Can DJI Spark Do Cinematic Video Footage?

Hi guys, in this video I take a look at the DJI Spark and whether it's capable to film cinematic video footage.
I've filmed various clips in different scenarios to give the best possible result, some of it was filmed just using the iPhone as the controller and some with the remote control. Note: I'm not using any ND filters.
This is not a paid advertisement for DJI Spark...but it is awesome and you should get one now! :)
I should add that in post production I added a few extra cinematic tweaks:
1) Top and Bottom letterbox effect created in photoshop as an image and overlayed on the footage
2) Adjusted brightness, contrast and exposure to the footage
3) Boosted saturation and reduced colour profile so slightly cooler
4) Edited to a sick soundtrack

AWESOME!..Totally underestimated by most quote on quote professionals. Who cares, this little guy is a keeper. Easy to travel, easy to launch. In and out before anyone takes notice. And it fits anywhere. Thanks for proving that, when in capable hands the sky is the limit:)

Nice stuff. Proof that when properly graded, 1080p/30fps can still look perfectly good. At 1:55 and again at 2:49, you realize some of the limitations of the 2-axis gimbal, but the rising and drifting shots look stellar.

OakParkStudios Thanks man. Yes the 2-axis can have some minor issues on the spiral mode, though I was using the phone to control those shots from a distance so could be signal too. I need to try some of the auto features with the remote more.

no way?! we went there last year and the year before - stayed in Salò. It's amazing. Make sure you rent a speedboat for the day and take the Spark to the north-west of the lakeshore...incredible cliffs, and 1000ft of clear water to swim in

Wow 👍🏻 I have a Phantom 3 which I take on all my adventures but it's such a pain to carry. I'm going to add the spark and controller package to my arsenal as it's half the price of the mavic and I can carry it easily ........ nice review

got one like it the only downside is the 30fps limit and the battery life but all in all the best beginner drone out there for starters :) you just have to make a good post production :) loved the video and the shots :)

ikushy facts. Which is kind of fucked up. I get it’s a beginner drone but that should be no reason not for them to add 24fps and 60fps. But this is perfect size very mobile. Etc.

I had p3s as my first n cheap drone a year ago. Was very happy with drone n specially 2.7k video. But soon realised can't take him anywhere with me. It too big carry woth you all the time. Now i got little guy spark always stays in my car very happy woth it.

Nice video! I would say that it's great for cinematic footage. Got one myself :) I'm curious: - At 2:55 and in general, did you use ND-filters for the camera? - On some of the footage, especially on 1:05 and 1:08, it really looks like there's some sort of fading in depth enhancement, or however that is explained. Did you do anything special? - Also, the cinematic format (the black bars in the top and bottom): Was that something you edited in afterwards, or what setting did you use on the drone? Thanks a lot!

Hey thanks. In answer to your questions: 1: no ND filters were used (though I have just bought some & will be doing a review vid) 2: It's a vertigo/ dolly zoom effect. By zooming in or out in post whilst the frame is moving - adds a perspective. 3: Yes the black bars were added in post. Just created a transparent graphic in photoshop and overplayed the clip. Yea...the remote. Mercalli is also good investment just as an insurance policy on the footage, albeit expensive.

Perhaps a silly question - but some of the Spark footage in this video seems to be very clearly displayed at 60fps, even though the camera only supports up to 30fps. How is this achieved?

Leon Botha maybe you need to install SD card in the spark, use it during during flight and import the original video from spark

@@nathelevate Lots of other vids covering that but if it was me I’d be leaning to the air for the extra manual controls and obstacle avoidance. However if it’s just pure image quality you can’t got wrong with the mini. The challenge is for not much more than the air and you’re in Mavic Pro territory. Considerations are portability, usability and budget.

Great film dude. Only one comment. Never have the drone near your face when switched on. I have seen this on hundreds of videos since I am trying to convince myself to buy one but sick of the constant updates and issues. 700 smackers is not cheap on what appears to be a gamble. Same with the Mavic & that is double. Who is taking the bisquit here. I think the Chinese are having a laugh.

John Hodges Thanks man. Good tip, battery was dead so wouldn't fly anyway. For an entry level drone I think it's great because of the discreetness & quality, but I guess I'm biased. I've not had any issues other than when using the phone where signal is via wifi.

some video looks jerky - I noticed this when I imported video I shot on my Spark into iMovie - I searched and another flyer suggested trimming the video a bit (needs to be the start) before dropping on the time line - it fixes it (or use another tool to trim it before importing to iMovie) - nice job overall though

how do you trim it? you mean cut out the beginning in an editing program then render out then import into imovie?

I use ImTOO Video Cutter 2 - but you are supposed to also be able to edit the clip in iMovie (start point) before you drop it on the timeline

Clearly the Spark is plenty good enough to produce youtube quality footage. The only shortfall you can obviously see is in the dynamic range. But I wonder if even P4P can do better..
