I have a question outside of this context: I went to an interview today for naturalization I passed all the three portions of the test. And the officer on 50 questions portion of (YES OR NO) . He decide that I have to come back for another interview because I wasn’t able to give difference between communism and totalitarianism!

I love this. IMO you're right that there is no difference between communism and totalitarianism. Both of these two ideologies appear to be the same when put into practice in the real world. Mao's China and Stalin's USSR were both totalitarian societies. However, the person who did your interview was probably a commie themselves and they wanted the "theoretical view" of communism (the people own everything, there is no state/authority body overseeing things etc etc) which is NOT how communism has ever been practiced in reality. That's also why commies always say "true communism has never been tried" because that is (kinda) true, it has been tried but "real" communism is so far removed from what people consider normal or natural that we can never truly reach such a utopia. I would answer, "Communism is a utopian ideal where everything is controlled by the people and there is no real state. Totalitarianism is an authoritarian form of organizing society that is best described as top down control over everything" Maybe that would please him.
