Can a Top-10 NBA Draft Bust Be Salvaged? | The Ringer

Being a top-10 draft pick is one of the most prestigious badges an NBA player can wear, but that blessing can easily become a curse. Even if a player fails due to circumstances beyond their control, they might be branded with the most undesirable four letters in all of sports: B-U-S-T. In this video, The Ringer’s J. Kyle Mann analyzes the past 20 years of NBA drafts to determine whether those who have not excelled immediately in the NBA still have any hope to climb back to glorious heights.

I still believe the Hawks will be very happy with Trae but it's RIDICULOUS that 3 different franchises passed on the guy who was Euroleague MVP at 18. It's only gonna look stupider as time goes by and Luka continues to improve... we're gonna look back on it as the peak of anti-foreigner bias.

The team you are drafted by plays the biggest role. There's a reason the sun's have had multiple busts while the Spurs keep finding gems. Teams need to help players cultivate there talent and place in the league, as, for most of them, the league is too challenging to do it alone.

Agreed. You can have the safest, most reliable, most secured draft pick but put them in a team with terrible management and unidentifiable team identity and even they will struggle to produce. We tend to point fingers to players being busts but it's time we as the fanbase call out the actual scouting reports, the team owners and the management for their failure to cultivate prosperous careers and winning culture.

@t4d0W
@t4d0W 4 года назад
Inversely some rookies overperform their actual value in a shitty draft year. You can look back at 2013 and top 10 was overall disappointing in general and Dipo is not a top 10 player in the making in comparison to other draft classes where the top 1 or 3 players were game changers. MCW at 11th was your ROTY who didn't have a jumper but put up good numbers in a bad team, which Hinkie used as trade bait to essentially gather more useful assets. Years later and MCW is pretty much the same guy that can't play big minutes because other players are more talented and can do more than him. Meanwhile Giannis was a project at 15th and would be a top 5 player if he shattered all expectations to go along with his elite metrics. Fortunately he did and he sets that elite niche for himself today.

If you stick around as an above average role player, I don’t think it’s fair to call them a total bust. Also if a player dealt with injuries, I don’t think it’s fair either.
@razkable
@razkable 4 года назад
tyson chandler is the ultimate bust to average to starting stud caliber but never star top 10 picked player career to look at...he proves that circumstance fit need and potential are within anyone's future if luck is on their side and patience...my man out of high school had no offensive skills whatsoever was a skinny 6 foot 10 slow robotic puppy as a rookie and he played 3 years as a total bust before he proved he had backup center potential and then he became a starter on playoff teams and then a gold medalist fiba champ and won a title and dpoy was a 2 time all star he looked good but then he became mediocre again after a 5 year peak but whats funny about tyson is he didnt improve his skills from 2006-2014 much..he just played better it was really odd because he had a injury plagued lull in 2009-2010 but then was great again in 2011...up and down

I think drafting and the big boards out there influence that. The concept of scouting players ranked in the area of your pick, and if your guys gone or your needs are different than what's available, teams opt for the "best guy available". Generally the best guy available is the guy who is the consensus (for example) 8th overall pick. You take him, you might have done your homework and think he's gunna be fine, but the problem I'm trying to depict is the unwillingness to go farther down to get the best guy and maybe even the best fit. You want to take the best value for your pick. The smart teams take players they want, not based on the picks "value" but based on who they value. Those teams also capitalize on scenarios where they know who they want, and they have an idea where hell go, and they seek out that opportunity. Teams like Boston in the Fultz draft, or San Antonio in the Kawhi draft. Both those times they did their research, took players who fit their system, their mould, and showed them what they needed. Its obviously not all this, and there's a bunch more to it, but I do believe this is a bit of a factor.

@t4d0W
@t4d0W 4 года назад
Its a worthy tradeoff. Hinkie worked the acting drafting/tanking/asset bargaining better than most franchises. For all those years of tanking (and blackballed by the NBA to stop doing it) he gave the Sixers Embiid (a top 10 talent) and SImmons (a super versatile top 20 player) along with assets/role players that can ride the team out possibly to Finals contention in a few years. Which current GM Elton Brand is trying to make something out of. Many bottom feeding teams like NY Knocks can wish for such a scenario and even SUCCEED in building an actual team out of it. Instead of continuing to suck for their fans in the coming 2020 decade.

top 10 pick is an overrate label. Some drafts only have obvious top 1~3 stars and everyone after that are taking projects, messing up on prospects based on scouting reports or finessing the trade markets to move up/down to get their guy AND value. Then you have guys sitting on the 10~15 who aren't oozing in potential but are NBA ready starters or even stat busters in shitty teams. You can't blame the talent for who they really are but the franchises sometimes dodge the bullet for putting the guys they want on a pedestal purely on potential/bad scouting. I can go way back when Rick Pitino picking perosnnel for the Celtics and had Antoine Walker and decided to pick a young Chauncey Billups seeing both to be his 'version' of Stockton and Malone. You also had that doofus David Kahn pick talent for Glen Taylor's T-wolves and the best team he assembled after five years was Kevin Love, Rubio and a buncha scrubs.

If Luka and Booker were together all you need is a 3 and D guard who can defend point guards to go with them, a versatile defensive 4 and a rim protecting, screening, rim running 5 with some offensive skills other than catching lobs and scoring under the bucket and that's already an easy playoff team. Not listening to Veterans is the worst thing you could do. It could be the worst veteran ever, he learned from his mistakes and doesn't want you to make the same.

I was gonna say JJ Redick, but he was picked 11th. His first few years were pretty damn bad, he didn't even start a game until his 3rd year and it was only a handful of them. Redick was a guy who played a lot of college ball so he was not a kid, he was expected to come in and contribute and he did not. He eventually evolved into a 15-18ppg scorer for almost 10 years and is one of the better shooters in NBA history.

I was expecting a lot of Wiggins in this video. Seems like if it's possible for anyone to be a successful reclamation project, it's him with Ryan Saunders and Rosas.

Wiggins has always been a decent rotation player though. People do expect him to be better but to even mention him as a bust is insane.

@@Sheltwon he is below a replacement level player. He actively hurts the team

See with Wiggins, I think he is a solid 4th~5th best player in a championship team. He will forever be limited offensively, can pass the ball if given the right spacing and once in a while explode easily for 20+ points against starting lineups and more than likely against second units (if the lineup is staggered). And at best a value at 20$ million a year or below. But that old fart Glen Taylor thought he was a top 10 player and decided to pay him like one for SEVEN YEARS. Meanwhile Glen paid Towns his actual worth (whose looking like a top 10~15 player this year and is always a HUGE factor when the Wolves win) and with money tied up to shitty deals, he'll have a hard time sniffing the playoffs with the Wolves because they will never good value talent around him.

Honestly KOC is right. Thats the kinda guy that signs a 2nd unite Mid level exception on a team primed for a championship run. Unfortunately for KOC that will not be the Knicks
