Have you looked into applying Vitamin C to loose skin? I've noticed significant tightening of skin when I topically applied vitamin c powder mixed with water via spray bottle after showers. Is there any science behind this having long term effects that "shrink" excess/loose skin?

Hi, am 52, squeezing 3 lemons daily and drinking them right away, and making a carrot, betterave and gi ger juice in the evening is making obvious effect in my skin in teems of tighness. HA and Vitamin c daily are adding to the optimal effect as well. Am fasting and eating proteins only from red meat, fish, eggs and all other natural sources of protein. Taking NAC, b complex, magnesium glyanite, and vitamin d, as well. Am feeling good from the inside out moving arounf lightly and sleeping well. My skin allover my body is tight like as if am 20 y/o. No alcohol and no smoking.

I actually use Vit c and hyaluronic acid everyday in my skincare (face)….I did lose 110 lbs as well. It took me a few years as I was working on my mental health after leaving the military. I worked out but not hard. 20 min of cardio gave the endorphins I needed to get through the day. Eventually I moved to circuit training with light weights as I have Rheumatoid arthritis. I now to dedicated strength training with my cardio throughout the week. My loose skin is really around my tummy. I had a little pouch after my daughter, caesarean section. I’m very happy with how my loose skin has corrected itself, but you can see my muscle. I’ve thought of a tummy tuck but I worked too hard for those abs to risk the muscle getting messed up. I bet he HA and Vit C do work because I did slow down on my skincare during my healing process. I noticed my neck was a little loose. Started right back and now my skin looks great again. Thanks for the info….Im 53 yrs.

@@carolmaplesden916 right now I’m trying the Original brand however in the past Neo Strata has been my Vit C of choice and I do enjoy hyaluronic acid from the original….I switched to it because it was easier to buy and my old fav indeed labs is no longer available where I live. I do use a high percentage….wrt the Vit C the Neo Strata is 2o% but the original is 23%. I feel the sting and it’s a lot more grainy and very greasy which I’m not opposed to but I would rather add my own oils (squalene, castor oil, etc) to my moisturizer. Hope this helps….I will say I did go without the HA in my skincare for about 2 months…..I seen the sag….I added back into my routine and witnessed the skin tightening. Hope this helps! ✌🏽

Hello Doc, Greetings from China! I'm very thankful for the RU-vid algorithm that led me to your videos. I binge watched many of your videos on weight loss and loose skin, and I appreciate your professional insights. I used to be obese, now 29 years old, 186 cm tall. Thirteen months ago, I had a sleeve gastrectomy, and in over a year, I went from 156 kg to 80 kg, currently stabilizing between 80 to 85 kg. Even before the surgery, I was aware of fasting and autophagy. I have been practicing intermittent fasting for the past year, starting from 16 hours and gradually extending to fasting for up to 15 days, most of the time I'm doing OMAD. I have witnessed the weight loss and skin tightening effects brought about by fasting. However, I still have a considerable amount of loose skin, causing a lack of confidence. I understand that I can't fully restore my skin to its tightest state, but I want to tighten it further through surgery since loose skin has been my biggest source of insecurity. Therefore, I have scheduled a skin removal surgery for my abdomen, chest, and inner thighs four months from now. However, after watching your videos, I feel there might be more I can do to tighten my skin, making me reconsider whether surgery is necessary. Yet, I am unsure of the final results and how long it might take to achieve the desired outcome. I hope you can provide some advice. I'd like to send some photos to you if possible. Thank you. Best wishes.

I consume large amounts of bone broth (that I make myself) as well as well as hydrolyzed collagen with peptides almost every day. I have seen amazing improvements in my skin. The only challenge is that my hair grows too fast. My hairdresser put everything into perspective when she said that only healthy people's hair grow fast, so it would be better to appreciate the fact. 😂 Making the bone broth is an investment in myself. It takes time and energy but it's well worth the effort. It's less expensive than the supplements so I combine both options to get the best from both worlds. After this video I'll add vitamin c as well.

@debygiannioti4271 8 месяцев назад
@@mikayylaa22 I use the slow cooker. I fill it up with bones and I put enough water to cover the bones. I usually do this in the evening and leave it until late the next morning. I'd say about 12-15 hours. I leave it out in a protected part of my balcony because I don't necessarily enjoy the smell while I'm sleeping.😉 Then I let it cool and separate the broth, the bones and the gelatinous parts. The bones I throw away. I put the bone broth in containers in the freezer because it takes me a few weeks to consume. The broth becomes very gelatinous after a few hours in the fridge, it's no longer liquid. The gelatinous parts (I don't know how they are called 😃) and the bone marrow also goes in the freezer and I add them to my meals in small quantities. I usually do this every 3 weeks more or less. Sometimes I get bored so I just use the collagen protein powder. But it seems to me that the bone broth is more effective so I always go back to it. I consume with Himalayan salt either on its own (like a tea) or in a vegetable soup. I also add turmeric or other spices.

I’m don’t use a sauna but I do hot yoga and sweat like crazy. The first time you do it, you sweat out some very strange stuff. It’s like a rough salt. After that you just sweat. What do you think about using adapalene or other topical retinoids? Theyre mostly used for acne but some studies show promising signs for aging and reducing wrinkles. I wonder if targeted application of adapalene on common problem areas (chest, stomach, hips, upper arms & thighs) twice a week or so would help at all. Also I have no idea whether microneedling/dermarollering has any basis in real science or if its in the same category as essential oils and homeopathy.

Hi, Thanks for your videos. Very enlightening. I am confused about timing. 1) exercising in a fasted state enhances autophagy 2) protein stops the autophagy cold 3) you fasted 36h but took the collagen in your morning coffee, I.e. exercising was likely done After that. How long after ? Therefore : what would be the best protocol for timing of collagen intake vs exercise and eating windows ? When is collagen used by the body ? At night ? Another one : have you used a vibration plate ? That increases blood/lymph flow on top of inducing muscle contractions and therefore building muscle. Do those effects impact skin elasticity ? I have one and I love it. The professional one at the gym goes at it really hard and I use it a lot for my exercises, on top of my own. They are both really helpful.

Dr. Frank, I recently lost about 54 lbs (10 to go to get to 160 with a BMI of 22.5) using intermittent fasting, quite a few 48 hour fasts and even a few 5 day fasts. 5 Day fasts are easy after you get through the first two days, BUT they may have contributed to some muscle loss so I will stick to 48 hour fasts from now on. I have some loose skin on my thighs from fat/muscle loss - my legs got pretty skinny. So, I started taking verisol collagen (2.5 grams per day) + tryptophan. I am now doing the Ketovore diet - beef, bacon, eggs, olive oil, lemons, garlic and some chicken and liver (yuck), and also doing weight resistance training 4 times per week. I have a few partially blocked coronary arteries (I am working on reversing that!). I read somewhere online (it might have been in a video) that atherosclerotic plaque is a combination of oxidized SMALL LDL particles, 'foam' cells, white blood cells and COLLAGEN. Do you have any information regarding the increased intake of collagen and the increased formation of atheromas? By the way, I can no longer find confirmation anywhere on the interwebs regarding collagen in atherosclerotic plaque. I can't remember where I read/saw it, so I'm not even sure if it IS a component of plaques. Hopefully, I imagined it! Instinctively, I feel that collagen would be healing to the endothelium, and not in any way, contributory to the formation of atheromas. Of course, I could be wrong. Anyway, I thought you would be the person to ask. Thanks for making this series. It made for a very productive use of my time. I learned a great deal. You did a great job in presenting the information in a logical, interesting and engaging program. Much appreciated. I'm going to spend some time in the next few days watching your other videos. You're an awesome dude. Well done on your weight loss. Subscribed, liked and notified!!! Thanks very much, 'little' fella.🙂

Extremely interesting but my concern is about oxalate absorption. In her book "Toxic Superfoods," Sally Norton warns that both vitamin C and collagen create more endogenous oxalates in the body. Perhaps one who is concerned about oxalates could do a lower dose of collagen along with fresh squeezed lemons to get the vitamin C while encouraging the breakdown of oxalates. Maybe this balance would work to get the benefits without the negative of accumulating more oxalates, for some of us. Thank you for another fascinating discussion!
@GrowGrayMatter
@GrowGrayMatter 8 месяцев назад
You bring up a great point. Sometimes we do have to prioritize our priorities, so to speak. If loos skin is a major concern, and you are at low risk of kidney stones, then you way want to ramp up the collagen consumption. But, if you have a history of kidney stones, or have a genetic condition that increase oxalate production, you may want to avoid collagen/vitamin C in any large amounts. It is true that collagen can lead to oxalate production because of the amino acid hydroxyproline that is in it. She is right there. But the only specific study that I saw on that topic was giving people 30 grams of gelatin. The best news for someone in your situation is that 2 of the studies I mentioned only used 2.5 grams of collagen peptides. That might be an effective dose that also can keep you flying under oxalates "radar". I would also err on the side of caution and consider consuming calcium and magnesium citrate to assist the process as well. But, as always, run these things past your doctor if you have any concerns.
@snowfleece
@snowfleece 8 месяцев назад
@@GrowGrayMatter , thank you so much for your reply. I'm ordering the Anthony's Collagen Peptide Powder and going to follow your suggestions to keep the dose closer to the study amount, take those supplements, and use the lemon for the C at the same time. I'm feeling like that's probably pretty safe, especially since I keep my oxalates low elsewhere. This seems like a liveable tradeoff for a high priority priority! :-) I really appreciate your insights!

I had to give up on my last 40 day fast because of some 'life' issue but made it to day 26. The only thing that stops me going for the full 40 days is if, for some reason, I need to expend a lot of energy. Early on I found that while fasting, if I had to do any physical labour, I would quickly wilt and felt weak, so I avoided it. If I forsaw a need to expend energy, I would quit my fast. This time around I am far more 'fat adapted' and my body is able to quickly turn fat into ketones, giving me far more energy reserves than I had at the start. As long as I fast correctly, as in, no cheating, I lose 0 muscle mass, I am sure of that 100%. I am currently on day 19/40. The only thing that would stop me now would be literally an act of God. Previous fasts I would break fasts with bone broth to increase collagen uptake, but this time around I am allowing myself to have 2 cups every 3 days to see the effects.

I have just been quoted £10,000 for abdominoplasty for March 2024. I'm undecided on whether to proceed as I want to keep going naturally. I'm currently using marine collagen tablets and bone broth - so we shall see how I progress. I have had what is generally considered massive weight loss. I have lost 205 lbs since Jan this year. (170 lbs.. down from 375). I think I may not be able to avoid the surgery route... but for now I'm going to keep going with oral collagen and keep looking at alternative options.

I have to add though... I have next to no cellulite or stretch marks despite the rapid lost. I have no joint pains despite hiking over 90 miles a week now. I also do pure keto and take ACV religeously daily.

Your story is amazing. You should be very proud. I have heard that the surgeries are costly, but I had no idea it was that much. But I shouldn't be surprised. I heard from someone who spent close to $50,000 on multiple surgeries (abdomen, arms, thighs) Let me know what you end up doing. The downside of being so good at losing weight is the increased risk that the skin can't bounce back. But keep trying!

Dear Dr. O'Neill, I have used many of the tactics you discussed in parts 1and 2, and my skin is still pretty saggy (being 70 years old may have something to do with it😉). I have seen RU-vids about using micro-needling, also called collagen induction therapy, which creates deliberate, controlled, micro-wounds? It is the same principle as fractional laser therapies, but available as an at-home treatment and therefore a tiny fraction of the cost of in-office treatments. It worked to help refresh my face, but to tighten loose body skin, I think I would need a more aggressive needle length (body skin is thicker than facial skin). My dermatologist favours energy treatments (radio frequency and laser), I would love to get your take on this therapy for loose skin. I value your opinion because I use oral ceramides (including HA), two scoops of collagen peptides daily, the Life Extension Omega 3 oil, vitamin C (both oral and topically applied) and have benefited greatly from those supplements.

I keep seeing the suggestion that we should not count the grams of protein from collagen towards our protein totals. However, we never eat only collagen. There are lots of normal everyday foods that contain tryptophan so why would we not include collagen protein towards our protein intake? When I take collagen it’s usually in a smoothie. When vegetarians eat beans and rice it’s considered a whole protein…. And I have seen several times that they do not have to be eaten in the same meal.
@GrowGrayMatter
@GrowGrayMatter 8 месяцев назад
I agree that you should count it as long as you are eating it alongside other protein sources. I don't see that as an issue at all. But I said you shouldn't count it if you are taking it alone without other protein-rich foods. This would only be an issue for someone who adds collagen to their coffee, for example, and then doesn't eat a protein containing meal for a few hours. If so, your body will try to stimulate muscle protein synthesis but it won't have all the building blocks that you need to build lean tissue.

Great questions. You can use the powder form, but you 1) need a scale that can accurately measure 200mg, and 2) it is tricky to use since it absorbs water instantly. The best option for most people would be in capsule form. BulkSupplements.com has 200 mg capsules, and Now Foods has 50 mg capsules. You will pay more for capsules, but it is worth it if you don't have a good scale and you don't want to fight the powder. I hope this helps :)

I will do a separate video on topical treatments for sure. Both of these can work in the topical form as well, but I prefer the inside out approach. The main reason is that these supplements can help everywhere rather than only the places where you apply it. I like topical treatments if you have small areas that are troublesome like the neck or a small area on your tummy. I am one of many afflicted with the Alpha gal allergy (allergic to mammalian meat). My question is, is Marine collagen as effective as Bovine collagen when it comes to all the advantages you mention in the clip? And do you know if any of the studies cited used Marine collagen? Thanks… great video!!
@GrowGrayMatter
@GrowGrayMatter 8 месяцев назад
I am sorry to hear about your allergy. This is a great question. The marine collagen research is very promising. I can't see any reason why it wouldn't be as effective. Some even argue that it could be slightly better absorbed. Marine collagen is rich in all of the key ingredients you would need (glycine, proline, hydroxyproline) and it forms the short peptides that I talked about in the video. The only negative is that the human trial data is lacking at this point. But I have zero reason to suspect that it wouldn't be just as promising. Just be sure to run this by your doctor to be extra safe. And make sure you look for products that are known to be pure. I would hate to see you have an issue if a product is contaminated with something you should avoid. I hope this helps.

Even children today have signs of artery disease. Fast foods and sugary drinks have long term consequences. There is an obesity epidemic today where over 60% of the population is overweight or obese. What is common today and "NORMAL" is not healthy. The average person today is not healthy and is taking medications. Heart attacks were once only common in people over 65. Today people in their 40 are having heart attacks. Add more plants and vegetables to your diet and less junk and overly processed foods

You are what you eat. Your diet impacts your health. Lower stress, reduce obesity and more exercise are key to a healthy life. Obesity in children and adults is rising across the world. Fast food and sugary drinks including fruit juices are contributing to the problem of poor health and obesity. Eat a healthy plant based diet and exercise regularly. Reduce or ELIMINATE cows milk, eggs, cheese and meat. Eat more salad greens, beans, fruit and vegetables. Eliminate fast food, snacks like cookies, cakes, chips, and sugary drinks and juices. Every adult and child should own a bicycle and ride it regularly. Regular exercise will help you sleep better. Yoga is a great stress reducer. Obesity is all too common today. Get off the couch. Get off the phone, ipad or video game. A variety of stretching and other exercises help with increased mobility. Ride to work, ride to school, ride for fun. Every city should be a bicycle city. Speak up for bicycles in your community

Very well said overall. Part of the mission of this channel is to get people to control the 4 pillars of their health (diet, exercise/activity, sleep, and stress). The only place we disagree is on the necessity for plant-based diets. A well-formulated plant based diet can be very healthy, but so can a well-formulated diet that has animal products. Animal products have more bioavailable nutrients (in the proper form for animals like humans) as well as higher quality sources of protein. The key is to find the right plan that works for you that you can stick with long enough to see results. I am happy that you have found what works well for you :)

I am following the following approach: I fast every day 24 hours (OMAD) with A keto friendly meal with high protein intake and I will add the supplements that you have mentioned. I workout 3 days and then one day rest then repeat. I have decided to do do at the end of every three weeks I do a 5 days water fast. I am currently at 72kg I would like to ask few questions: I bouth a collagen supplements that says it also contains elastic protein. is that good for me? or should I stick to a collagen supplement that is pure? Another question, if I eat 2800 to 3000 calories during the meals that I break my 24 hours fast, will that be to much calories that will prevent me from getting into Autophagy? Also I would like to mention that I have done a one time 96 hours fast and I noticed that my skin is getting itchy and getting red, is this a sign that Autophagy is working and is doing its job in eating the skin. I follow a RU-vid channel called A healthy alternative, they basically say that it's okay to do 72 fast one after the other until you loose the weight without any risk on my health. if that's the case then I would do a 5 days water fast every 2 weeks instead of 3 weeks to speed up the process. Thanks for your effert sir

Thanks for reaching out. I hope that your plan is working well for you :) 1. I do know that some collagen supplements also have elastin. I don't see it as an issues, but I haven't found any studies that it is absorbed intact (like collagen peptides) or that it stimulates elastin production. I will keep looking at talk about that in a future video if anything interesting pops up. 2. 2800-3000 calories would definitely be a lot to fit into one meal. Your body would have to metabolize all of that incoming fuel before you would be at a place where autophagy would ramp up. If you like consuming that much during your eating window, you may actually prefer to try an ADF plan rather than OMAD: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ebw63MmKDM0.html 3. I will have to look into that RU-vid channel. I would caution against doing too many longer fasts. The concern would be the potential loss of lean mass if you fast too aggressively. You want to find the perfect amount of fasting to lose fat (and promote autophagy) without losing lean mass. Here is an entire series of videos about how to do that. The last video in the series would be a good one for you to watch. It gives you all the signs to look for that you might be fasting too much or being too aggrssive: ru-vid.com/group/PL7zPcraYKbGD171OjtsEoE3OF3U97m4L1 I hope this helps. Keep me posted on your progress.

This is a good question. The key thing to look out for with supplements that break a fast is consuming supplements that have calories, protein, or sugar. Most multivitamins will no break a fast as long as they aren't gummies or something like that. But, I typically save them for my eating windows. This is mainly because some nutrient are absorbed much better of they are taken with a meal that has fat in it. This includes the fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. So I don't think my vitamin would break my fast, but it also wouldn't be as effective if I took it during my fasting window, As far as fish oil, I would actually wait and take it during your eating window as well. Fish oils are always best taken with a fatty meal because it increases absorption. Also, the omega 3's don't need to be consumed daily, so you would be fine just taking more on your eating days. Lastly, fish oils do have some fat and calories so they technically break a fast. That isn't a deal breaker for me, but I do think you would get more benefit by saving them for a fatty meal.

Hi I'm just wondering I'm like a quarter of the way in on my weight loss journey should I begin taking supplements now or wait until I get closer to my target weight.

Just be aware that too much collagen and HA can be hard on the kidneys. So be careful if you have issues

Aren't these studies short on subjects Doctor O'Neill? Logically wouldn't studies of thousands be more appropriate to add vitamins, peptides, etcetera to your diet?

Good question. Larger studies are always best, but they are pretty rare (because of cost) when it comes to diet and lifestyle related issues. Most diet or exercise studies have between 8-20 people in the "treatment" arm because they are shockingly expensive. This is why it is always important to look for reviews and meta-analyses. You can start to add the results of multiple smaller studies together. The 2 reviews I highlighted in this video had 805 and 1125 participants. Those are the best I could find :)

This is a great question. As far as I know, the nephrologist Dr. Jason Fung popularized this idea. I have heard him say it on multiple podcasts, and he wrote about it here: blog.thefastingmethod.com/how-much-protein-is-excessive/ I mentioned this article briefly in part 1 of this series. I love Dr. Fung, but I have never seen any convincing evidence that this is true. He supports the claim with anecdotes from his patients. I love anecdotes. But I have never heard him cite a study, and I have never found a study that shows that your body would spare lean mass like muscle while breaking down only loose skin proteins. I would absolutely love it if that were true, and I hope that it is, but I can't recommend that as a strategy until if/when a mountain of data emerges. We have to be extremely careful to protect our lean mass while fasting and losing weight. The lion's share of my content is centered around losing fat while holding on to every gram of muscle and functional lean mass that we can: ru-vid.com/group/PL7zPcraYKbGD171OjtsEoE3OF3U97m4L1 As far as short-form content, I 100% agree that I need to do it. I am just limited in how much time I have to spend at the moment. My faith, family, and work commitments always come first. I do have someone helping me build a website right now. Once that is done, I promise that I will get some shorter content out and see how people respond to it. I typically have extra time during the summer as well. Thank you so much for the kind words. I am so happy that my content resonates with you. It means the world to me. Part of the reason that I don't put out more content is the amount of time I spend crafting replies like this. I want to support the people that are in my community as much as I can. I would rather cast a deep net than a wide one :) Be blessed,
