Thanks Dave for bringing Rory to those that are not familiar. Rory inspired me to play more than any other guitar player. No player better than him live!
Lee you must watch Rory live at Montruex and his Rockpalast performances from the 70's all on RU-vid I believe. Rory wasn't only the greatest guitar player for me, he was also a legend as a human being. Still greatly loved and missed 😊 Loved this with Dave more than I can say.
Well I mean I’m a much much bigger Rory fan than Mayer. Rory is my second favorite guitarist of all time. Paul Kossoff being my number one. But to be fair John Mayer is extremely different, so I’d never think of comparing them.
I don't think id really say he was underrated, maybe overlooked. But I get what you're saying, he isnt really mentioned much. Man he was fantastic on stage. Acoustic and electric, slide whatever. Just phenomenal
My dad saw Gallagher first at the redding festival in the early 70s where other bands like the sensational Alex Harvey band was playing & he saw Gallagher again probably about 73 at Guilford civic hall & my dad was about 2 meters away from him, my dad always says it was one of his favourite concerts.
Lee Anderton really needs to familiarise himself with Rory Gallagher. Nobody... but nobody can make a strat sound like he does. His live videos and albums are amazing. Everyone from Hendrix to Slash have been inspired by him. He makes other guitar players seem like slouches.
I think Dave does quite a good job. The straight into the VOX sound he gets before he uses the treble boost is, to my ears, very close to Rory's early 70s sound, when he was at his unadulterated best.
As a bm fan an bm gear owner they're not using right gear. No treble booster in the video, no ac30 either. People bang about may using the rangermaster but he doesn't use a rangermaster 🤣 he uses knight audio technologies strap boosters like the red 18 that was specially made for him. I use their treble booster plush an I highly recommend it.
Dave's a chameleon for sure..can emulate many styles w both technical styles and capturing tone to match...if course he's got the best in the business at spinning the knobs to find the tones in the Captain! Great work man 😁🎸
I think this happens when you learn a lot from an artist. I think you have to learn 20+ songs to really have a chance at emulating/improvising in the style of someone. I've been doing this with a bunch of people, I havn't reached 20 yet, but the more songs I learn the more convincing it gets.
Agree except with Lee dialing in sounds, Lee dials in almost exclusively bad sounds. Dave is a master at dialing in sounds, he should be doing it all, that is the real downside of these videos. There has been at least one video where Dave wanted to change something and Lee put it back, that isn't supposed to be the point of the video.
I discovered Rory Gallagher about 10 years ago. I dove both feet in his music. He's a huge inspiration for me as a guitar player. The man was a master at what he did an amazing musician.
I’ve been waiting years for anyone just to say his name. He is truly GOAT worthy, every guitarist I love always led me to Rory. I love road warriors, he died grinding it out for his live music.
Love Rory, he was the main reason I wanted to play guitar . I saw him many times live, a true inspiration to watch, a true giant in guitar history. He also loved to use Telecaster's for slide and at times a Marshall 50 watt Amp. Well done Dave and Lee .
YES! YES! YES! YES!!! At last a Rory did with Dave, heaven. Out of 7 to 8 years of watching Anderton's vids this is hands down my favourite. But Lee! WHAT!? you own a guitar shop, love strats and aren't familiar with Rory??????? Literally gobsmacked and slightly cross 😄😄😄 Thanks Dave, great rendition of Bad Penny. LONG LIVE RORY G!!!
Yeah,it’s one of life’s great mysteries how some prominent guitar dudes hadn’t heard of our Blessed Rory. Check out the Guitar Historian channel. Extremely knowledgeable yet admitted he hadn’t heard (of) Rory Gallagher. His Rory Gallagher episode is priceless. Accidentally hears Rory on AOR car radio. “I died.”
Greetings Lee and Dave, firstly you make a great team, good connection. Now the biggy, I was fortunate to see Rory on many occasions in the 70's and early 80's, Dave's understanding of the nuances of Rory's tone is spooky, Lee, may I suggest have a good listen and watch his stuff, a eye opener. I could share a few storys of his licks and tricks he did live. Keep it going you two.
I just want to take a minute to thank the Anderton's youtube team for the production quality of their videos. The sound and image quality, the over head cameras for the pedals, the editing, etc.. There is just nothing quite like it on youtube for music content. Merci!!!
Firstly, Lee, you need to listen to lots of Rory Gallagher. I can't believe you haven't already. Try Irish Tour '74, and Tattoo. Listen to Million Miles Away live from Irish Tour. Secondly, you nailed the Rory tone with the very first treble boost, the Ibenez one, and after that it drifted away from any Rory sound I have in my record collection, in my opinion. Vox & Ibenez Booster, and that was it. I love the idea that Rory's corrosive sweat was due to the alcohol content. Made me laugh. God bless him. God bless Dave too - one of my favourite people on the planet.
Great job from Dave as always. Now could someone get the Captain a copy of Tattoo, Blueprint, Calling Card or Against the Grain? Then throw in Irish Tour ‘74 or Live In Europe?
Oooh you guys actually did Rory Gallagher! 🙏🙏🙏😭🥳 too cool, too cool!! Selfishly hoping for a Paul Kossoff one also (I know he didn’t use many pedals but he had a very unique way of using wah in the couple of examples “The Worm” and “I’ll Be Creepin” and his use of leslie speakers is so unique to this day) but this is already like Christmas 🎄
Dave is such a humble regular guy while being a total badass on the guitar. Love this run of videos Lee and Dave are doing as they are both interesting and fun to watch.
Like Mr Captain, I'm clueless about him. Only know Bad Penny from Dave covering it. Some of the other riffs he was playing in this vid sounded great tho.
@@martinemesguitar his live in Ireland and Europe albums are the best place to start. incredible performer. his live in Montreaux is a great watch also
Thanks. Rory was magic. His music never ages. Legendary marathon live shows. (Rory wasn't an alcoholic fyi). Many have tried, but no-one can, replicate Rory's sound. Live, he just blew the roof off. He was unique. Been a Rory follower since 1969, his music is just as relevant today. 👍
Thanks Dave and Lee.Rory inspired and still inspires as a guitarist and as a human being.Gone way before his time.Players like Rory and Albert Lee managed to keep their heads out of their arses, despite being guitar Royalty they remained so humble, down to earth and approachable,a quality that Dave possesses also. The Captain made a great move by bringing Dave on board.
Man, that made me emotional. I was asking for a video like that for years, since the sound like series was happening (which was so flippin cool vids, i wish they could bring this format an vibe back). Rory was my first guitar hero, he was a beast, left it all out there, every time I listen to him playing or singing there is so much emotion transfered to me. Last note, its a common misconception that a boost with a lot of treble is equal to a treble booster. A treble booster is a unique circuit that does it own thing and really shines in front of an overdriven tube amp so I dont think its possible to replicate it with a simple boost
That's totally right. A treble booster actually mainly boost mid frequencies, while tightening the bass. It gives a really singing tone (of course, Brian May is often telling how he got his singing tone directly from Rory Gallagher).
Oh dear, The Captain never listened to Rory, what a heathen lol. Hendrix was late going on at The Isle Of White because Rory was supposed to do a short set, but Jimi suggested they carry on he dug it so much. Rory's band ended up playing for an hour and 12 mins. Hendrix was interviewed on Carson's Tonight Show, when asked what it was like being the greatest guitar player in the world, Jimi said, "Ask Rory Gallagher". He was a massive influence to Jimi, Slash, Bonamassa, and we'd never have had Brian May, Queen may never have existed without Brian's sound.
For those of you who are interested the wonderful Flynn amplification in Glasgow make the authorised Hawk booster. An exact as possible copy of RGs booster. Not cheap but not outrageously expensive.
My friends and my guitar hero after seeing him perform in the early 70 s while in high school , then every time he was in the greater Los Angeles area through the years. We never could figure out why he wasn't huge but , it made for some memorable gigs in small places like the Starwood ( a local night club) when he should have been playing in large concert halls.
Strat, cranked AC-30, Dallas Rangemaster. That’s the meat and potatoes. I’ve seen a pic of one of his his pedalboards -MXR DynaComp, Boss Flanger, Tube-screamer, Boss OC-2. But I read he uses pedals mostly in studio.
Love Rory and was lucky to see him in Brighton way back 🙂. Dave is amazing and so likable.. Andertons and the captain are brilliant (I went there last week and bought the most expensive guitar I ever have 😬😁) thanks to Paul as well..
Absolutely superb! Not only is Dave a great player he has a real ear for getting it right . Rory gave everything in his shows , new strings every gig ! Thanks to Andertons for a great video !
This is one of the many videos i was really hoping we'd get a sound like for before the sound like series vanished out of the blue, and this was alright i still hope for a sound like of Rory Gallagher though
I had a non-master volume AC30 Top Boost in 1980. It was the loudest thing I've ever heard in my life. I only turned it up full once and nearly blew the street away. Nuclear deterrent capability.
Great demo. I saw Rory a few times in the 70's and the only nit-pick I can make, Dave, is that without all the energy he brought to his performance, you'll not get his attack. Funny how the '61 that Fender thought made them look bad invented the distressed look that's made them so much, subsequently. One thing only Rory did, as far as I'm aware, was pull/rip his d string out over the body a good 2 inches - I tried it but it's bloody difficult and sounded crap, unlike when he does it. For the unique tone of Vox, the clue is in the AC- a sort of folded back return wiring in the pre-amp, while everyone else goes direct as a clean clear signal is paramount.
Lee, you need to listen to some Rory. He was the reason I started playing guitar and an absolute legend. Irish tour ‘74 is my recommendation to start🤟🤟
Cap is so unfamiliar with Rory that he can't even say the name right. Dave obviously can. Repeat after me: Galla-her (the Irish way, silent second "g"), not Galla-ger (the Scottish way). Jeezzzz......Ooops, continued watching, Dave can't say it right either..
@@Novotny72 it’s not a lack of respect lmao do you pronounce words and names the same as every other English speaker? rly? go ahead and google Gallagher pronunciation in British and American for me. also, I’m aware Irish typically pronounce “th” with a “t” sound, so according to ur own logic I hope you pronounce the “th” sound in names if you think it’s disrespectful to pronounce names wrong.
I read an interview with Jimi one time they asked him how it felt to be the best guitar player in the world? Jimi replied "I dunno..Go ask Rory Gallagher!! 🤣 Lee really needs to familiarize himself with Rory!! I was hugely surprised Lee wasn't familiar with Rory!!🤯
Dave is incredible the way he covers so many artists so well. I was lucky enough to see Rory live a couple of times and he was truly special and incredible.
Donal, Rory’s brother, said that Rory had a rare blood type that had a high acidic level. His sweat as a result was more acidic than normal and the end result was the finish on his strat that we all love. Look back at the very early pictures and you will see that the process was well and truly underway. I think it’s bang out of order to suggest that his drinking was so heavy, even back then that it did that amount of damage to his guitar. It was only later in life that his drinking became a problem and a contributing factor to his early death. And by the way, the g is silent in Gallagher. I had a chat with Dave about that and like the true fan that he is, he took it on board. Good man Dave, legend. Great channel, great content, keep it coming.
I don't often comment on anything but this was fantastic, I love the content that Andertons produces and the same for Dave Simpson what he gets out of the least amount of gear is truly amazing. My old man talks about Rory Gallagher and I have gone back and listened over the years and he is a real guitar hero who needs more love.
I love Dave's anecdote about Fender being so embarrassed at Rory Gallagher playing his old battered denuded Strat that they offered him a new one. Who would have thought that 30-40 years later Fender's Custom Shop would be charging premium prices for guitars which are conditioned to look like Rory's? My conclusion is there must be thousands of retired doctors, lawyers, accountants... out there, on good pensions, who like to fantasise that instead of spending a lifetime in a sober profession, they spent 40 wilder and more "tasteful" years as a hard-working blues rock guitarist "On the Boards". Hats off to Dave for always choosing affordable guitars to do these demos.
one thing gave me great relief - Dave pronounced the name "GallaHer" and the Captain "GallaGer" so even English blokes seem to have a different understanding about this....
You really need a checked lumberjack shirt that starts off dry and ends up soaking wet through about 2 hours later if you want to sound like Rory Gallagher. I was lucky enough to see him play twice in Belfast during the mid seventies, and again in Leeds a couple of years later. He was the only major artist who would play there during those troubled times and the young people of Belfast loved him for that. I seem to remember him playing a white Telecaster, which might be the Esquire Dave mentioned and some kind of Fender Tweed amp, maybe a Twin or Bassman. Great to see Dave and Andertons recreating his sound.
Dave pronounces Gallagher correctly (in the intro at least) but Lee's pronunciation is like everyone else outside of Ireland. As he's Irish the second g in Gallagher is silent.
I assume the proper Irish pronunciation also means a more fricative h sound - or at least did originally - the choice to spell with 'gh' rather than merely h in the first place, suggests a similar sound to what 'bright' and 'wight' used to sound like in older periods of English, a throatier h sound.
@@meadish Usually people don't choose how the spell their last name. Gh sounds in the Irish language are pronounced exactly how you would pronounce Gallagher correctly as an Irish person.
I can't believe that you don't have any MXR pedals in the mix. They were a major pedal back in the 70's along with Boss and Electro Harmonix?? It's 👍 great to see Dave on the show!!!
I thought the replacement neck was a mighty mite. Read that in an interview with him when he promoted the 'Defender' album, if i remember correctly. But the original neck had dried at that point and was put back on the guitar.
As a rory Fan myself it's all about the right Real treble booster. There are some around where you can decide how much bottom is left in... Those overdrives didnt Sound rory. I actually liked a setup that goes treble booster into big Muff overdrive (not the PI) . That does rory frusciante etc and many more.
Since these were pre-Pringles days I adjust my comment on the previous Dave vid to “To be fair, Dave could sound like Rory with an old Ford Cortina and one of those tubs of seafood they used to sell from baskets in pubs.” Also, I am so jealous of those who haven’t listened to much Rory… Dudes, you have such a treat ahead! Oooooh yesssss! Irish Tour 74 isn’t a bad place to start. Xxx
i think the unique thing about voxes that dave talked about has something to do with their negative feedback loop or the abscense of such a loop. can someone with technical knowledge confirm?
Yeah, basically at the time when these amps were designed (1950's) distortion was seen as a fault, an unwanted effect. Hence, guitar amps, and pretty much any amp be it for an instrument or a radio, were designed to be as distortion free as possible, that's were hi-fi comes from. To achieve the hi-fi nature amps had this extension to their circuit called the "negative feedback loop", which would take out certain parts of the signal and add it back to a different part of the electical wave, somehow removing distortion. (I have no clue how) Eg. Fender did it, that's why their amps are seen as generally very clean. Now, the guy who designed Voxes, for various reasons, desided to remove the negative feedback circut thus making the amp a bit less hi-fi and a bit brighter. *I think these are the effects* It also alowed Voxes get a specific kind if distortion when cranked. Brian May touched upon this in a Vox documentary. Aparently Vox amps (or the AC30 at least) are actually class A/B, which maybe relates. I don't have the tech knowledge to give a detailed lecture on this but this is what I have learned about Vox amps.
I think that the design of the preamp has a bit to do with it. My V125s have negative feedback and four EL34s, but do a decent simulation of a Vox as near as I can tell. The ersatz Conqueror has a Vox thing going as well. Engineering choices, I think.
It didn't sound anything like Rory Gallagher, and his Strat only had a three-way switch, so the second position used in this video could never sound like Rory, and I've seen him live, and it didn't sound like that.
Yes Lee you should always do your research on players you sound recreate. Dave is a genius player but should have used a Squier Strat as a true tribute. Do your research listen to Calling Card, Top Priority and watch his Montreux Jazz festival gigs . Brian May was not wrong.
It's great to see Rory being highlighted in this vid. He's one of the greatest ever, but so often overlooked. Check out "Bought and Sold" or "Cruise on Out". He was one of the original rock gods. Recognised by all his peers, including Hendrix, but seems to only be noted in Ireland now.
