Join us on an exciting linguistic adventure in a vibrant Brazilian park, where we put the concept of mutual intelligibility to the test! This captivating video showcases regular Brazilians as they engage in a unique language challenge, delving into the fascinating world of Romance languages - French, Italian, and Romanian. Discover how speakers of Brazilian Portuguese navigate these languages without prior knowledge or formal study. This experiment is not just about language, but also about cultural connections and understanding. Watch as participants attempt to comprehend and communicate, revealing the surprising similarities and intriguing differences between these closely related languages. How well can they understand each other? Tune in to find out!
Mutual intelligibility refers to the extent to which speakers of two related languages can understand each other without prior knowledge or formal training in the other language.

Most of us brazilians don't have much contact with foreign languages apart from some music and films. We were (kind of) a country of immigrants but not anymore. Having some basic english is something from the youngest generations only.
@FOLIPE
@FOLIPE 3 месяца назад
Even when we were a "country of immigrants" it was only for a couple decades and in a small part of the country, even in the southern states the proportion of immigrants was not higher than 10% of the population at peak moments which were very short (by comparison in many European countries the national average is 15-20% nowadays and has been rising for decades).

So it was not hard for me too but not hearing but reading tasks in Italian, French & Romanian! I think it was quite easy for me 'cause I can read Italian a little, & I know English & Swedish (but in this case it has no use). I' d like to present me. I am tatar ethnically & I was bilingual since that period I'd begun speakin'. The thing is I was born in Russian speaking city named Moscow. So I can speak Russian as fluent as native Russians.

Interesting experiment. As a Brazilian guy who does not speak any of those languages, I can tell that I had a similar result to thoses people, although I understood the examples in French and in Italian a little bit faster than they did, I was surprise that I got right the French item (French is not intelligible to Portuguese speakers). The Romanian audio was the hardest one to undertand, just like them, I also thought that it was talking about one slipper and not a shoe.

The Italian speaker in the audio has a distinct southern accent mixing s/z and p/b and does not enunciate 'manubrio' and 'sella' (which almost sounds like Senna) correctly. In short, this makes it harder for foreign speakers. Using a standard accent would have made it easier. The word 'sellino' exists in Italian and it's closer to Portuguese 'selim'. On the other hand, I'm surprised the Brazilian woman could not recognize 'aria aperta' (ar aberto?).
