The appeal of this amp is that it has limited choices. If you start adding on loads of features it just becomes another modelling amp. This is designed for people that just want to plonk a good sounding light amp on stage, whack it up and off you go. No constant tweaking. Great idea.

Well, this is what Mustang III actually does - zero tweaking, just choose a preset amp on a screen - and off you go, and you've got plenty to choose out of 100 presets based on famous amps - vintage Fenders, Marshalls and Voxes. It sounds great, the only drawback is that it looks so modern, can't beat the mojo of a vintage, worn out amp with glowing valves. But then those come with their own, sometimes costly issues, plus they are not cheap either, so it's kind of difficult to find a middle ground here, although this Deluxe Reverb looks like an answer to that dilemma. 🤔

I was in a gigging band for 20 years and the weight is something to consider. The tone of the original valve amp may well be better but I'd still go for this. The audience won't notice and other musicians probably wouldn't notice if you didn't tell them not with drums and other guitars and an audience all contributing to the noise of the room. Why put your back out. Valid point!!!

I recently got this amp because I was sick of my tube amps always having issues. I’ve owned so many old Fenders as well as the reissues, and there is ALWAYS something going wrong with them. At this point I just want something that sounds good and won’t give me issues on a gig. I am aware that this amp can also break down, but at least there aren’t a million variables regarding HOW it can break down. There are no tubes to go bad, no trem tick to develop, no caps to dry out, etc. I’m just done with tube amp issues. This amp sounds killer. I love it.

@@ButternoteBackingTracks Is that common with solid state digital amps? I know everything dies eventually but as long as there aren't any power surges or it gets wet or anything else that usually destroys anything electrical, solid state digital modelling amps seem pretty robust from my experience. @@lawrenceagar6470it's not so much going wrong, it's having the option to get it repaired. The Tonemaster amps are pretty much all chip based processors, so I imagine if that goes, it's an expensive replacement. Fender are a bit vague about it too, which isn't reassuring! 😊

I love my TM/DR - best gigging and recording amp I’ve ever used. As a gigging musician the portability and ability to run a direct out to front of house is spectacular. I like that Fender isn’t trying to make the TM an all in one like a Mustang or Champ. I actually prefer the fact that it doesn’t allow things like custom IR’s etc. To each their own.

But bro...it's $1000 new for a mass produced digital amplifier? I don't understand the price point. Twin Reverbs exist on the used market *the real deal* for hundreds less? I don't care how heavy it is dude...I'm not 80 years old. Jeez, the only weight difference I notice is my wallet if I'm wiling to shell out over a grand for brand new gear that is literally a digital copy of the real deal. Don't get me wrong, these amps sound great!...that's what people misunderstand about my sentiment...I think these tonemaster amps sound good. I don't think they should be anywhere near over $500. There are other companies making digital modeling amps of higher wattage, that sound great...for far cheaper. And, there are several brands making all-tube higher watt amps for less than this. Say what you want about Bugera...they make a V22 combo for half the price of this and it's all valve. They make a 150W plexi head for 600$. Orange makes all tube amps for half the price. They make solid state amps that are arguably better for half the price. There are several tube amplifiers on the market that are less.

@@fluorophoremusic3679 - I don’t disagree. But the direct XLR line out, 1/4 of the weight for quick gig setups / tear downs, plus its ability to maintain the MASSIVE twin sound are all features I value. The moment we’re inspired in the studio I run and XLR into the interface through the built in IR’s and we’re recording. No more mic placements / fiddling - just play and record. I’m digging it. I've had the Twin version for about a year, which I bought specifically for gigging, but since gigs dried up, I've come to appreciate how great it is for both practicing and recording. I have a hand-wired Deluxe Reverb clone and custom shop '57 Twin-amp, and I think the TM Twin holds its own with those other amps. One of my favourite things is being able to scale the power down and run the volume on 10 - it's a special kind of overdrive. Also, running a boost into it works well with its high headroom and really pushes it into classic rock overdrive territory.

I've had my TMDR for a year and a half, I did the firmware reverb modification first because I was playing country, and it makes it much more controllable, less surfy but still rich and lush, and later I did the clipped cap mod. At the age of 72 and still gigging, this is a fantastic amplifier, and I've been using Fender tube amps since I was 12. As far as mid-range control, the twin has it, and for the DR it's just rolling off the highs and lows to let the mid come up with the volume, just like my DRRI, PRRI and CVR. And it's a high quality, rugged Fender amp. That's why it costs. It's highly unlikely that it's going to break. And they're probably not going to bring out a V2 really soon because it's well engineered, but they might make some more firmware upgrades, I suspect the two channel Reverb and tremolo mod is in the works or already on the shelf. If they make a 35lb. tonemaster Super Reverb, I will get one in a heartbeat. As soon as gigging opens back up, I'm thinking about trading in my CVR on a TMTR. If I'm recording and desperately need a real tube sound, I'll use a Vibro Champ, but for live performance, who needs to carry all that weight? Especially if it's going to go through mics and into a digital PA anyway, the TM output is going to deliver better.

I bought this amp for,two reasons. I should first say, I briefly had the twin first and returned it for this amp instead because for me the twin was overkill. Reason one is the lightweight and size. The size is just small enough to be easily transported but still big enough to look the part on stage. Second reason is I wanted the classic Fender tube sound, without the tube maintenance hassles. I’ve been completely happy with my purchase. I enjoy turning it on running my few favorite pedals and getting all the sounds I need.

So far I am very happy with the tone of the amp (even if the mids are scooped a bit - I can fix with a pedal if necessary) and how it takes pedals. I really wish that it had an effects loop, but I knew that before I purchased the amp. I wanted the amp because of its attenuation capability, and I am very happy now having 5 different "wattage" levels. All in all I am very happy with the amp and how it compares tone wise to my tube amps.

I have both V1 Tone Master Twin and the Deluxe and can’t say enough Positive things about both! I understand they only have a Two Year Warranty but I’ve already contacted a Tech who works on them if needed. I did this Before purchasing them from Sweetwater. I’ve been using them for a while now and have had no problems running pedals including a Boss Equalizer in Front of both Amps. No excess noise on either, in fact both of mine are very quiet. Thanks for the info though, it gives others things to consider before making their purchase. Cheers from Salem, Ohio.

Terrific review Phillip. You're so on the money. I've had mine for about a year now. Lots of amps over the years. Got a '65 RI Super Reverb, even though I already had (and still have) a '68 Super Reverb that is just, ummmm. SPLENDID. That's what was thinking. Also have various Marshall, PRS "30", vintage Egnater TOL50, blah blah blah. Just wanted to give some perspective. I too, bought my Dlx after being fooled almost every time I heard an A-B Tonemaster against the the real thing. Contrary to popular belief, the Dlx Tonemaster is not going after the '65 RI, it's going after the real thing. For cleans, overdriven, reverb, and tremolo, I find it to be excellent. Not all the way there, but fantastic for grab and go stuff, as well as the obvious living room/bedroom amp. Fender really pumped up the dominant characteristics of the original. I do hear fizziness with some of my pedals. Had I to do it over again? I'd get the RI. But that's me being stupid picky. It's really a nice sounding amp and I'm not unhappy with mine all things considered. What I think I need for it, per Phillip's comment/recommendation, is an eq pedal. In fact, I'm headed to Reverb right now to get me one! Phillip, got a discount code for me? 🤠

I did have concerns about the durability/repairability, which is why l waited until l found a used one for a better price (£650 UK, as opposed to £800+ new). For the same reason most of us haven’t been gigging, l’ve only used it twice with a band - it coped really well - so it’s too soon to say how it will last. @Luke I wouldn’t say it has a lack of mids before the update. I think it depends on what attenuation you are playing at. At low watt attenuation before the update, you can get some very high treble frequencies. That are not for everyone. I didn’t seem to notice it as much in higher attenuation settings. Also I have a twin not a deluxe so maybe it has a bit more mids than the deluxe. I think before the update and after they both sound great. However I personally prefer the updated sound and at lower attenuation the eq works better. Hope that helps.

I bought a used crate G40xl an foot switch for about 120 shipped . I had to get them separately but it works for me. Why so cheap like most of my used gear it needed maintenance quick pot cleaning an good to go. I do things on a less then shoestring budget new would be nice top shelf even better but if it works it works. I want to thank all of those out there that upgrade an put their old used gear back in circulation. I wouldn't be where I am if it wasn't for you guys. Thanks

The fact that it's an expensive digital amp is a deal breaker. You'll always be able to get a regular valve amp repaired
@bluesrocker91
@bluesrocker91 2 года назад
That's the thing that's putting me off too... I know for a fact that most techs won't service digital amps. They'll deal with valve and solid state gear all day, but digital signal processing is a whole different beast, and not something you can just fix with a soldering iron and multimeter. If they were half the price they might be worth it... But to invest nearly £1000 into an amp you can't get serviced is foolish and bound to end in tears.

@@bluesrocker91 In my area amp repair Is slim to none. Hard to find anyone who works on them. And the few that do are months out. Yes I have tube amps but I picked up the super reverb tone master and love it. I have been a tube snob for years. But when a amp goes down and I have to wait months to get it fixed well that don’t work very well. Being a tube guy myself I am definitely not disappointed in these digital amps. Actually very impressed with them. You get what you pay for. Fender has knocked it put of the park with these amps. Don’t listen to some guys ten reasons why you shouldn’t buy it. You have to go and check it out yourself.
@bluesrocker91
@bluesrocker91 2 года назад
@@ericwring6758 I'm not knocking them for their tone... From what I've heard they sound fantastic. And the idea of a lightweight combo where I don't have to worry about changing valves really appeals to me... I'm just worried about what happens when that warranty expires and something goes wrong... Right now I can get my valve amps serviced by a local tech. It's expensive, but doable... I don't know if I could get this repaired in the long term, and because of that it's difficult to view this as a "forever" amp. If in ten years it's central processor burns out, it's rendered useless and I can't even sell it on.

I just bought a new floor model in perfect condition and full warranty for $799. It’s not an exact clone of the ‘65 re-issue, but it’s very, very close. It has plenty of power That attenuator is the cat’s meow and having a line out is wonderful. I play in an acoustic duet, but I do some electric fills with a Tele or a Strat. The venues we perform in don’t require a ton of volume. This amp is perfect for what we do.

Digital is where it’s at and where it has been for the last 10 years in my opinion. Fender came out with a great digital amp 10 years ago called the mustang. I purchased the Mustang IV (2. 12in Celestion 80watt speakers) …I still have this amp today…and going strong. This first generation mustang is still an amazing amp with all its onboard effects and big sound. I can honestly say it’s the best amp I’ve ever played. Those amps have been a huge success and cash cow for fender. I guess fender realized that they could ride the success to the next level by taking their most popular legendary amps and making them digital carrying the same name badge. If anyone has noticed, Fender does use quality speakers in these digital amps. If the digital processors ever go out in these amps, you can always use these amps as a speaker cab For a power amp to sit on top.

I’ve got the twin blonde and absolutely love it. Mr McKnight makes some really great points, some of which are addressed on the blonde; the creamback speakers and the mid control specifically. I don’t think it sounds quite as digital as he suggests, especially when you’re not driving it hard. If you want a lightweight clean pedal platform amp with a great IR out for live or recording then it’s a winner.

Great review, I will say I don’t expect an updated version to include some of these updates. I believe they are not mistakes or misses but specific choices to exclude some modern digital amp type options. I think they tried really hard to make this like the amp it imitates. My guess is they leave the effects loops and other more modern touches to the mustang and others and while they will update some sounds my guess is the amp remains as close to the original as they can.

I heard Tim Pierce say the reason he doesn't have Combo Amps, is that for recording , is more convenient to put the Cab in a separate room where it can be cranked up so loud he can't be in the same room with it, but it gets the best tone. That way, he can have the Head nearby where he plays/records, and doesn't have to get up and go to the room where the Cab is being miked to adjust its settings.

I was fortunate enough to pick up a used one for under $600 and at that price I’ve been super happy with it as an easy to use digital alternative to a classic sounding tube amp. I do agree with a couple of the criticisms made in this review. The lack of a headphone out jack is annoying (although I kept my previous amp for that). Phil’s point that having a few extra hidden digital features for those that want them could have been included is a fair comment although that’s not what I was looking for myself.

For me, I think I’d rather just spend a little more and have the regular reissue. With all of those two notes products and similar products you can add a lot of functionality to tube amps and that’s really exciting to me! Granted it is a much more expensive option altogether but I think I’d be happier in the long run. That’s just me though! If I wanted something digital I’d probably go for a product more like iridium personally. I’m glad these are being made though!
