Ban characters? There is only one character you would EVER want to ban in this context and that is the opponent's main. What's the use banning overpowered characters if the opponent never plays them? I hope you like your sub character since that's ALL you're playing!
@justinfs
@justinfs 5 лет назад
That seems like strategy to me, I mean lets be real its a fighting game with multiple characters, you shouldn't play it as I MAIN RYU LOL the game. Most of the top players already have a sub if not it shows a bit of weakness. If these were just solos I see your point but it's a team even and the formula has worked for other competitive games.

I can't help but think that banning characters in a fighting game tournament, in general, is just the equivalent of saying, "Hi we can't balance our game so don't use this character. Thanks!" I understand teams and doing something like a point system for using certain low tier characters or secondary characters might be interesting but outright banning character use just seems like a giant WTF.

The difference between SFV and MvC is htat SFV is a 1v1 game, where MvC is a 3v3 game. You are required to learn and play multiple characters in MvC, but in SFV, you are able to learn one character and thrive. I dont think the ban will work for this iteration of SF. When Tokido plays at tournaments, I want to see him play Akuma, he is one of the best Akuma in the pro scene. I dont want to watch him play another character at a lower level. People watch the pro scene cause they want to see the game played at the highest level. Idk what they can do, something like KoF, but only require 2 character?

Another difference between this and UMvC3 X, is that UMvC 3 is a team game inherently, so a dynamic was being upset, rather than an entire team. Here, you're not opening up avenues for players to play creatively, and think on the fly, they simply have to adapt to a new character entirely.

This has to be one of the dumbest idea since the ads. Mobas have way over one hundred characters, much more limited moves (most only actually have 4). And would completely ruin players who excel at just 1 character (IE: most of high level players). It takes MUCH LESS TIME TO MASTER MOBA CHARACTERS. And thats why the picks are so volatile in these games. Pro moba players pick whatever is high tier and available.

So I think we are thinking a bit too small Capcom is trying to get in on Esports even more by pressing into the game area that is reserved for like cardgames like hearthstone where they try to dramatically increases variants even if it isnt usually in the favor of the better player because it looks good to the audience. I think this kinda ban per round only works if the game itself is build around it and had a lower bar to entry to where you would normally have 3 or 4 viable mains

Funny to watch this video after just watching week 10 of SFL. Personally I like the 'character ban'-rule. It gives the format a unique spin. Some strategies where really fun. For example: Justin Wong banning Dual Kevin's Rashid, so he would play G, so Nephew couldn't play G. Another fun thing was the 'Free Laura'-meme. An the other hand, Shine never got to play his main. All and all I think it's personal preference. This works in this season for me, but the rule can be a total disaster in the nest season and the hate this rule gets/got is understandable.

I think you're oversimplifying the strategy that would go into character bans. Yes, it's not on the same degree as MOBA bans, but hear me out: You can only ban one character, and there are 3 players on your opponent's team. You have to choose which player's main you want to ban. But also, If my memory is right, the character you choose to ban also applies to your team. So if Punk is on the opponent's team, but the best player on your team also plays Karin, do you want to ban Karin?

This video got suggested to me right after watching 2020 JP SFL's Grand Finals and I honestly think these takes against the ban aged pretty poorly. It played a huge part in the strategy of Daigo's, Nemo's and Tokido's teams during the Grand Finals. If it weren't for the ban, maybe we would never see Daigo having amazing sets playing Kage or, even worse, we wouldn't see the completely absurd Sako's Menat brought.
@crypticcorvus2879
@crypticcorvus2879 5 лет назад
Under these *very specific circumstances* I like the idea -- it's one ban for each team, right? So most team members will still be playing their mains, and whilst I do think most bans will just be "Who does their anchor main? What does Google say?" I still think it could be pretty interesting given that SF's competitive roster is slightly on the smaller side compared to, say, Tekken, making 'friendly fire' bans more likely, with far higher chances that someone on your team plays that character too. I think it would be a complete disaster outside of teams, but for this specific kind of competition, I can definitely see the appeal.

I play Paladins (i know, lame) buuuut competitive mode have a ban system that works fine, if they at least try this SF ban mode before getting mad on twitter maybe would be fun, i know that people want to use their mains but we have a 4 year game with 35 characters.

@rotatingdisc-479 5 лет назад
Paladins is not a fighting game. In Paladins, you are expected to be fleible in you're character choices to contribute to a strong team comp. Yes people don't like seeing the same characters over and over, but a character ban goes so far to the other extreme it's equally bad if not worse.

I’m honestly surprised fighting games don’t do this.. I play a lot of ranked Smite ( a MOBA) and banning characters is implemented thing. Each team gets between 2-6 bans depending on the ranked mode. It works so well in Smite. Maybe it won’t translate well but honestly I’m tired of playing against the same 3 characters every game on DBFZ everyday... well it’s just my opinion
@DonkeyFreckle
@DonkeyFreckle 5 лет назад
The problem is that the gods from Smite are not that hard to learn and grasp compared to a fighting game character. Obviously you have different skill ceilings with different gods like Neith being a much easier character to use compared to say Anhur, but in SF the knowledge gap is bigger still
@pandasbass7267
@pandasbass7267 5 лет назад
Killjoy a single character ban doesn’t seem to be bad though. I would think it would encourage lower tier characters becoming more popular. Plus there could be strats around banning. Pulling out a secret main during tourneys sound super hype.
@DonkeyFreckle
@DonkeyFreckle 5 лет назад
@@pandasbass7267 it does sound hype but a lot of pros have their time dedicated usually to 1 character and it shows when you see it and their secondarys are sometimes lackluster, which people will notice as well. If maybe they decide to do no multiple characters and say the opposing side wants to use the same character, they have to flip a coin to see who gets first dibs and if they lose* the first match they switch it around in game 2 (matches would be pretty long tbh)
@pandasbass7267
@pandasbass7267 5 лет назад
Killjoy eh diversity is great in fighting game imo or else we’ll see shieks, Fox and Bayos in every smash game( which we did). And it’s also boring for the viewers. This is just my opinion but ever player should have 1-4 characters that they’re really good at. It mixes it up and with a 1 fighter ban, it could help elevate that issue with modern fighting games

I think it would be much better for marvel vs Capcom as a regular thing. People tend to play a wide pool of characters in that game so it would be soooooo fun. Theres a lot of really enjoyable teams but they aren't worth shit next to the 50/50 and 0 to death type teams. Street fighter doesn't require you to play more than one character so most people specialize way harder. Seems a little nutty. It would probably be more fun to require each team to play a total of ten characters total or something drastically different that doesn't involve someone needing to balance developing their main with potentional needing to have a secondary on the off chance they might get banned you know. There's better ways to get more characters in play.

@kaoko111
@kaoko111 4 года назад
The sole reason for a pro league is to watch a high playing level in the matches. For sure the players must have one or two pocket characters for any purpose but at the end of the day people (and players) want to watch the Best of the best, how tournaments are going to achieve that if You don't let them use their mains? Imagine any other sport working like that, imagine the coach of the Real Madrid deciding that he will ban Messi when they play against the Barcelona. Banning in fighting games is just a last resort, not a standar rule.

DDR controller? So if i know someone that knows SF AND is a DDR god, would he easily kicks everyone butts? As for the character ban: I don't know, on one side, we will see more characters plaued on tournament, but on the other, players that especialize in one character may suffer from it, so i don't know, but props to Capcom in creating a team tournament. And, in the Be My Guest, are you going to mention the mind shattering Heihachi, Link and Spawn on Soul Calibur 2, or one of the ogs, like KOF 94, where characters from Fatal Fury, Art of fighting, Ikari Warriors, Psycho girl Athena (can't remember the original name of the game, this is just a guess) and oc together in an epic fighting game (screw Rugal, too op in 94)

Well, the comments appear to be a big echo chamber. Not too surprising I guess, but I wanna play devil's advocate. I can actually think of two characters to ban. The first being the opponent's main, the other being the character you struggle against. Honestly, I never cared for how supposed pro-fighting gamers would pick one character and decide to only use that one in 90% of scenarios. At some point, I'm not watching someone play Akuma, I'm just watching another Akuma. Of course, I get it though. We don't live in Smash Melee world where everyone is using Fox or whatever. Banning a Fang main from using Fang just makes the fight less interesting when he now has to use something more typical. So, I get it, but I see this ban stuff being fun to use on the players that pick the usual high-tier characters that I'm tired of seeing. It's just too bad there is no way to stop it from making the match more boring by banning those gimmick players that use weird characters for the attention.
