Eastern medicine is finally making inroads as a primary option for medical treatment in the western world. Can they co-exist? Dr. Mary Devereaux answers some important questions regarding both medicinal approaches.
Western medicine refers to a system in which medical doctors and other health care professionals identify and treat symptoms and diseases using:
• drugs (poison),
• radiation (burning),
• or surgery (cutting).
This is referred to as allopathic medicine or "conventional" medicine. The history of Western medicine stretches back thousands of years to the ancient Greeks. Hippocrates is often credited as the Father of Western Medicine because of his scientific descriptions of many diseases and their treatments.
Eastern medicine, also known as Asian medicine or traditional Chinese medicine, is the oldest codified system of medicine in the world. It refers to a range of medical practices that originated throughout Asia.
Eastern medicine considers both patient’s symptoms and an individualized diagnosis of a patient’s Qi. Based on various diagnostic procedures, eastern diagnostics search for a complex pattern of disharmony or imbalance within the body to determine how to best proceed. The basic philosophy is to treat the whole person-encouraging a healthy body to prevent illness and speed recovery.
Dr. Devereaux believes Eastern medicine may be beneficial in treating conditions in combination with Western medicine. For example, acupuncture and massage can help treat back pain in tandem with routine medical treatment. Similarly, tuina can be useful in treating irritable bowel syndrome in combination with Western medicine. However, a person should always consult their doctor before considering any treatment option.
