The average American creates 4.5lbs of trash per day - but for Lauren Singer the amount of trash she has accumulated in the last 7 years can all fit in a mason jar.
In this One Small Step Spotlight, Lucy Biggers visits Lauren Singer’s Package Free shop. Package Free store is just as it sounds: package free. It’s a store that generates zero waste, and its owner, CEO Lauren Singer, has been waste-free since 2012.
Lauren Singer zero waste journey began in 2012 and in 2017 she opened up the Package Free shop. The Lauren Singer store Package Free carries products that are recyclable, reusable, and compostable alternatives to single-use products. Get a look inside Package Free and see all the different products sold - products like airtight multi-use bowls, reusable insulated cups and water bottles, reusable straws, produce bags, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soaps, hair care products, compostable deodorant sticks, and so much more.
‘Every person is different. Every lifestyle, where you live is different. So there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to reducing your waste,’ Lauren Singer suggests starting small by replacing one item in your trash with a reusable alternative.

Totally. But it doesn't hurt to try or educate. Small investments like a shampoo bar that lasts my a whole year since I only wash my hair once or twice a week or menstrual cups/cloth pads that removes the need for me to buy more pads/tampons really helps my savings and it's basically paying for itself with the use of it.

Yeah but your paying for the product to also be made ethically and witgout plastic, unfortunately at the moment the general public does not have common knowledge of the costs of making a product sustainably or ethically. Until the demand for sustainable products increases it is unlikely the price will decrease.

During summer I work outside, all bug spray came in plastic packaging and plastic free ones cost too much so I made my own. In a spray bottle, I just put in 20 to 40 drops of essential oil or do what I did and just used lemon zest. Then some apple cider vinegar and a bit of witch hazel. Look up diy zero waste insect repellent and you will find tons of recipes. There will always be other options!

Reuse food containers and buy bulk, buy a vegetable CSA program, make your own cleaning solution, buy used instead of new...etc. These are very affordable things to do and you don't have to shop at Package Free. For example, instead of buying reusable produce bags, I added two cotton shoe laces to turn my old cotton pillowcase into a produce bag. I made a cute sleeve for a Starbucks Frappuccino glass bottle and it is my reusable water bottle.

I live in Williamsburg (Brooklyn) and walk by Package Free very night on my way home. While I thoroughly support the idea, I still see PF take out huge cardboard containers and trash bags half the time I walk home. Also, the prices of this place is ridiculous. We are talking $50 for a metal bento box. You can easily purchase one elsewhere, package free and all for much less. I like the concept but the price attached is ridiculous.
@at2425__

Seriously?? Interesting.. Are you sure they're not recycling the cardboard boxes?
@lisayist
@lisayist 4 года назад
Cardboard can be recycled and they will be recycled because there is some value in it. Stainless steel is not cheap but that's the reason why metal are most likely recycled. You can use glass or bamboo container instead. Plus, that huge stainless steel bento box may be the most expensive item in store. I was looking for an air tight metal container for Kimchi and the large ones all cost around 50 bucks, even on Amazon.

Lauren like she says in the video doesnt only focus on the sustainability of the product itself but also of the way its obtained. Sometimes metal is mined under conditions which damage the environment greatly so those"cheaper " options you're talking about might be doing that. While Lauren focuses on the sustainability of the whole process from when the material is obtained till the product is manufactured and ready to be sold.

Now one thing I really want. Clothing and fabric made without plastic. One thing people don't know is that every time clothing with some sort of synthetic material is washed; It ends up leaching into the grey water and into the environment. Places like package free shop are important. I just wish a combination of organic clothing with no dyes or chemicals can be introduced with the concept of zero waste. So much clothing is thrown out after being worn for a short period of time. Much of what is donated in thrift is usually sent to foreign countries or to landfill. I have a theory that some of what is being thrifted is actual in response to the fabric causing irritation on the skin of the individual after washing and releasing the dyes and chemicals from the fabric surface. We need to change fashion culture and consumerism in general to see a massive change in our world.

All the reusable straws and grocery bags total to almost 5 dollars a piece... its hard to justify spending so much money at a store like this because you can get all of these products for way cheaper. I got my set of 13 reusable produce bags for 10 dollars. Its easy to see a store like this and get sucked into buying these aesthetically pleasing products but most of these things can be made at home or purchased for cheaper. It seems counter productive that she says single use plastics are overpriced when in reality, paying 5 dollars for 1 reusable straw is WAY too expensive. Its a great idea but not realistic for people who dont make tons of money. I wish people talked more about how to live zero waste without draining your bank account.

In India, before the late 80s and early 90s brought massive plastic packaging, everything was sold and purchased in cans, bottles, cloth bags, etc. Cold drinks and milk were sold in glass bottles which were exchanged. Snacks was sold loose by weight packaged in paper, often newspapers. Oils were purchased in cans. Grains were packaged in cloth or jute bags and people purchased in wholesale quantities more often than not. Storage was a big deal. Of course, there was very little "fast food" and "junk food" as most food was cooked at home. There were of course food carts which sold junk food, but those were local snacks, which were home cooked by the vendors. There were no supermarkets or malls.

Well, she definitely uses botox, if not also filler. It's so funny how her face just can't move anymore, and I wonder if she can ever be real enough to add those emptied botox bottles inside her mason jar. I don't think so!

I live in india amd there not so much awareness about sustainable living amd we do not have such package free shops here. Plus for a middle class person, the products are too expensive and way out of their budgets. Also for a college student looking to go for sustainable living like me, there aren't many options becoz as i said earlier the products are too expensive and not accesible to all

This is amazing an a great start to this new mind set, but I can’t happen to notice one of woman his wearing Levi’s and I’m sure her shirt as well that was made in sweat shop over sea, paying the works pennies on the dollar for their work, while they live in poverty. Just a thought. I know that’s not her lane, she’s working on recycled products, plastic free consumption.

The idea of clean zero waste life sounds good but it is one utopia. If it comes true - do you have an idea that the majority of the population will be jobless and hungry. So we go back down the evolution tree that our ancestors were trying so hard to climb between 4.6 to 6.2 million years.

this package free product idea is really cool but I don't think it is going to become popular among middle incomers because it's really expensive and many big manufacturing companies will not change the way they produce products unless they don't want to make big chunks of money in the long term.

So she builds a shop similar to all shops in Asia and then put hundred times the prices. Stainless steel stuff and bamboo are all from Asia. She probably gets them for a dime shipped from Asia.

petroleum products can also be environmental if we consider the amount of energy used and resources used to make these tools and utensils. when you dispose a plastic spoon, it can be recycled and molded again to a spoon. a never ending cycle

Why do we not ask why the cost of plastic does not reflect the environmental effect of the waste created? Why is plastic so cheap and why is it touted as sanitary?
