The Character Sheet is back with more fantasy and TTRPG news, and today we are looking at the launch of Critical Role's new Audio Only podcast, The Re-Slayer's Take, to see if the format and the show are landing with Critical Role fans! So just WHAT is Re-Slayer's Take...and which Critical Role fans could find themselves latching on to the new show? And could the Audio only nature of the "Family Friendly" new exandrian actual play help it find an audience...or could it drive more established Critical Role fans away?
Find out how the newest Critical Role podcast could find it's audience, and if current Critters should consider giving the series a listen, as we break down exactly what to expect from the new audio only series...and just who it's really aimed at!

So what do you think? Are you interested in giving The Re-Slayer's Take a listen? Would you preferr it to be video instead? Let us know!

I mean, Worlds Beyond Number is basically the same thing, and that show is great. I haven't actually listened to ReSlayer's, but if the idea is using 5e as a narrative tool, rather than what it's focused for, and relying much more on the player's ability to roleplay, then mechanically, that's what WBN does, and I see no reason this show would be any less good. As to how successful it can be... on the one hand, people who are interested in WBN have had to go looking for it. Far as I know that show's been successful. Whereas this is on... probably the most popular D&D troupe's channel, so I cannot imagine it won't find an audience.

I listened to the first episode, and I think it works. They've removed basically all of the above-table discussion, which keeps the narrative in focus and the pacing quick. The sound effects are a nice addition that perfectly augments the theater-of-the-mind style play in use in audio-only presentation. The voice acting is good and definitely feels like it caters to the YA audience. I could see families listening to it and enjoying it together in the car.

Im a CR fan for the last 4 years. but i only watch CR content.....watched a couple episodes of Candella and ive watch the Daggerheart stuff. I know they are trying to expand their brand and i don't blame them. I just love the cast and 5E so thats what i mainly care about. I work so it hard enough to keep up with the main show let alone the multitude of other ones they have. I will always be a Critter!

We suspect there will be a fair number of existing fans who feel the same, but with the new cast and the new audience we'll have to see how much of that "family" crowd they can draw in!

Agree with the “unknown” of it being catered to an all-ages. It’s nice you included the statistics, I was literally thinking about how many teens nowadays listen to podcasts, and I have no idea lol. It is a little weird though since you said they don’t heavily explain D&D but it caters to a younger audience, and maybe newer people? I’d think they’d wanna explain the details so teens could feel more comfortable with it, but maybe they are strictly aiming at an audience that is already aware of D&D. I’ll give it a try later today on my commute and see if I like it, I do prefer dark humor, occasional dirty joke, and even heavy concepts in character arcs so idk if this will really intrigue me or anyone else, but I’m open to try. Personally with the recent campaign being a mess, I’ve been listening to other groups more. EDIT: nvm lol it’s behind their new paywall 😅 looks like i’ll wait i guess

I haven't signed up for Beacon and I'm not sure I will. As much as I love CR, I'm on a strict budget most months. I really don't understand what the "Re" part of Re-Slayers means. I can't figure out the play on words there. I know what The Slayer's Take is, it's just the Re part I don't get. But I LOVE audio fiction, so I'd listen to it for sure.

I believe, and this is just speculation, that when they're done with C3 they're going to switch to Daggerheart on their channel. Since they're currently in Beta for Daggerheart and trying to teach people how to play it as they create it, it wouldn't make sense to have it as this sort of podcast where they don't explain or have visuals. The visuals of the cards and maps, etc, are important for people to see.

I love podcasts and listen to them in the car all the time. This also isn’t the first actual play podcast that’s family-friendly. I think what they’re probably going for isn’t kid-centric but something that you can listen to and not worry about what your kids overhear. I’ll give it a shot.

Having listened to the 3 episodes on Beacon, I don't think their biggest risk is the all-ages rating, I think their biggest challenge is their choice to make it more audiodrama than actual play. I really enjoyed the characters and the way they interact with each other and the world of Exandria, it felt natural... However the rest feels extremely scripted or at least re-recorded for clarity and brevity. There's no interactions between the players beyond in-game RP and the narration by the players feels very bland and isolated, which sometimes feels like they're not improvising, they're reading a script. I'm not saying it was all scripted but I could see them using segments of actual play for the in-game segments and re-recording/re-writing the way the players present their actions. I quite enjoyed it and will keep listening but I definitely wasn't expecting it to be like this since they marketed it as an actual play show and not an audiodrama with some rolling and improv occasionally.
@robertbishop5440
@robertbishop5440 13 дней назад
This is the exact reaction I had. I was actually very excited to check out a new d&d game by critical role with some interesting new players/characters, but still in the world of Exandria. I mean we do get that in a way, but it REALLY feels scripted and honestly overproduced. The way they have the players describe or explain certain things sometimes sounds so dead pan that it takes me out of the story. It just doesn't have the heart and organic feeling I love when I watch or listen to d&d and I immediately knew it wasn't for me.
@miguel88888
@miguel88888 13 дней назад
@@robertbishop5440 Totally, I was super excited because this new cast has potential to be great and could definitely have some fun chemistry. Hell, we can see from the in-game segments (which mostly don't seem to have been re-recorded) that they mesh well together. I feel like the "raw" version with a production similar to WBN, instead of the overproduction we got, would have been an instant hit.

I just dont have soo much free time these days. But I hope this will get audience and be a hit without me... 0:31 I'll go ahead and translate TCS's shill-speak: This podcast doesn't involve any legitimate TTRPG or game, but still wants to take advantage of the TTRPG audience for their improv/radio drama hybrid. MIDST didn't garner enough of an audience to make them confident they can succeed at any programming that doesn't have at least a light "mist" of D&D steaming off its carcass.
