Can Cops Be Firefighters? 

Funny thing is that a family member of mine is a volunteer fireman, part-time police officer in two towns, and a part-time state prison guard. He had one call where he arrested an arsonist, helped put out the fire, and then handled him at the prison. Guy thought he had two twin brothers.

My dad was on patrol once and noticed a mobile home that was on fire. He pulled them over and put the fire out with an extinguisher, when the firefighters showed up they looked at him like "hey that's my job!"

The HAZMAT team always needs a couple vertical blue indicators for toxic gas monitoring... 😉

I don't know where I stand with this since I'm volunteer fire-police...so questioning my life choices right now

I am 18 and a volunteer fire fighter in Germany for six months (You can enter the fire dept. in the age of 7. We trained twice a month. This was mainly for fun and to get used to the work as a firemen but we also had competition with other 'youth firefighters' (I don't know if it can be said like that)) When I finish high school in April I want to became a police officer. It's really interesting to have the fire and police department together. We don't have that. In bigger cities the fire fighters change every shift between EMS/Ambulance and fire fighting. EMS Police and Fire belongs to what we call BOS (Behörden und Organisationen mit Sicherheitsaufgaben) But I really like that concept you have. Police officer in the US is my dream job. I imagine myself sitting in a Ford Crown Victoria 2002 Police Interceptor holding a radar gun and giving speeding tickets :D.

Been a volunteer fireman for almost six years. Got hired by my the County Sheriffs Dept. as a CO almost six months ago. Believe in miracles they do happen. Thanks Mike!

I had the choice of being a fire fighter or a Cop, I chose Cop because I did not like the idea of sleeping with a bunch of men on duty for 20 years...

people like firefighters more than cops because they dont pull you over in not your car, with not your pants on and arrest your or give you a ticket.

The word "officer" may come off as a little authoritarian to some people, Mike. What about "Public Safety Technician" - an even friendlier job title!

I carried a gun and badge for a year as a volunteer deputy. I fought fires for four years as a volunteer. I was a licensed EMT for over a year at my volunteer fire dept. I now get paid to dispatch them. Much love. Lol

As a Paramedic Firefighter, I kind of enjoy you constantly dogging us. It's just like real life with the cops where I work were all actually buddies but give each other crap

I was with a fire department in Colorado. We took a big city cop and he absolutely killed it. Highly motivated, sucked in knowledge like it was the oxygen he lived on. He changed my opinion forever.

I served as an airport firefighter in Sweden as a part of our conscription and I love the firefighter jokes! :D

The paid chief of our volunteer fire department is a full time K-9 patrolman for the same township. He shows up on scene and gives a size up and then hits hard from the yard if he's on duty.

Here in Brazil firefighters are part of the military, but like kind of because they are still payed by the state and not the by the Federal government. What is also interesting that here the police is also part of the military, they have military ranks and stuff. However the police is also payed by the state. So a soldier in the military should salute a firefighter Captain for example.

I'm a Firefighter for a volunteer fire department and my Captain is also a cop.

Pretty cool idea! I can imagine EMS would be happy as there are a lot of medics who don't have the ability or the desire to be a fireman but they are required to work as FFs for a year before they can be medics pretty much full time, and even then they still gotta be FFs with bunker gear in the ambulance and all the FF training. I worked as a private EMT and met lots of medics who just loved medicine but felt pushed out of our world due to expectations to drag hose. Whereas making police dual role makes just as much sense because you have to be in better physical shape to do that job than EMS.

We have a DPS here as well. They are actually who is in charge of issuing concealed weapons permits in Arizona.

Police officers are incredible people, so are Firemen. Hey, even the Ambulance folks are my heros. I have watched as you folks move towards the dangerous situations as others are running away and you just say it's your job. Well you are amazing and some people do really appreciate what you do for us!!

Oakland, CA. Fire Departments have one peace officer assigned to each engine company. The city was having problems with firefighters getting shot when responding to a certain type of house fire (meth lab burns). So, they deployed law enforcement assignments to engine companies. Now, in California some firefighters are becomming dually qualified for fire and PC 832 (Peace Officer Status). At present batallion chiefs are carrying consealed, however they are not allowing fire personnell to carry exposed as it would detract from the "Save the kitty and respond to chest pain" mantality that the public has of fire personnell.

I saw a volunteer the other night who looked like they were having a blue light party in their mini van. Sooo many lights that was backwashing into the van!

my grandpa wore uniforms in public service his whole working life. Marine in Korean War, State Guard member, Sheriff's deputy, reserve officer, volunteer firefighter, ACLS paramedic, he probably secretly drove a tow truck on the side so he could help people. Apparently, if you take the right classes and work for an overfunded but understaffed agency you can have all your 6 years old self's dream jobs.

My local department is a Public Safety in NC, they work the road and respond to small house or car fires.

Campbell pd does shifts on the fire line. They have to be both firefighters and cops. Makes it kinda of interesting when someone mouths off to a firefighter and doesn't realize they're a cop too.

I’ve worked with “fire police” in a small town in New York State at a car race that took place on closed public roads. It worked pretty well - traffic/crowd control AND able to help in case of a crash. It was also pretty cool when the cop gave us a thumbs up while tearassing through a stop sign (on the race course while he stopped cross traffic) 😊

My friend was removed from a burning building by a cop after he passed out front smoke inhalation. The fire department wasn't on the seen yet. The cop was a rookie we found out later.

In my town we have a bunch of fires and wrecks, our fire dept also handles medical, and we have a year round wildfire season. I know one of the suburbs nearby me keeps both the FD and PD in the same building.

In the AF theres a stereotype that fighter fighters don't do anything but work out and play video games all day. And if there is ever a fire and they respond they will come on scene with a pissed off SF cop with a fire extinguisher.

Awesome video! In my country, Brazil, firefighters are actually cops (military police officers, we have gendarmerie style police agencies)! For a person to become a firefighter, first they MUST be a cop and then take a specialization course to fight fires, so they can join the fire department after they graduate. Firefighters have full police powers even though they don't carry weapons while on duty. Cheers!

I live in Michigan and last Christmas I was in a fire and Berkeley Police Department and Huntington Woods Public Safety department what's first to the scene instead of waiting for firefighters the police officers actually went in and pulled my grandma out of the fire so I was surprised when you brought up Public Safety officers and firefighters in the same video from Michigan

Growing up my small hometown was all volunteer firefighters, and a good number of them were cops. So I’d say yes.

There's Police Dept EMS in NJ, specifically in Howell and Brick. Not sure how that works

Some Fire Marshals are also considered peace officers that are armed. They do have full arresting privileges.

It depends where you live.. in Argentina we have cops that actualy are firefighter and even the firetrucks says ''Police'' on the side... im not sure if they can arrest someone if they need to but they are trained to do so .. and they carry guns too and do 2 kind of training one as a police officer and the other one to be a firefighter... Also here some fire departament are only volunteers so they dont get paid but police/firefighters get the same revenue as normal police officer.

I have to say that I have friends that are both Cops and Firefighters! Nothing wrong with that but it is fun when we poke fun at each other!

Where i come from they have Fire Police. They work strictly for the fire dpt. but they handle traffic control and scene security etc. and they do carry guns as does the fire marshall.

Every brother and sister in the thin red line know that a police officer think we dont do anything at the station. Try doing what we do.
