I'm John Fish, and this video is a day in my life as a Harvard Computer Science student. I'm a sophomore at Harvard college that makes videos, video essays, and vlogs about my life. In this video, I talk about conflicting moral groups such as republicans and democrats and how, according to Joshua Greene in Moral Tribes, they can reconcile their differences for the greater good.
In April, I'm going to be vlogging my experience as a Harvard student. I'm doing this because I want to get better at making things. I'll be uploading three times a week for the month of April.

A few notes: 1) messed up the intro 2) growth books actually do make you hit puberty again but in the good way only 3) apparently my face pops up? Will investigate further but that was unintentional--see edit 4) will speed up the intros to 5-10s probably EDIT: so the face glitches do not appear at all on my computer and there's no reason they should based on the timeline (the b-roll clips are not overlayed on top of anything, they're the main elements). Not really sure what's going on here, but it seems to be a RU-vid thing. Anyone have any thoughts as to why this might be happening?

John Fish I experienced the face glitch watching the vid on my phone. Maybe it only occurs for mobile devices? Btw, I love your vlogs so far; not too short or long, and very entertaining and helpful at the same time!

I’ve seen other creators mention this in descriptions. It’s definitely a bug in RU-vid’s processing. (Also watching on mobile)

The youtube frame glitch has been happening for a few months now (as far as I can tell) and it's really annoying, but I don't think you can actually do anything about it.

I absolutely love your videos, John. I myself struggle with a lot of academic anxiety at a competitive college but videos like these remind me that life isn’t GPA and grades and school all the time 24/7. What’s more important and will help more in the long run is work ethic, good rest, faith, friendships, etc. keep it up and I hope Harvard continues to be a great experience for you, bro!

Life Progress - Health, Wealth, & Happiness I think right and wrong and sense and nonsense are the same thing. “Right” is just applied sense and wrong is just applied nonsense. If something is neither right wrong or in between, it is implied rather than applied and would be called philosophy. That’s my thought process about those terms anyway

Maanya Shukla I agree with you because that’s exactly what I just said. I said that “right” is just applied sense, meaning it is sense that is based on feelings and opinions, and subjective means based on feelings and opinions. And I said wrong is applied nonsense, meaning it is “not sense” or “doesn’t make sense” based on feelings and opinions.

Hmmm, I don't think morality is about making the maximum amount of people happy. And short term happiness doesn't equal long term happiness/meaning as we all know, so that's another problem.

I agree. And when it comes to abortion, what produces the "maximum amount of happiness" really depends on whether the happiness of a preborn child counts as well. If it doesn't, then abortion's fine. If it does, then abortion is perhaps the greatest destroyer of happiness. Objective truth is an important part of morality, not just happiness.

I haven't read the book, but i'll take a wild guess at what he means: How people feel about abortion depends on what time it is during the 9 month period, from fertilization to birth. At the 1 week mark of pregnancy, 85% of anti-abortion and 15% of pro-abortion members of a party are happy. At the 9 month mark, 0% of anti-abortion and .001% of pro-abortion members of a party are happy of killing the baby (there's always somebody). At the 4 month mark, 10% of anti-abortion are happy, 40% of pro-abortion are happy. There must be a middle ground, somewhere between the 2-3 month mark, where total happiness is at a peak 70% + 70% of population are happy.

John what are your essay writing strategies? Strategies I use include creating an outline, taking detailed notes on readings to refer back to, and writing the first thing that pops into my mind. My current problem is that the note taking bit takes a long time, and writing the first thing that pops into my mind makes it so that I usually have to go back and revise sentences or even portions of my essay. Appreciate any responses to this problem!

My only suggestion for the vlogs is to try and balance the audio levels. At some points I will have to turn it way up so that I can hear you speak and then the music will be extremely loud, besides that I am loving the vlogs!

I suggest you cut down your intros to 4-5 seconds max, because imo they get repetitive and slow down the narration... aside from that, inspiring content as always!

Hey John, how do you incorporate spontaneity into your growth book planning? I think the idea of your growth book is great, but as a college senior, I would say that some of my best memories of college so far have been spontaneous, last minute decisions to do something. By following a strict schedule, it may not allow you to experience these moments.

Idk I‘m not convinced by Moral Tribes: the title of the video really intrigued me and I was looking forward to the book review and you talking about this issue that I‘m quite passionate about. I guess I was kind of expecting a „golden answer“ to the problem, which is quite silly looking back. It made me be disappointed with the „Metamoral“ (if that‘s how you called it, can‘t remember), this „brilliant idea“ of just listening to what the majority of the tribe wants. You made it seem like a really clever and crazy idea (which it certainly was! Like 300 years ago), and I‘m just thinking that that‘s the whole point of democracy and no crazy new idea at all

@John Fish please make the transitioning clips shorter, them being long doesn't really add any qualitative value after a certain extent e.g 5 seconds.
