We often hear the words “crypto” and “blockchain” in the same sentence. With crypto getting a bad rap for being so bad for the environment, could we be ignoring the potential of blockchain - the technology that crypto is based on - to be used for good?
This episode of Spotlight dives into the role of blockchain in helping bring transparency into the supply chain - and holding companies accountable for their impact on the environment.
We’d love to know your thoughts on this topic! Let us know in the comments below.
Spotlight is a 12-part series on climate solutions created in collaboration with Earthrise and Bloomberg Originals.

Amazing storytelling and a breakdown of the complexity of blockchain, thank you so much for this wonderful work! *Does anyone have any recommendations on papers on the topic of blockchain for sustainability specifically?*

Running a blockchain takes so much energy though. It would have to be a really breakthrough system to offset it's energy cost.

You can run Proof of Stake and it doesn't require much energy at all to run.

Fresh perspective as how people are using blockchain has been notorious for its destructive effect on the environment

Only proof of work blockchains like BTC not all blockchains work the same way ETH is POS which uses less energy

finally someone talking about the differences between cryptos and blockchain! unfortunately cryptos is using blockchain in a horrible way, but this new technology can be used in so many other ways! like for supply chains, thank you!

A structural property of blockchains is that it stores a massive amount of copies of the data. This storage-redundancy is unsustainable by design. In contrast to the energy issues of proof-of-work miners, the storage waste cannot be eliminated. The one breakthrough advantage of blockchains is that data can practically not be changed. It is achieved by three systems: blocks of data get a control digit (called hash), blocks are chained by hashing also the hash of the previous blocks, and a multitude of copies are spread to servers all around the world. Changing data would require (1) access to 50%+1 of the copies, (2) changing the hash of the block accordingly to the changes of data within the block, and (3) changing the hash of all consecutive blocks in the chain. The decentralisation and “unchangability” provide the discussed transparency: Instead of changing data, one can only add a neutralising new block of data that undoes the previous one, which is completely transparent. But is the high cost of storage resources really justified by this one application? Aren’t there any other technologies with the same tracing capability? Do we even have the resources to keep adding blockchains?

Storage capacity keep increasing by the year for decades now, I don't believe storage really would be a big deal in the long-run. The benefits of the technology would outweight the harms of ever increasing storage, also because those blockchains deal with more than just trustworthy supply chains.

Thank you for that one. Into Stores In an actually free world it goes.

I tell you this oil and gas today is more cleaner and efficient today than ever before amd thats because we have the technology today that we didn't have a real long time ago I'm not saying lets not protect the environment but instead of trying to shut down our energy resources lets invest in a all they above energy strategy and use all of the above energy technology and focus on keeping our emissions down and come up with ways to keep them down
