Can you turn a cheap £150 guitar into a professional, road-worthy, custom-shop-style guitar for £500… ALL IN? Well over the next couple of months, that’s exactly what we are going to find out. In each episode of this guitar build challenge I am going to change, mod and quite frankly butcher each individual part of this Harley Benton and hopefully make something really special. All the way from the pickups, hardware and even the finish. But I had to set myself a budget, because otherwise this whole thing could get out of hand quite quickly. So I have £500 to spend including the guitar!
In this episode we will be swapping out the stock electronics for upgraded components courtesy of James at ‪@HomeOfTone‬.
Big shoutout to James! Check out his website: www.homeoftone.co.uk/

when I upgraded to the 1 meg pots they were a little too big for the cavity so they were grounding to the copper foil I installed. So I wrapped the edge of the pots with electrical tape. I found the guitar jack was sometimes grounding so I did a little tape around it and it really helped. Then I realized after pouring love into the guitar, I could just try a J Mascis Jazzmaster for around 500 and maybe be happier. I did learn a lot though from the trem, to the bridge to the capacitor upgrade and tone bleed upgrade it was fun.

I use James for all my wiring looms etc and I have to say the quality of product and his level of customer service are brilliant. I would never go anywhere else

The grounding/screening only works at it's best when the guitar is assembled. As long as the strings are grounded correctly, the strings and all associated metal parts create a Faraday cage which as long as your hands are on the strings, will be active and will provide a shield from electromagnetic interference. Testing without the guitar assembled means that the electronics is more sensitive to electromagnetic interference, which is maybe why the problem disappeared.

Due to the fact that signal outputs from especially single coils can be less than 100mv, (sometimes when playing single strings softly, down to less than 5mv), the quality of the signal path can have a massive effect on the sound quality such as dynamics, frequency response and sensitivity. I always try to use the Gibson type screened cable for the pickups to improve immunity against electrical interference and this type of cable usually has quite a large cross section, minimising signal loss. Short as possible cables, good solder joints, good pots and switches all play a part in allowing the signal to travel with minimal losses. Additionally I use 2.5mm2 de-soldering braid as my ground cable, connected as close to the input socket ground to provide the easiest path for electrical noise to drain into the ground signal.

You could stick the one penny on the headstock like Brian may and then it’s exactly a 500 pound guitar

I think that’s a great idea

I bought a used Fender Player in great condition for £150 less than that lot but I suppose modding a cheap guitar is a good experiment to gain knowledge. I have electronic technician qualifications and know about components but find it rather pointless when most people can't hear much difference in the sound from a cheap guitar versus an expensive one once it has passed through multiple effects and the amplifier. The magic is in the players hands.

Idk if you have pennys where you are , but you could glue a penny to the headstock and call it a £500 guitar 😂 Call her Penny if you name guitars

Joe Dumstrum believes that throwing money at stuff makes it better. Replacing a pot with a more expensive one (with a brand name) is utter stupidity. Tolerance doesn't matter. Jazzmasters sound different because they come with 1M pot - that makes a difference. Not 10 or 20%.
