This week on Knock Knock Eye, Will brings on guest Maureen Johnson, the author of the popular book series, Truly Devious, who talks about how she is responsible for the Jonathan Prayer candles, before she gets into some smaller eye issues, but more importantly the main topic for the day, Acute macular Neuro retinopathy. which is also her bigger eye issue that Will discusses today. Maureen explains her systems and Will diagnoses her in the episode and gives her more information on her condition.

I love the technical content of your characters. I worked a large hospital's IT for 10 years in the 80's. Our team wrote customized applications for different departments. We shadowed them for weeks to understand the flow and technicalities of their jobs. Each of the professions are so unique. I was working in the lab one time and all the techs were excitedly queued up in a line to see a Chinese liver fluke.

As an engineer who grew up around doctors and nurse's, I think your stuff is hilarious.. in the same way the big bang theory is funny to non engineers. Or office space is funny to non programmers.

I'm not a medical person, but I have to deal with medicine a lot in a somewhat second-hand manner, so I understand a lot of inner workings of hospitals and stuff, but I also learn all this eye stuff, which is fascinating

Maureen Johnson is a treasure. At the vets, every pen cup has a haemostat. They aren't used for haemostasis because 1- that would be unhygienic, and 2- we rarely have arterial bleeds by the photocopier

This is fascinating! I was first diagnosed with AMN OU (OS>OD) in 2015 around the time I had influenza. I see it on occasion -most recently in July I think. For me, it mostly happens when my body is going through some sort of illness/infection. When I do see the scotomas, I like to describe it as the Walmart logo because it's petaloid in shape.

You should do an episode on retinitis pigmentosa and invite Andrew Leland (The Country of the Blind; A Memoir at the End of Sight) as your guest. I've watched or listened to podcasts and videos of him and he has a good sense of humor, particularly on podcasts where he feels he can cut loose a bit.

I used to have CSR... Would drink coffee a lot with espresso shots ... A lot of coffee has elevated nickel content, so if you have allergy, that could exacerbate things, but also BP and GERD or GI ulcers... There's a correlation between helicobacter pylori and eye problems. I was treated with antibiotics in Korea, but they also gave me what looked like large doses of Betacarotine, which your body converts to retinol... Ramping smaller dosages over time has helped any time I notice slight CSR rings.

in some ways this happened to me (eye explosion). i waited 3 years to play the last sim city game because when it released there was so much drama and issues with the game so i figured id wait out the bugs and wait till the price wasnt stupid. when i finnaly bought the game i played in no joke 3 days straight with no sleep by the end of it my eyes were super bloodshot i guess from the staring at the buildings for soon XD. i only found out at the end of the game binge that my mom saw my eyes and freaked out. it was funny i think i just took some eyedrops and once i woke up it had mostly gone away

I have several friends who are doctors & nurses who talk about things that happen in the hospital, and my mother had a lot of different health problems & I went with her to all of her appointments & procedures, and I have a lot of medical problems myself. And I look everything up. At this point I feel like I practically went to med school. I love your videos. The only time I left a doctor's office totally disgusted & doubting my doctor's competence was the day I got a Covid booster. I said, "Doesn't it make you crazy when people refuse to get the vaccine?" She said, "It's all Biden & Harris's fault."

Well CLEARLY Joe Biden should have responded better to Covid early on in 2020. Just like Obama didn’t do anything to stop Katrina or the recession. I’m sure if a Republican was in office things would have gone differently.

@@duckbuster1572Joe Biden wasn't president in 2020. He was however following & promoting CDC guidelines such as wearing masks, keeping a distance from other people & unlike Trump, who was president, Biden didn't promote drinking bleach as a cure for COVID.

Loved this video, but as someone in my 30's who regularly consumes like 200-400mg of caffeine, I'm *very* curious how many mg of caffeine she had. 😅 17:09: She said 6 cups of coffee, a "cup" is a terribly random system of measurement in the US where the imperial measurement means 8 fl oz, but coffee machines usually advertise using the metric (roughly 5 fl oz). However most people aren't talking about an official measurement of fl oz, they're talking about how many mugs of coffee they had. A typical household mug in the US is like 9 fl oz, but could be much larger. If she went to Starbucks the most common sized coffees would be 12 to 16 fl oz, but that's assuming she wouldn't go with the large sizes and didn't get espresso based drink and called it coffee like most people at Starbucks will. Long story short, 6 cups of fresh ground non-decaf coffee *could have between 300mg of caffeine (6x5 fl oz) all the way up to 960mg of caffeine (6x16 fl oz)* if we assume a standard caffeine content of 10mg per 1 fl oz which is a pretty good average for fresh ground coffee. Apparently instant coffee varies a little too wildly to really do estimations with. 😅

Although I work in a totally different field due to chronic procrastination, my background is health aligned. So I understand most of your content. That must be a New York thing, because my retinalogist’s waiting room is always empty and everything is chill. He says that most of the patients have the same problem as me, which is PVD. So it seems like in his case, most cases are easy.

Reoccurring, transitory, temporary, monocular blindness (or at least up to 70% darkening of nearly entire visual field of one eye) that is painless and spontaneously resolves with 24 hours. How often is it from Ehler-danlos Syndrome vs. a painless occular migrain vs. a conversion disorder vs. other causes? Could it be from a normal amount of coffee? Nothing showed up on any tests or images including missing but it wasn't happening by the time I was tested.
