 years ago. Yes it improved my Maggies no end, but the surprising thing is the improvement in unexpected ways. A soprano voice for instance sounds much better, so does a flute. You might not think that there is any bass energy for either, but turn the sub off and you notice its absence right away.
@nespressoman

A great example is Art Garfunkel's recording of "Someone to watch over me". It starts with an acoustic guitar that makes the sub work like crazy.
@robertbaird7001

@@nespressoman A acoustic guitar has a lower frequency of 80 htz so that would explain why and why bass is so important to how things sound as it present more than we think it is. A piano can go down to 27 htz and you would not associate piano music with bass.

I went to a demo of Townshend supertweeters which go up to 90 kHz. I took my wife along & some CDs we know. The shopowner did the A/B test a few times on different pieces. Then my wife said, "you have to buy the supertweeters" It was clear as day & night - without: dull & lifeless - with: airy and fills the room. So I guess we have a similar phenomenon. I'm considering a pair of REL T7i's. Your A/B demo was very clear to me, but I've trained my ears for 50 years now... All the best, Rob

This is such an interesting topic. I had a home demo of the Rel S3 SHO, Rl T9i and compared it to my monitor audio silver series sub. In the end I chose the Rel S3 SHO and the reasoning for this was because of the benefit to the midrange from my b&w CM series speakers. It was subtle but very much there. Vocals just sounded like they had more presence and were more life like. One of my observations of this pheromone was that the effect was moat pronounced in live recordings (such as concerts) and movies. In both these cases I imagine there are greater sub-harmonics which add to the realism as opposed to a lot of studio recorded material which has been recorded in a relatively acoustical treaters / dead room and then in some cases had low frequency information cut.

Wow! Remarkable. This is what I was expecting (hoping) to hear if the sub woofer was really doing its job in supporting mid range and treble. The unsupported track sounds choked compared to the supported; the sub actually "liberates" the true sound. Stellar. Thank you much for the demo! Now, the problem what to do with my poor little mini system Onkyo CS-N755 here in Puerto Vallarta. The worst sound is with flute and recorder when streaming my Otto´s Baroque. Goes to hell like a cheap system. Not so bad in CD and FM radio modes, but the system could use some help. Not in bass really, but in mid range and treble support. But what sub to get in a lower price range, as the little system does not warrant investing too much. Maybe I am asking for too much. But I have heard good sound from an inexpensive system, such as that I have in the US (a Sherwood receiver and Polk towers), so improvement may not be impossible.

Sub sure makes a good difference!🤔😬. With rock music, AC/DC it might hurt things as things get louder but with the music examples heard it sure was better with subs! I usually don’t like subs as well. Every time I go into a demo room I have them turn off the subs because they usually muddy things up! Not in this example. You have the volume of the sub set just right.😉

Purchase advice: Rel S3 SHO vs Rel T7i/Kef kube 10b/12b? I found a seller that would sell the Rel S3 SHO (almost new) for half price (900 euro) , so the same price as the 12b since he is upgrading to a larger set. I am using Kef LSX speakers. Which would you recommend? Can a subwoofer be ‘too big’ for the speakers? The thought process is that buying a good subwoofer now and using it with LSX for some time until I buy bigger speakers in a few years.

In a nutshell. If you don't have seperate Preamp and PowerAmp it is better to avoid mini DSP / Exteanal dsp that let you equalize the main speakers with Subwoofer. So those with Integrated amp can not use mini DSP / External dsp and thetefore better avoid Subwoofer. Otherwise it is too complicated and the only way would have to be choosing a Subwoofer with Speakers line in and out ( 8 speaker lines) in order to create this equilibrium by making the main speakers use the same DSP of the Subwoofer. One thing to mention is that DSP wether seperate DSP or the Sub DSP when influences the signal tgat comes to the main speakers might not be the way to go for audiophiles since you are adding extra component between the main speakers and your HiFi system. Soo. best buy a good set of speakers that go as liw as 40 Hz and enjoy their dynamics. No need for this extra low bass. Tge bass of the speakers is good enough. This will be a three way speakers not two way. Like sonus faber sonetto III or V or PS audio speakers . Or Like more echonomical Dali oberon 5 or something like that....

Hi. By connecting the subwoofer to the speaker terminals of the amp will not cut the lower frequencies to the speakers. Isnt it better if we connect the subwoofer to the dedicated subwoofer output of a device and the device would split the lower frequencies to the sub out and the rest of frequencies to the next gear( ultimately to the speakers) . Isnt this arrangement better when the lower frequencies are taken away from the speakers in this way? And how can a subwoofer (connected high level) help in the mid range, treble of the speakers if the same signals are still going to the speakers (when without the sub)?
@PursuitPerfectSystem
@PursuitPerfectSystem 4 года назад
That is not the idea for this type of connection - this type of connection is designed to fill and support where the speakers are either rolling off or weak in performance. You can have double bass i.e. the speaker and sub doing bass together so long as they are in phase and time aligned - same thing really. The reason bass improves mid range and treble is do with perception. 9/10 a speaker sounds bright not because its bright but because there is not enough bass to balance the sound, I am not referring to sub bass I am referring to mid range really and deeper. A lot of speakers suffer from SBIR problems in rooms and normally a speaker is placed for best mid range and stereo image sacrificing bass performance - this is audiophile mistake number 1 but its a trade off whatever way you look at it. If you use subwoofers you can offset this trade off, but there are technical and setup challenges to doing this right as well if you really want to get it nailed. Work = reward though right

I would say, of course! Doesn´t need to be a REL. Doesn´t need to be by high level. A subwoofer can actually increase the "air" at the top and make the highs sound more clean and with more extension. The mids have more "body" and the sound become more "organic". Impressive sound!

It's TRUE it doesn't need to be a rel, but, the high level of the rel let's you use any amp u have and therefore has the same signature sound of the amp u are using. That's the benefit. And also there aren't many subs that are super quick to react like a rel. They are never muddy sounding.

Wow, they sound just like my speakers! Sorry for the sarcasm, but audio demos over RU-vid are a huge fail. It’s a fool’s errand to try to judge audio over this medium. A note on this demo - while you specify when high level is used, you don’t when it’s not. If you weren’t using it when the caption was absent, I couldn’t tell. It would have been nice if you had displayed a caption when low level was used. Cheers

the sub is in use then its not - so its sub on and then off and you can get a lot from good recordings of anything, far more than someone using descriptive words and leaving the rest to your imagination. but like every recording it's only as good as the playback system and even though it's a diluted version of the real thing it's still a useful thing. If we can't gain anything from a recording hifi and home cinema is pointless really
@billd9667
@billd9667 5 лет назад
I would disagree. While I can get a sense of the room acoustics, even that depends on your mic placement. There are just too many variables - your media, electronics, speakers and their time alignment, acoustics, mic and mic placement, RU-vid and it’s processing, my WiFi hardware, my DSP processor, my speakers, my room acoustics and then, finally, my damned ears and brain. The only things I can almost make out are your recording space and major differences in speakers. While I can sense those differences in the latter, I am ill equipped to define them unless they are significant and glaring. In this case, I’m sorry, but they are not. While my speakers are not “high end” or super revealing, they do cover the full audible spectrum and I can A-B sources quite well on them. The same can be said for my electronics. I’m sorry, but I just cannot depend on this “source” (defined as all of the factors in the chain from your medium to my system) to evaluate anything except for significant changes in one or more elements in the chain. In this case, I’d compare those differences to cable comparisons in that any audible changes are debatable at best.
@PursuitPerfectSystem
@PursuitPerfectSystem 5 лет назад
@@billd9667 most of the variables you mention are constant across all my videos so the more of them you watch the more you become used to the sound of my room and system played back through your chosen medium. Same as any demo of any new system there is a lot to disect with your eyes and ears. Spend some time with it though and the differences then become very easy to pick out. in this video I played the sub on it's own so viewers could hear its hardly doing anything so there wont be a miracle amount of difference but a difference still. Lots of viewers are getting a lot from my videos I am sorry you are not. I would try headphones over a system for playback rather than speakers and a good smart device as a source over a laptop or a computer web browser you tube sounds better this way ime If your still not getting much from my videos maybe go and watch others where all they do is talk about things and then you can use your imagination to assume things maybe that works better for you. with all those ports and passive radiators its going to be a mess, if you ever get the chance, audition some sealed speakers and subwoofer, it is going to be a lot better and easier to work with. i am curious about the new 15" rel subwoofer, its not made for music with disturbs me, i am not all that knowledgeable about surround sound but lfe channel don't contain all the much quick bass i think, but using a subwoofer to aid in the front channel bass must be much better option, ditch the lfe altogether. quality bass benefits anything it playes so why does home theater get shafted and only sold worse subwoofers?

Most REL subs are in fact sealed. REL have been designing subs since their inception in 1990. REL makes subs primarily for 2 channel stereo systems.

2:50 “we can *discuss* the results after.” DISCUSSION?? WHAT DISCUSSION?? PLEASE TELL ME HOW USEFUL THE DISCUSSION (BELOW) IS? “(8:24) It’s an interesting one isn’t it....it’s a very very interesting one....(9:17)...so again, it’s a really interesting one that you can hear a difference...(9:22)...I think I know what’s going on there, I’m pretty sure I have an idea and understanding what’s happening there to make that difference....(9:32)...as you can probably hear it’s not an easy thing to fully integrate.” As far as I can tell, your idea of a discussion is to run through the specs of your gear and room, because that’s all we learned in the “discussion”. I know you love your gear/room, but wasn’t the idea to discuss the differences in sound? FFS why didn’t you tell us what differences you could hear live in the room??? Instead of leaving us to guess? @@GodfreyMann this was shot quite a while ago and a lot has changed since this video I terms of how I work and how I structure and plan videos out. Still probably don't explain things that well. I was talking to rel recently about getting some different subs in for some high level testing so yes possibly a follow up in the works. This is not confirmed yet as covid is messing supply up etc

I stopped using the hi-inputs on my REL sub because it was the most difficult thing I have ever had to set up in my room. Positioning of the sub, knowing the exact point to set the crossover and volume of the sub was so complicated. I was worried about the main 804s and the REL doubling up at the crossover point and causing problems, and it was a total pain in the arse. I know I set it up wrong because REL are a brilliant company and now I need to do this again. The one thing that REL do not make clear is that people should be VERY careful using their main speakers full-range if they are standmounts or small speakers that cannot go that low. Accidents can easily happen. Terry, I am glad you have started to change your opinion on this as it may give me the incentive to try again.

Hi Jim - this is just one demo - I need to have a good play to see what is happening and then see what benefits there might be for using the sub over high level against other methods. Lets see what the next few weeks and months bring once I have had some time to look at it more :)

@@PursuitPerfectSystem Cheers Terry. REL did tell me that using two matching subs on the L&R speaker outputs is the way to go but I only have one at the moment as you know. If you do get this sorted and love it, PLEASE do mine when you come over to Dirac! Thanks.

@@nespressoman You can also try just lowering the bass level in your speaker settings and then turn the level slightly to compensate for it. Definatly keep the crossover on full though. I do this with my bookshelf speakers for my surrounds.

I prefer playing music without a sub. Most music b&w 683 s2 can handle on its own. Thats why i prefer floorstanding speakers always. For movies i would for the most part use a sub.

Some people get a lot from them but like all recordings you need to listen on a decent playback system to get something from it, if you check the channel I often do both

no it just drowns them if you need more bass buy a better speaker it's all about balance not boomy bass only poor quality speakers need subs
@oysteinsoreide4323
@oysteinsoreide4323 5 лет назад
Every main speaker will roll off in the bass, especially at lower volume. So a sub makes the bass come to life at normal listening levels regardless of main speaker. Even the largest main speakers should have a sub to help the bass response.
@nespressoman
@nespressoman 5 лет назад
Justin, you are wrong. REL subs are not just about more bass and are not boomy if set up right. It is all about the positioning, hi-level crossover point and volume. They integrate so well that you will not know they are there.
