In this video, I am joined by leading sports dietitian, Renee McGregor, to discuss how & why my body composition has changed over the years following recovery from an eating disorder and voluntary RED-S [Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport]. We dive into the topic of why carbohydrates are so important, RED-S and its symptoms in both male & female athletes and why eating more can make you leaner. Renee also discusses the low carb, high fat diet in sport and dives into the science out there around it.
As a dietitian, Renee specialises in eating disorders, RED-S, the female athlete, and athlete health & performance.

As you all know this is a topic close to my heart and why I am able to be train & compete as a professional triathlete is largely down to this incredible woman and her wisdom, Renee McGregor. I hope you enjoy this video and of course, any questions just shout!

Thanks Simon. I just hope a little education and awareness can help female athletes, coaches, family etc. understand what is needed and is important to reach their potential in a healthy manner… As we both know sometimes it is more simple than it seems 🙏😉

Would love info on what to do when you’ve been so burnt out from training, underrating, emotional stress and experiencing chronic fatigue and other issues like digestion vision etc and not getting better for years. Is it just eating more carbs and calories and stopping training till everything heals?

Love this video thank you so much! I'm a distance runner in Aus with RED-S- I'm 21 and never had a period. I've stopped running for 3 years now and it's been SO HARD I just want to be able to train and compete and do what I love again :( I've been a bit bad and incorporated some running a few days a week because I'm so over it, I guess I'll just increase my carbs and pray for a period 🥲🥲🥲

Hi Marjolaine, great to hear from you and sorry to hear your still struggling with RED-S. Make sure to get some professional advice as getting your period back needs to be the priority to reduce long-term consequences. ❤️

This is awesome! I've met with Renee and have recovered my periods, and feel like I look much less like an athlete. Hearing this put so eloquently and clearly has really helped in trusting and understanding the process. Thank you for posting!

Wow! What a great video! Such interesting info from Renee! Thanks Eloise! Ive spend so much time trying to force my body to look and behave a certain way without much success. The explanation of trusting your body and giving it what it needs is totally eye opening for me because the times I listened to my body were the times I had some success 👌

Very interesting, as I become older I am also a bit concerned about insulin resistance and diabetes risk from high carb diets which has been shown in some athletes. Wonder if Renee has some expertise in that area as well.

I would not know, however those studies may be mainly done on men so be wary and have a look at all the details. Carbs are important for women’s hormones, as we age and if this changes I do not know.

This is great! I am no triathlete but I have dealt with hypothalamic amenorrhea most of my life from overtraining and underesting. I have recovered multiple times (and was at the same weight all 4 times I got a period back) and gotten pregnant each time so I have never have a fill year of periods. That was my big takeaway. I got my period back 3+ years after my third child last September and have been so frustrated at why my body has not started progressing again in performance and overall energy but I have only had 3 periods…and then hit a road block. I decided to improve my heart health and add cardio. I have not done cardio in years because I didn’t want to make it harder to maintain my weight. Anyways I have not had a period since I added cardio in January. 😩 So my question is this, is it a year of regular periods or just a year of having sporadic periods?

Thanks for your comment, I am not the best qualified to advise on this. I would suggest reaching out to a professional to make sure you get the correct advise and are fully healthy. Good luck with it and happy to help with anything else :)
