Can Albums Ranked - A countdown of 20 Albums in 11 minutes personally selected by Eddy Bamyasi

Can were perhaps the quintessential Krautrock band. Formed in 1968 they released some of the most exciting and original rock music ever heard over the next decade to 1979 when they disbanded, before a brief reunion for one last album in 1989. Here I select 20 Can albums including the 12 official studio albums plus some of the best collections of unreleased material, outtakes, live tapes, and solo works, and rank them. Compilations including the recent Singles Collection have been excluded. Each album has a very short audio clip which, touch wood, the copyright owners (Mute, Spoon etc) have so far gratefully allowed.
I've also prepared a Spotify playlist showcasing one (track) from each ("OFE") of these albums: open.spotify.com/playlist/3a2kZXb1IFPSTLvqPCyfnN?si=b452a1bf78574e8a
To read more about Can and this ranking please visit my blog article at: medium.com/6-album-sunday/can-albums-ranked-from-worst-to-best-45cd3cb5b218
Although there is often some consensus that develops over the years with these sorts of lists opinions are of course personal. Which albums are essential - say if you only bought 3? Which are the real turkeys to avoid, if any? Are any of the latter period albums worth reconsideration or did Can lose the plot after 1974? Have any been left out altogether? Please comment below with your own preferences.

Dude, "Flow Motion" is their most underrated album; there's only two "disco" tracks on it. Maybe it's because I play drums, but "Babylonian Pearl" and "Flow Motion" are two of the amazing grooves ever grooved.

Great video. I had a Tago Mago vinyl from my parents for years and only now decided to dive deeper into their works. After I saw their discography I felt overwhelmed so your video was a good primer on what to check out first.

It’s all worth listening to. If you’ve got a long drive, it’s brilliant to stick a whole album on start to finish, chill out and be amazed by their music. My current drive to work is 45 mins, I put an album on, and they take me to a whole new place. It’s an amazing exploration with them.

Well you did concede that tyour Future Days ranking was controversial. It ranks highly in all-time Prog rock album lists (as does Tago Mago). It is my personal favourite with Monster Movie ranking 2nd. Tago Mago would be 3rd, but I only put it there because it is such a challenging listen. Agree that Landed doesn't get the credit it deserves - it almost pre-empts the New Wave, particularly with the more radio friendly early tracks. The live version of Vernal Equinox on BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test is a terrific performance.

Really surprised at the future days placement. Although I've only heard the 4 albums damo is on, I would put future days at least top 2 with tago mago 1st, and maybe even have it above tago mago. What do you not like about it?
@eddybamyasi
@eddybamyasi 4 года назад
Thanks Aidan, I must be wrong as everyone agrees with you. It just has never struck me as so memorable as the other Damo albums - I don't find the drums so crisp nor the songs so focussed or powerful as on Ege or Tago. But maybe I should reassess in comparison with some of the other similarly ranked albums like Soon Over Babaluma. Granted having Landed above it is very controversial. I've also squeezed in a Holger solo and the Delay album above it which some wouldn't count.

@@eddybamyasi thanks for the response. I csnt really comment on it being better than any album without damo because those are the only ones I've heard, but yeah you should definitely revisit it I think its amazing. Maybe it's not for you though, nobody is right or wrong here since were talking about music which is subjective, I was just wondering what you didnt like about it. Thanks again, I'll check out landed and the other stuff you like more than future days

Eddy Bamyasi yes. I’ve always had a soft spot for late can. It’s what got me into them. Soon Over Babaluma was my first album by them, and Saw delight was my 2nd. So I have a lot of nostalgia for em. As with Landed..... I find it very boring and blah, like a worse version of future stuff.
@eddybamyasi
@eddybamyasi 4 года назад
@@z-twigrvsit618 Yes, good points. I think the later stuff does get a bit overlooked as the early albums were so revolutionary. I must give them all some more time. The first I heard actually was the Spanner album when I was about 18 which encouraged me to investigate more and then once I got Tago Mago I was hooked.

@CanAlternateLostTape
@CanAlternateLostTape 7 месяцев назад
@@eddybamyasi I put it above Tago Mago mainly because Ege Bamyasi presents a sound-world that only Can ever inhabited, while Tago Mago sounds more similar to what other psychedelic bands were doing at the time. Ege Bamyasi manages to be even more avant-Garde and eerie than Tago Mago yet has incredible pop songs-I’m So Green, Vitamin C, Sing Swan Song, Spoon-a rare feat in the world of experimental rock. The perfect balance of weirdness and seductiveness.

True Ege Bamyasi is a perfect album with great songs, weirdness and a bit of avant garde too - and all in a compact 35 minutes. Tago does have some very experimental parts that are a bit random but gets my vote just because of Hallelujah@@CanAlternateLostTape

Hmm, I guess no Can fan is ever likely to agree on a top 20.... other than Future Days so far down is pretty weird.... Personally, I love both Flow Motion (especially the superb title track) and Landed, but despise Saw Delight and the other awful album that followed it. I also think Rite Time is a lot better than it's given credit for and it was great to have Malcolm back. I've done an order of 12 (I think) but the order could just as easily change tomorrow.... 1. Future Days 2. Monster Movie (why does your track run slow?) 3. Landed 4. Soundtracks (it has to be up there for the greatest track of all, Mother Sky) 5. Flow Motion 6. Ege Bamyasi 7. Tago Mago 8. Soon Over Babaluma 9. Delay 68 10. Rite Time 11. The Lost Tapes 12. Limited Edition (which deserves higher just for Mother Upduff and the sublime Gomorrha)

Thanks for your interesting list Andrew. Intriguing to see Flow Motion above Ege and Tago. With further listening my ranking could change as I'm a lot more familiar with the early period than the later. I get quite a bit of grief for Future Days so I do conclude I'm mistaken and I should probably revisit and hear what I missed. When I posted I had to rejig a few sample tracks which were continuously taken down for Copyright reasons - I don't recall but I must have slowed that one down deliberately to avoid the bots.
@andrewhounsome5969

@@eddybamyasi It's all a matter of personal taste. Flow Motion is just one of those albums I've always loved. Personally, I think that half of Tago Mago is brilliant but the other half takes a lot more getting into. It really doesn't matter as long as we enjoy what we want to. It's a bit like The Faust Tapes. Personally I think it's probably the greatest album I've ever heard and few weeks pass without it getting an airing here. But others find the more accessible So Far and lV more to their taste....
@eddybamyasi
@eddybamyasi 4 года назад
@@andrewhounsome5969 The second 1/2 of Tago Mago is certainly challenging and a bit random. I used to have the double LP where there was a massive scratch across Side 3 (thankfully not Side 2!). I'm ashamed to say I don't even know Faust Tapes - I'll give it a spin. I have Faust IV only.

@@eddybamyasi Oh you really must. Some people deride it as a patchwork of 'bits' but for me, it's a masterpiece, especially side 1. Vastly superior to all of their other work.
