Preston is brilliant. His skit on cluster B personalities was EERILY accurate. He is going to make the biggest difference in the world of medicine.

Preston getting in trouble for “unprofessional behavior” gives new meaning to that short he made on unprofessionalism. Great collaboration, I hope to see more in the future.

the surgery department going after a med student who makes a funny tiktok instead of doing a little introspection on their toxic culture is so telling.

I saw a hand doctor who works in Ortho today. He's the most amazing man in the world to be able to take a hand apart and then put it back together and then to have it work perfectly, pain-free. Now that I'm 69, I have a much greater respect for you doctors. I used to work in research with doctors, and 10 percent were as good as you guys.

I'm now at point in podcast talking about the ortho character, and I have to tell you that I was watching the content of an ortho surgeon who used the word "bro" in the content like 7 times, and I thought of your beloved ortho character. I love that ortho bro has names like "feelings bro" and "gas bro" for the other characters. 😂

Favorite related anecdote: I practiced for many years at a university-affiliated hospital. A very experienced, superb general surgeon had alopecia totalis universalis, an autoimmune disorder which caused him to lose every hair on his body. But he still wore a surgical cap to cover his completely bald pate in the OR!

it makes so much sense to me that he was nearly expelled from med school by some ortho attending. "professionalism" can be used by those in power with absurd egos to bully those with less power when their vanity or sense of self is challenged (btw I love my ortho collegues... but have met some toxic af ortho attendings) (edit: clarity)

I have a similar story about upsetting a physician with my sarcastic storyline from my first year of medical school writing for a student run “newspaper”. Yes pre-internet storytelling was a thing! Would be willing to share with the Glaucomfleckens someday if interested.

Professionalism: in the ancient times, you couldn't advertise your medical center. You couldn't have a professional web page. Now, the hospital and clinic has a website and all my personal information from my chart has been stolen, along with my payment information. Let's talk about professionalism. They're offering a free membership to Experion to watch out for identity theft. How dare they do that to a medical student.

That red line story made me laugh out loud, and it is very validating--I was observing in OR as a student nurse, all gowned up like everyone, and the surg intern asked me to tie her gown. I don't think I have to explain what happened next, but there was some of that vocalization happening from the circulating nurse. Looking fwd to your IC show. How do Patreon peeps access the "credentials" for the meet and greet (I couldn't get this video to load on Patreon right now).

Hello lovely Glaucomcasters. Your charming guest talked a bit about ADHD which has inspired a guest idea. Perhaps try Mom on the Spectrum or one of the many Autistic RU-vidrs out there. I have ASD tend to think of ADHD as part of the neurodivergent family. It's sort of like seeing a cousin at a health advocacy family reunion. Perhaps you could do an episode with an neurodivergent parent raising neurodivergent children about how to make kids more comfortable at eye appointments. Learning all around. Cheers

I was 27 and was having my tonsils removed. As this was my first surgery I was of course not wanting to bare my all to the staff. I had 4 nurses hovering over me and I said "I came in wearing this gown and I expect to be still wearing it when I wake up." Once I started waking up in recovery I was wrapped up like a cocoon. I started feeling around for the gown to make sure I was still wearing it - It wasn't there. They finally come to unwrap me out of the 8 sheets I was wrapped in and when they got to the fifth sheet there was my gown. I learned that day you don't ever say anything like that to the nurses because they will go out of their way just to mess with you. They had their fun at my expense and I tell it to the doc before the operation. They all get a kick out of it and have a good laugh over it. It's a good ice breaker before surgery

To answer the question at 31:40, Preston answered one of the two options I'm aware of. The other option is to pay back the military's financial backing up to that point as a loan. The interest rate I saw was 2%. If you choose the loan and become eligible to be a doctor again you may get an invite back into the program. There may be other options as well but these two are what we're presented on the case I observed.

i got question for you. Why are med students able to draw blood better and almost painlessly than a op nurse (some nurses in the EU are the ones drawing blood) or doctor? Some context, when i was younger i had to go through some surgeries and also did some blood donations and those always were horrible even though my veins were always there for the taking (i got beautiful veins you know what i mean ;P ). But during my first med school years we (med students) used to practice drawing blood prior to our practical exam and those were always almost painless (with one exception when a fellow colleague that was in charge of applying the bandage post attempt was to eager and applied the trade while the needle was still in.) Then years later, during my residency i had to take some blood and the exact same colleague took my blood and she just jammed the thing like there was no tomorrow. is it because we become callous to the pain of our patients over time? what do you think? goes without saying but i will do so nonetheless, I really appreciate your clips and this new format is also very nice.
