Paper and plastic bottles typically come to mind when we think about recycling, but they're only a fraction of our waste - TerraCycle wants to make our waste stream 100% recyclable.

Everyone knows that bottles and cans can be recycled, but what about everything else? Can you recycle old snack packages? Can you recycle contact lenses? Can you recycle gum? We're about to find out. One Small Step host Lucy Biggers is here to answer the question: can everything be recycled?
According to the EPA only about 34% of the waste stream in America gets recycled. One large part of the issue, aside from consumer behaviors, is that it takes a lot of time and energy for companies to clean and sort recyclable materials. That's where TerraCycle comes in.
TerraCycle is a company with a mission to make our waste stream 100% recyclable. Follow Lucy as she visits TerraCycle's headquarters ion New Jersey to find out the truth behind this question: is it possible to recycle everything?

Companies should be taxed more for producing products/packaging that is non recycleable. They’ll make their products more recycleable, and in the end discarded products and packaging will be a valuable resource. Like think of how you can trade in bottles for store credit, what if you could do the same with chips bags and milk bottles and shampoo bottles?

This is just the science part of the puzzle. They have demonstrated ways to recycle a lot of our waste. But, to do it on any scale requires the involvement of our government and, for at least right now, they don't care and won't make the effort. The recent problem with Taiwan returning huge shipments of recyclables to their sources is a good example of what's happening. We don't have the means to recycle what we collect already. The world isn't equipped politically to deal with recycling. So, do what you can. But don't expect anything large scale until we change a lot of politician's attitudes.

Just finished a Sustainability class for my Enviro SSE degree ...and you just beat me to my own comment on their Rob!! I dig your awareness, man✔️ Furthermore: people power DOES have a chance to catapult this also... At least more so than we have been.... We cannot lead with apathy much longer.

You totally miss the whole meaning behind this. It's like how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. And it is not the politicians attitude we need to change. It's the people that vote them in, that need to change their attitude. Let's stop taking a defeatist attitude. This person saw a need, and figure out a way to fill it, and make a profit at the same time. That is just brilliant!!!!
@solstice2318
@solstice2318 4 года назад
Some people are so naive.. If ever recycling even comes close to reducing the amount of new plastic (oil) produced they will shut it down before you can say jack Robinson. Those lobbies are your masters. You don't have a say. And you never will. Defeatist? There was no battle and there will never be any. The recycling concept is a hoax. Why do you think 3rd world countries refuse your "recyclables"? It's not feasible. Period. Keep dreaming while they take more money out of your guilt filled conscience.
@Robb403
@Robb403 4 года назад
@@solstice2318 WOW! Maybe you should seek out more scientific information and less conspiracy theory. We have already made advancements in spite of the coal lobbyists, the farm lobbyists and others. Right now, we are dealing with a huge mistake in the government. But, the shear audacity of this mess will likely wake people up and change the political structure for the next President. So, things could start moving forward again.

The traditional recycling system is designed to make us feel ok about consuming/making more plastic. Repurposing is really great, but to have a big environmental impact you’d have to reduce the amount of plastic on the earth. Plastic photo-decays and breaks down into smaller and smaller particles until it’s a powder. Micro plastics also come from washing our clothes, which contain synthetic materials. It’s all over the ocean, seeping into our food chain. Recycling is good, but it doesn’t entirely get to the source of the problem: the existence of decaying plastic due to consumption of plastic.

That big capsule coffee machine just behind just scream bs. The most efficient to tackle the garbage problem isn’t to send back our trash thousands of miles away through the post. It’s to reduce our trash in the first place! So buy a normal machine and put the coffee to the compost instead of using useless plastic and aluminum. This would be like driving a hummer and tell people to produce less co2.

look up a company called Back to the Roots, turns out certain kinds of mushrooms love growing in used coffee grounds and they use that to sell their diy mushroom growing kits. You get edible mushrooms, some coffee stays out of the landfill, and what's left at the end is a cardboard box you can recycle and what's essentially soil. the block of former coffee grounds and mycelium can be tossed harmlessly in your garden.

Yeah I'm finding some of their claims a little hard to believe as well, don't get me wrong I love recycling and I'm like the recycling police with my friends but i find it hard to believe it's more carbon efficient to ship these obscure items all around to recycle them than just to landfill it when NPR's planet money research showed that even common #1 and #2 plastics aren't carbon efficient to recycle now in American recycling plants now that China has stopped taking them.

We should also email companies that way we can petition them to change and affiliate with TerraCycle. I hate greedy corporations, but since you can't make them change into entities that care, you can make them change in the same way Amazon got $15/hr. The workers and Bernie Sanders got together to protest and demand it, which was costing them production and so they got it! Sure, Amazon will make dumb remarks like "our workers are living like Kings" but who gives what they care lol the consumer and the workers are the only reason they exist anyways lol

It’s surly a brilliant idea. But I am a little skeptical about the environmental cost involved in this recycling program. What amount of water resources or electricity do they need in order to recycle one unit of trash on average? It seems to me that there are only limited percentages of waste which can be recycled into high quality products like a bag pack and rest of them simply went into a new cycle of consumerism by inventing something we don’t necessarily need. I think only by tackling the issue of over-packing and getting rid off goods we don’t necessarily need can really make a difference.

Now we've seen the opportunities many of us would never have known could possibly exist in reality, picking up a phone or surfing the internet - for this reason now becomes less complicated, and less stressful. This guy is an inspiration. I'm also the same way. I'll be taking over a family business one day but if people don't have lawns anymore or have these annoying non eco friendly things called mulch and pine needles, I'll be happy to do something else. I actually hope though if people still have want these things that we move towards more eco friendly products. All the paint and artificial chemcials in these home improvement products is one of the main causes for small scale environmental products. For example, mulch. Unless the source you get it from is using biodegradable paint, it is most likely using the same type of stuff that goes into wall paint. Of course it's not too harmful once it's dried, but this stuff is literally outside getting wet all the time and getting washed away. Rubber mulch is a great alternative, but then again it is wasteful in the long run because it doesn't break down quickly if you decide to remove it. And if you use your own DIY stuff, it causes termites and all sorts of things. Luxuries and extra stuff always comes at a cost. It's frustrating that more people aren't informed. If it weren't for this, we would be SOOOO much more advanced in time than we are now. Too bad lots of people are personally greedy and only care about what they want instead of things that work for a better future for everyone.

Yes, but the same is for any recycling project regardless of material. After re-processing so many times the material does become useless. 1. It's pretty clear this is more than just a profitable business for them. 2. Individuals do not have to pay for their waste removal, if you sign up online you can get free shipping labels (paid for by the company that manufactures the products). I you want a giant box for larger groups such as in schools or office buildings, then you would have to pay, but those places have to pay for trash or recycling anyway, so it would just come down to figuring how to budget for this if they wanted to participate in a lower waste alternative.

I just checked the website, but the boxes are very expensive (for my budget). Also is that box a one time shipment or is my one time payment my ticket to continuously using that box back and forth (if so then I'd pay for it)? Please let me know!

will teracycle take styrofoam from air conditioners used as the fan cowling as well as the plastics from air conditioners? i tear down air conditioners to get the metals but there is also plastics and styrofoam that has to be put in the land fill since the styrofoam is often moldy and the plastics are of a type of plastic that no one takes.

It would be easier if the government pass a law making food wrappers recyclable friendly. Even limiting the use of disposable cups in fast food restaurants

This is a great idea for now, and they should be praised for not ignoring the issue. But it seems better to refuse to use these types of packaging rather than accept the packaging and try to find a use for it. The companies must stop creating the waste. If we only used the absolutely necessary plastic say for medical reasons, we'd have no problem. We did this in the past and can do that again.

Still want to know how to get companies to make easily / locally recyclable products and containers. In many cases, there is not such an option for classes of products? Does Terracycle charge the producer of each product they recycle? If not, the government / public law should force them too - or create the recycle streams required.

I wish one day all used packagings will not be thrown away, but can be exchanged with the factory or the manufacturer for new goods. For example, used packaging of brand A instant noodles, if collected as many as 20 packs can be exchanged for 1 pack of new packaging with the same brand. Likewise, for example, used sachets of brand B shampoo which were collected as many as 20 sachets, can be exchanged for 1 new sachet. Places of exchange are opened in large malls and shopping centers. I'm sure we can immediately solve the waste problem, and also change consumer behavior to properly store all forms of used packaging. This is more effective than the company's CSR budget which is used up for beach cleaning or similar activities, or is only exchanged for iron tumblers and pipettes, since this can not solving waste problems which are generally caused by the habits of the customers themselves. And also, customers can have a direct benefit by having their own needs, and they would buy more of the products ini this in turn benefit to producers as well. However, producers have the responsibility to re-manage their own waste packagings... The government actually also has the authority and political will to push producers by relocating company budgets for this packaging exchange mechanism.

they should mention that plastic can not be " recycled" only "downcycled" which means it can only be remade into weaker thinner plastics, unlike glass, paper or aluminum. These tiny plastics such as synthetic fibers then are so small they get into our water supply as "mircoplastics"
@AlecMuller

In general, yes, plastics are mechanically recycled (down-cycled). But more recently, companies have developed processes for chemical recycling, which requires more energy but produces material properties that are equally as good or better than the starting material. It all comes down to economics, something sadly missing from this video.

I've always wondered about this. The plastic take out spoons are made of plastic material, but do we recycle it? Sadly, I don't know what Waste Management does with our recyclable goods now with China and its policy. TerraCycle needs to be global.

My only issue with this company Is that I've been on the waiting list for over half a year now for 3 different things to recycle and I have yet to receive the shipping label. I work at a high school. I can contribute a lot. However since I'm not the Eco club director I'm not paying 80 bucks for a cardboard Box.
