This is the Can-Am Spyder RT Limited, a three-wheeled motorcycle built by BRP, a company very well known for the Spyder plus snowmobiles and jet skis. This Canadian company has been building the Spyder for 13 years and is a remarkably successful product for those looking for the open-air experience a motorcycle provided with an added safety net of two front wheels. The Spyder is built to accommodate a rider and a passenger with superb comfort and lots of standard technology. So is it any good? Let's find out!

As someone who's a disabled war vet, TheDriveGuyde I have to disagree with your assertion that the Can-Am Spyder isn't something that a rider could fall in love with. I used to enjoy my two wheeled motorcycles (sport and chopper), but those days are long gone thanks to an insurgents five bullets. I'm very grateful that Can-Am, Polaris, and a handful of other companies decided to create this segment. This gives disabled people like myself and able-bodied senior citizens the opportunity to fill the air rush past them, but in a safe and secure manner.

The 3400 km tour I took this summer afforded me many more memorable views of the scenery than I would get on my 2 wheeler, simply because I could afford to look around without worrying about the demands of controlling a 2 wheeler. So for touring, no more 2 wheeler, I'll be riding my 'toaster' while 'burning' a path to riding bliss!

I'me afraid that you still have a 2 wheeled approach to gear shifting, the Spyder does not need you to close then open the throttle when changing gear. Just keep the throttle at the same position then press the paddle and the bike will do all the adkustment for you and do a smooth change. There can be a bit of a clunk at low speed and gears but it's very smooth beyond second gear. Also as far as starting it will always be in neutral after startup regardless of which gear you left it in, just remember to use the brake when starting and changing into first. As far as keyless starting goes this is the best thing for professional bike thieves, just needs a receiver to pick up the signal they can take the bike anytime. I'll stick to the key which uses a low range security signal to allow the bike to recognise it, safer than the keyless, they may be able to pick up the signal but useless without the key. New keys must be programmed into the system by the dealer. Central locking for the various panniers etc would be useful but not always needed, I generally only need to open one at any time. I don't see why you would want a Harly trike, less stable and less reliable, new ones having major brake problems causing serious accidents. I probably do more riding longer distances now than on my BMW K1600GT so it is a bike for fun. My plan for next year is a 3000 + mile trip involving touring the alps.

Your comments on the Can-Am Spyder are spot on. Although I feel the HD Tri-Glide fit and finish (paint) is superior, the ride of the Spyder with the stock suspension, blows the Tri-Glide out of the water! Cheers, Safe Travels. 🙂 🏍

I'm not disabled, other than being 68 years old, but give me this over a Honda VTX 1800 every time for two up riding. It seems to me to be much safer with the three wheels, the no heat coming up from the engine, & the ride is very smooth. My wife feels safe on it and the ride is less tedious. These bikes aren't the head turners of a beautiful twin cylinder bike, but they are a great alternative to not riding. Plus the thought of disabled vets being able to ride is in itself enough reason to manufacture these bikes.

The Spyder is meant to be shifted up without rolling off the throttle. From first to second it has a bit of a lag on the Australian version, but the remaining shifting is very smooth.

can't wait to get a can am down the road when i'm older. for now my body is holding up on my light sport bike with 74mpg.... I sat on a can am limited at the dealership and holy cow did that feel like sitting on clouds. Can-am spyders are incredible machines. Definitely for those who don't want to worry about clutch and balance and downshifting anymore.

Great information on the new Can Am Spyders that others haven’t touched on. New subscriber to your channel because you are thorough and you get to the point without wasting time. I think most of your points are well taken. Perhaps one opinion you shared may differ from your audience. You say this machine feels like a tool and compared it to a utility such as a toaster in the sense that no matter what a toaster does it just cooks toast. This is saying that the Can Am isn’t exciting. Like yourself, I sorta know what you’re saying because I compared it like riding an atv. But like yourself, after riding all kinds of motorcycles you cannot compare it too that. Motorcycles have the lean, the clutching, just an overall different feel so in that sense yes, the Can Am is less stimulating. But after obtaining my first Can Am, I found that it’s a different kind of experience and excitement. Now people have a true better experience towing in far more safety, having people see your wide stance and the wider frame of your lights with the motoring public ‘seeing you.’ The excitement comes in the form of enjoyment of the ride because you have far more stability and safety that makes you pay more attention to your surroundings (both machine and the great outdoors). When I am on the two wheeled motorcycle, I am constantly looking much harder for road kill, pot holes, loose gravel, highway debri that takes away from the full enjoyment of the motorcycle ride. While I still look for these same road obstructions with three wheels, there is definitely more forgiveness with some of those things mentioned. I seem to enjoy the riding experience more because I am simply more relaxed but not complacent. Hopefully this makes sense. It’s hard to explain for me telling others this experience. Anyways, keep up the great work on your channel and look forward to more of your content.

Braveheart you are so right man I love my spider rt limited. This guy doesn't speak for me. In my first six months, I put seven thousand miles on my spyder. With my wife right on the back. I can't get rid of her😳I have ridden a motorcycle all my life. This is a wonderful change for me. I don't know what this guy means by a tool. Personally myself I will not buy another motorcycle. Once you get a spyder you can't do a couple of trips on it and make a proper assessment of it. you have to ride enough to understand it, and be comfortable on it. If you do you are going to fall in love with it. You might even want to put a ring on it. 😂😂

Excellent review. I especially liked your critique of the RT being a tool and not a toy. That’s specifically the reason I am buying one. It will be our second car. In my estimation the Spyder is the safest open air vehicle in the world. I would be buying it to travel from one city to another for my business. So it will definitely be a business expense. Once again, excellent review.

We test drove a Spyder several years ago before they had power steerimg and we didn't like the way it jerked from side to side with the least amount of imput, I tried to keep it straight but it was very jerky? Has the power steering improved that problem? My other question is about the ride for the passenger. We are on our second HD Tri-Glide and the ride input from the large rear wheels are very hash. I installed a pair of progressive shocks and only run 20 psi in the rear tires but when you hit a bump, like an expansion joint, or a pot hole the ride is terrible. Going down a perfect road is great, but there are not too many roads that are perfect, if you know what I mean? How smooth is the ride from the passenger seat? I would hope it is better, a LOT better than a HD Tri-Glide. It rhe steering has improved and the passenger ride is smoother, a Can Am Spyder RT Limited might be my next motorcycle.

Wow, I'm 79 in September, have been riding since 1963, Have a 1600 Nomad, Been Looking, I seriously want one of these. Been watching many videos here and got it down to a couple of colors and yes, it will be a Spyder Rt Limited, Has to be a used one for the price point, but hopefully in the weeks ahead I will be able to find one. The idea of being able to enjoy riding again with all the safety and just the feel of real enjoyment without the Two Wheel stuff is a game changer for me. So looking forward to having one. PS: we are the same height 6' 3" 235 lbs. The bike fits, and you have room for all your gear, oh, I could sell these for all the research I've put into Can-Am.

We had to go to three wheels a few years back after my wife's cancer in her brain caused her to have seizures. Our thought was if she had a seizure on a two wheeled motorcycle it might cause an accident injuring both of us and possibly others. Whereas on a three wheeled machine I think I should be able to pull over and tend to her needs without harm to anyone. She has battled cancer eight times. We chose the Harley Tri-Glide and put on 20,000 miles the first year. We are on our second Tri-Glide now and put on just a little over 10,000 last year. But our next will be a Can Am. Either the Spyder RT Limitied or the F3 Limited. I haven't made up my mind yet. It just seems to me the Can AMs are more refined than ANY Harley. I think the Spyder RT is the Ultimate touring machine for those who love motorcycles.

Shaft drive should be considered. Can Am continues to be plagued with belt/alignment problems. Get rid of belt drive and you will have me as a new customer. I'm 6'4" as well. I ride a goldwing with a slight mod on the seat raising it three inches cutting it back 4 inches. Which does not leave much room for the passenger. Which can am has. That said. My next bike will be the BMW grand America. No seat mod required because the bike seat has the room for two. The new Goldwing does not work for bigger/taller individual. The bike is a lot smaller.
