Can an ozone generator kill a house plant? I wanted to know so I built an ozone chamber and a few potted plants to find out. Get your ozone generator here: amzn.to/31g7nJq (affiliate link)
Most ozone generators are used for no more than 1 to 2 hours to do their job . Placing a plant almost beside the generator for 13 hours is a completely different scenario.
Correct, ordinary ozone treatments for rooms should not be more than 20-30 minutes. If was it was for 13-17 hours than plants will be safe for 20-30 minutes and then venting the room !
True but this demo makes me feel more comfortable running my ozone generator periodically for 3 hours in a big room that has a few big plants. We moved into an old military house on base that had musty mold smells plus bugs. I have been running the ozone generator in different rooms and closets for last 4 months. No more mold smell or bugs.
I'm using ozone generators when i'm in the room, but only for 2 minutes and if i have dry cough after ozone treatment i'm able to cough all out from my lungs. If the dose is correct i thing there is no problem. The generator that i have produces 20 mg/h
You could try a plant that is infested with something like Spidermites or Aphits to see if this could be a "non toxic" way to get rid of them. And if it work how much does the treatment affect the plant.
It does, 1hr every 6hrs will kill all pests from aphids and spider mites to gnats and mould and I can bet my bottom dollar on it. Air circulation is key along with negative air pressure
Can ozone mixed with water when sprayed on plants kill pests? How many hours does it take to kill pests? if there is any research on this, please let me know.. thanks@@AceLangley
You should do a test on potting sol that is infected with gnats and other bugs. I would not leave a vent rather just expose the plant to no more than 2 hours and run the ozone generator for 30 mins max. I use a card board box for my shoes. It does nuke the bad smell and the shoes dont smell bad for a couple of weeks after the treatment. I also use in my top loading washer to get rid of the smell. It works well.
Hi Zach, I appreciate the effort that went into creating the test harness and running the experiment. It is useful data - I honestly expected the ozone to damage the plant far more. Thank you.
That's funny, I was just thinking "maidenhair ferns are so temperamental already, you should try something hardier, like a pothos!" Que the pothos literally 3 seconds later.
Great experiment, thanks! I've been wondering about my houseplants, because I want to get one of those machines, and worried about the risk as I can't move mine every time. Now I'm confident, the damage will be even less than I'd expected. If your plants could handle that, I'm sure my plants will handle the little bit of exposure I have planned.
That's why I'm here. I have a whitefly infestation. These little bastards are nearly impossible to get rid of and are doing a ton of damage to delicate leafy plants like basil. I'm going to moving the plants to cold storage (not freezing) to knock them out and run the O2 generator in the area where the plants are kept.
@@MVortex2 well after a little testing I will say, the little bugs don't seem to last long at all. ozoned a plant for 10 mins at quite a high concentration. Nothing seems to be alive and the plant seems fine..
@@rayft1422 Thanks for sharing. I wish I saw this 3 months ago. I have very small gnats that prefer the soil of my Jalapeno and Habanero plants. I've treated them with neem and organic pesticides and the population dropped dramatically but they still survive. I'll have to try an ozone generator near the plants and see if it works.
Use an UV-C 253.7nm lamp to kill the bugs, it help the plant grow and kill the bugs also top your plant soil with cedar mulch which will also add a decorative feature to your plants and keep the bugs down !
I'd love to see what happens to strawberries that are infested with slugs, strawberry bud weevils, tarnished plant bugs, spittlebugs, or strawberry sap bugs.
Does anyone know of an online resource that lists out what happens to various materials when exposed to different doses, durations and frequencies of ozone? Will plastic crack or polyester upholstery break down after 1 hr of 2000g/hr ozone treatment once a month for 2 years when used to sanitize a car of mold, pollen, allergens?
did you use 40000mg/h generator in your experiment? just for completing the information. i'm thinking in using one for a few minutes inside a tent but i'm hestitating because i can't find good information. we got some spider mites and just generally like to get rid of unwanted guests. i know, there are other means, but i would like to learn about using an ozongenerator for the purpose. tent is 1x1x2m height.
I do it with my stinking boots in a cardboard box, only run the OG for 30 mins in the sealed box but leave the boots in overnight. Boots come out smelling like nothing. Also spray the inside of my boots with H2O2 first to increase the concentration of ozone.
I was reading many of the comments. They are puzzling. The leaves of the virtually indestructible pothos were so damaged that they died and fell of the plant. You commented about plant resilience, so the take away that most people who commented is that it is ok to expose my plants to ozone. The damage looked like ozone damage, but you did not show us the bottom of the leaf. Ozone has a very specific damage pattern on leaves. Also you should do a control with a box blowing air on the plant, to see if the airflow is the problem.
Thank you for sharing this. I was curious if I really had to remove any plants (vegetable and flowers) from any rooms 10x12 up to 14x18 that I wanted to treat for 1 or 2 hours with an ozone generator. I'm satisfied to think my plants will be fine, especially since my rooms are substantially larger than your box test and you plants also recovered.
You don't need to ozonate your room for 2-3 hours unless you are getting rid of mold, 20-30 minutes is more than enough, let it stand with the machine off for another 20-30 minutes and then vent with the windows opened for another 20-30 minutes or faster even still if you use a fan to help it vent before re-entering the room. The reason the government does not recommend ozone generators is mostly because 99% of the public is simply stupid and need to be handled with kid gloves !
When running an experiment you have to include controls. In this case, a negative control. Ideally, same type of plant that you do everything you do to the other, touching, watering, etc, except the ozone. But also put in a chamber with the same lights, for the same amount of time, but this time blowing plain air. Then you make a comparison. Otherwise, you can't tell if the changes int he plant were doing to the ozone or your handling.
Awesome! Love the idea! Like to know effects of ozone on common household dust mites and/or similar pests. Lots of people suffer from allergies and getting rid of dust mites is a futile fight. Some business claim it works. Does it? Maybe too hard to test this?
@@glasshammer291 Why would you say that? It was something very interesting to watch, but not an experiment. It can be a part of an experiment, but not an experiment per se.
Can you experiment with PVC window plastic that manufacturers use for toys? I want to eliminate cigarette smell from some collectible boxed toys I purchased but not sure if that would damage them
O3 generators do very well with this. I have used my O3 generator, one similar to what is used in this video, to eliminate cigarette smoke from my jacket when I visit a friend's house who is a smoker. I hang it in the garage and turn on the generator for about an hour and it smells much better. Nothing beats putting it in the wash, but this certainly helps greatly.
How about putting some common pests in the Ozone Box - Pantry Moths, Cockroaches, and Mice. I'm curious to see if they are killed by Ozone. Also, maybe provide them an escape chamber they can go to with fresh air to see if they will actively avoid the Ozone.
Pantry and clothes moths shun light so UV-A zappers don't work, so ozone and UV-C lamps are the last ditch weapons other than fumigate with naphthalene or paradichlorobenzene mothballs !
A company I know has experimented with a 03 generator for water in preparation for a deep water culture grow set-up in a commercial cannabis grow in OK. They need hundreds of gallons of water stored in tanks and since it it RO water, stuff can grow in it quickly, so it needs to be kept fresh without chemicals. The O3 injection seems to be working quite nicely and it is not affecting the nutrients in the water.
Fun! Is the bottom line! I've done similar experiments predating RU-vid, digital photography, and video. One of my favorites was taping Americiume-241 Sample Buttons (harvested from from smoke detectors) on plant leaves and oranges to later discover burns on the directly exposed surfaces. Also the subsequent results of sandwiching Dandelion seeds between Americiume-241 Sample Buttons, Most profound results! you must try that! I will be doing so myself again soon, and post my results. I challenge you to beat me to it! And, when we both do so, it will be legitimate empirical proof of the fascinating results. Working together! For Science!
I think the damaged leaves can have inside parasites, bacterial cell, viruses etc etc. So not directly the ozone do that. Ozone I think reacted to something and of course the end is some collapsed cells.
pretty interesting, yeah when we ozone'd our house we left the house plants inside and they were fine. that is only maybe 30 mins to an hour of ozone and you did all night with the machine directly on them. Think you are pretty safe leaving your house plants around, it isnt good for them but not going to kill them in low doses
He is using an Enerzen 0-777 11,000mg/h Commercial Ozone Generator that is designed for a 2,000sq/ft room. Running it in a shoe box sized box for 13-17 hours is simply overkill !
@@dncviorel Plants only get affected if you leave it on 48 hours straight in a small room ! Just 15-20 minutes of this in 200sq/ft room is enough to make you choke. I love these ozone generator, it's like bringing sunshine into places of the house that would otherwise not get any !
@@etow8034 There's so much warning about this ozone generators, yet when we put it to the test we see different results, not to mention that ozone is used in alternative medicine for curing chronic diseases, from what I've read. Yesterday I found an ozone generator service, in a gas station, and after 10 minutes of use I couldn't believe how good my car smells, exactly as you said, like sunshine or like the air in the forest after rain. I'm definitely getting one. I'm going to add that this smell is my favorite perfume since forever. :))) Thanks, buddy!
U may test it in closed environment, secend test is to prevent fan from blowing directly at the plant dont make the plant swing like that even without ozone it would dryout lol, no need for video if u dont want, a reply is more than enough thx
The ozone machine fan is fairly weak and is no different then if the plant was out in the wind. The ozone machine should not effect the amount of water content in the air either, as all it does is convert O2 to O3.
so if ozone is oxygen, plants feed off c02 and convert it INTO oxygen. it would make sense that plants dont like o3 if co2 is their food right? as humans we are oppisite, we breath in o2 and exhale c02, so wouldnt it be good for us?
We breathe O2; O3 will turn into O2 but only after doing some damage to something. Maybe that's another O3 molecule (2O3 -> 3O2), or a bacteria's cell wall, or a odor-causing VOC molecule, or maybe it's the inside of your lungs. Humans can totally breathe ozone, right after it gets done exploding like a molecular-sized fireball and ruining the day or whatever it happens to be next to -- and if that happens to be occurring in your lungs, they're going to appreciate the damage a lot less than they do the extra oxygen atom they have to work with afterwards.
Ozone cleans things in a pretty brute-force manner, sort of like an acid would. It'd tear up your lungs something fierce if you slept in a room full of it.
This is a ceramic plate ozone generator with no power at all. Maybe you have 0.05 g/h and cost about 50 dollars an Amazon. You should use generator that have at least 1 g/h nut this would cost you about 900 dollars.
Ozone generators do not introduce fresh air into an enclosed container to work it regenerates the same air in a closed-off environment to work as intended. Awaiting for that real experiment.
this is wrong way using ozone generator. instead should bubble the water for half hour or more, then water that pothos office vine, and make video the morning after. you will be amazed. alternatively, use that water as mouthwash, you will be amazed how clean and healthy pink gums could get, which is noticeable only if you have issues and spending $$1000s on lanap procedure for years before using ozonated water in this manner. keep experimenting :)
A coupla years late... clearly you have a penchant for knowledge... gonna run my Van De Graff generator for Halloween gonna take the plants in the garden window.. away
I'd like to know if I close the door sealing my livingroom and put an ozone generator on for 2-3 hours, will it kill the aphids and black flies that are plaguing my houseplant without too much damage?
