This week Stuart from InCARnation brings out the new MG4 Xpower for me to have a go in on a twisty road to see if the electric future is all doom and gloom, or if there is still going to be a place for the old school car enthusiast.

Hey Jeff that was really fun. Thanks for sharing your time and preparing a video. I'm not trying to convert you or anyone else to EV but I'm glad you enjoyed the drive. Thanks again buddy. Hope you don't cop too much flak in the comments!👍👍👍

I'd like to see the electric 928 review by Jeff. This episode was surprisingly entertaining and somewhat informative, especially the mention of the range changing when driven spiritedly and also the $10 per 100km ish cost per 100km using commercial chargers. I've only been a passenger in a hybrid taxi that was pretty much silent, just that alone has some value especially in built up areas where there's speed humps slowing and accelerating with noise and fuel waste as you build up to the next one to repeat.

Harrys Garage recently did a review of the Lotus Eletre EV. You should read the comments section. Like the MG, the only way you know the brand is by the badge, otherwise its a generic SUV barge. The Eletre is so big they had to make the Lotus bonnet badge bigger to match. That says it all really.

The EV's do go well, but no engagement, engine noise, stirring the pot (gearchanges). And they are heavy, cornering will not compare to a sporty petrol car when close to the limit. Very interesting tho, and thanks to Stuart. Cheers

Electric cars are impressive in what they do if you have the charging available and working on any journey you are going on, The UK is lacking in this. At times i have to do quite long dashes and dont have the time yo sit waiting for batteries to charge, I also notice that watching Jeff driving Harry we hear the engine and gears being used and that adds to the thrill of car Vs twisty back roads. Nice car though.

Our Daily Grinder is EV, Skoda Enyaq 80x (AWD version of ID4 with less capacitive crap and bigger trunk). It makes life super easy as we drive quite lot and normally only need to use public chargers about 1-2 times a month. And with two small kids, we anyho need to take lots of stops. And in Finnish winter altough the range takes rather big hit, they are othervise very good and warm cars. But in our case fun isn't even same zip code, but we didn't really prioritize that. Saving about 5k/year on fuel + next to nothing costs as company car were bigger things. My gripe with Chinese cars are geopolitical. One does not have to be genious to see that things are heading in bad direction (new modern aircraft carriers rolling out every second year for next ten years or so) and personally I don't want to support such regime any more than I absolutely need to. Getting stuff from China cannot realistically be totally averted, but can be avoided where can. And people say "they anyho buy phones made there". One has to buy quite lot of stuff to equate one car. But this is of course my opinion, one needs to make his/her own decisions and live with those in the future.

Humm, interesting. I've had the opportunity to drive a Tesla Sport on a proper race track in the States. It had good track oriented tires. The car was surprisingly quick but could not complete a 20 minute session of hard driving on the track. The steering had no feel and the brakes were numb yet very effective. It was like driving an appliance. It had no sole. If one wants an EV, then go for it. I can see the appeal with comminuting in heavy traffic but I have no desire for one.

Hi Jeff, Love all you’re car builds. Long time viewer, first time commenting. To only give the MG a seven, that I don’t think is correct. I would be very interested to see Harry and the MG over the 1/4, Harry would be extremely disappointed. Having driven the MG and don’t forget it goes 0 to 100 klms in 3.8 sec, not bad….it’s a very quick machine. The only thing as like all electric cars is range, but performance it’s very much up there.
@inCARnationAustralia
@inCARnationAustralia 5 месяцев назад
You can see in the video I was surprised that Jeff gave it as much as a 9, then a 7. I totally understand that it's missing some key things that Harry provides - gearchanges, matching revs, exhaust noises, better steering and brake feel.

12 months ago I was very keen to go down the EV path, however the deeper I dug the less convinced I became that an EV was the right choice at this time, honest reviews like this reinforce that as a motoring enthusiast they still represent a significant compromise despite the impressive engineering and performance… and do they have to be so bland and ugly😊

And how much damage to the environment do the batteries produce in there manufacture
@AlexanderCraig-xl3di

Once the battery is made it's made, which isn't any worse than mining for petrol. But you have to mine and refine oil over and over again only to burn once.
@bigmac60
@bigmac60 5 месяцев назад
And also While the world does have enough lithium to power the electric vehicle revolution, it's less a question of quantity, and more a question of accessibility. Earth has approximately 88 million tonnes of lithium, but only one-quarter is economically viable to mine as reserves.

Honestly, I miss the sound, the shifter, the quick refueling,… I don’t believe in EV, we are still not ready for them in terms of recharging and range. I guess they will improve batteries, but we are still far away when compared to a fuel vehicle. And most important, I think we buy cars that we like, and then we look at performance. And this car is so ugly, so I would never buy it even if it had 1000kw and a “cheap” price.

By that you mean how long will the battery last? Despite 'assurances' from manufacturers, eight years is about the absolute best you can hope for (and most will have drastically reduced capacity by then), but that's for Teslas and other makes that are almost certainly much better engineered and made than anything from China. Five is probably nearer the mark, then you're looking at £$€ tens of thousands for a replacement (which for most people will mean scrapping the car or selling it for peanuts). BTW, the MG badge is nothing more than that, a badge, but a lot of people can't see past it - these are just generic Chinese EV's.
@johnn17golf
@johnn17golf 5 месяцев назад
How long will it last? Longer than any made-in-Britain MG! Most batteries will outlast most IC engines. There are thousands of 500k batteries with 90%+ capacity remaining... and they are the original tech ones. New bateries are better, as is their BMS. Repeating the corporate media spin on EVs only makes you appear like a gullible sup. Corporate MSM is not your friend, ER!

@@johnn17golf I have a friend who is Indian. As such he has friends who own taxis. They run hybrid Camrys and a few have Tesla Model Xs and they were telling me a yea ror so ago they had to sell a bunch of vars because state law says they can't have more than 1,000,000km on them. 980,000 from a hybrid Camry is pretty good. The Tesla's they sell at 500,000 though I was talking to a chauffeur here in Sydney who has a Model S with 650,000km on it. When I was 18 and buying and selling cars in the 90s, cars didn't last much past 200 000km. Diesels you could push to 300-350,000km but that was about it. And they say they don't much things like they used to? No. They're much better now!
