It's getting old hearing that oil based products don't work as attractants, fish can only smell and taste water soluble products, yet fish sense and are repelled by gasoline and sunscreen, which certainly aren't water soluble. So what is the explanation for the paradox? If oil based products can repel them, why can't oil based attractants work? What about emulsions or suspensions, since we're going to talk about chemistry, would they work as a medium for attractants?

Not only that, but some of what a wounded fish releases is oil based.

I’ve always been told that gas smell repels fish. Well I’m here to dispel that. Fished a tournament and the boater splash’s gas on him while filling the boat. Get to the tournament and he catches a ton more fish than I did ( as a co-angler) we were worm fishing during the summer. We joke about this to this day

I've read the studies Berkly put out on this subject- about how the oil doesn't break down into small enough particles for the fish's olfactory senses to be able to process it- it makes sense. Our olfactory glands work in a similar way- certain molecules will fit into the sensor, like a key into lock, and those molecules can be processed, and thus we smell them. But other molecules won't fit and that substance to us is odorless- it has no smell. When something dissolves into the water it just means it breaks down into really tiny particles or that it chemically reacted with the water and was broken down that way, into particles small enough to be processed by the fish's olfactory sense. So- if all that is true- and I believe it is- why does JJ's work sometimes? Its garlic based- meaning it has garlic oil in it- it must be the dye they're responding to- not the smell. The next time I get on a JJ's bite I'm going to try scentless dye of the same color and see if I still get bit. I think I will- I think that's what they're responding to- the pop of color you've added.

Years ago I read an article from a guy that worked at a salmon ladder. They captured fish migrating upstream to spawn, milking eggs from the females. At the end of the day he rinsed his hands off in the water, next guy did the same thing. Third guy put his hands in the water and the fish immediately disappeared back downstream. He noticed this so they repeated the same thing multiple times and got the same result every time. When I was a kid my brother and I would fish our farm pond with worms. He would always catch quite a few more. I got to the point that I had him bait my hook and then I’d catch about as many as he did If you’ve ever pike fished, all pike but particularly smaller ones give off an awful smelling slime when caught. I assume it’s a defense mechanism so that if they are attacked by a larger fish they will be let go. Dunno. We try to release them using pliers so we don’t get slimed. Seems to help If you don’t think fish can smell, go to the ocean and put blood in the water, then dive in. The sharks will change your opinion

I grew up here in WA fishing the rivers for steelhead and salmon and always just assumed the first thing a fish smells on my bait is the last thing I touched when putting that bait on. I brought that philosophy over to my bass fishing. I use it as a masking agent more so than an attractant. More importantly I "believe" it is a positive and confidence can go a long way.

Thanx Matt. Whenever the subject of bass vision or sense of smell comes up I go on a quest for that talking bass. Experts can say a bass has x- kind of scent receptors and y-kind of cones in their eyes. All that information goes to the basses brain and there is noway to know how it is interpreted by the bass.

Fish and aquatic mammals have some the best sense of smell and taste. My sister is a wildlife biologist and most my knowledge for fishing, is from her. And it has helped me more than anything. Even taking tips from the pros don't hold a candle to the knowledge I've learned about fishing from her.

@@MattStefanFishing Little something I learned. Which I've always kept to myself, but f*** it. Is that fish sauce (that's for making Asian dishes) and even fish oil for nutrients. Is a very potent fish attractant. And I would say even better than any fish attractant you can buy.
@NedRigNerd
@NedRigNerd 5 месяцев назад
Because when it comes to fish sauce and fish oil. There is nothing like it on the market and truly captures the essence of fish.
@rustyshacklfur2637
@rustyshacklfur2637 5 месяцев назад
@@NedRigNerd Sure there is. There's all kinds of natural oils out there, but the problem is solubility and absorption. Plastisol doesn't absorb scent very well and oil washes off fast. You have to infuse the plastisol if you want a scent to last. Berkeley put more R and D into that than anyone. It took them over 20 years to develop what Gulp is today and its effectiveness is undeniable. I like and use Pro Cure gel which holds much longer than just oil but it's organic so you have to keep it cool and it can be a mess. Zman and SKs elaztech material doesn't have the density of plastisol and although it's not like a scent sponge like gulp, it does absorb scent. As far as the oil/water soluble scent debate goes I have a hard time believing that oil based scents don't work. I've had too many days where adding some procure to my bucktail gave immediate results and or out fished other guys who were using traditional plastics.
@binkwood
@binkwood 5 месяцев назад
I can tell you for a fact, when Berkley power worms first came out, panfish would absolutely grab the tails (totally missing the hook, and regardless of color)and you could literally lift them out of the water. No other plastic on the market got that reaction before or since (including the current Power Bait formula). That indicates that at least "sunfish", which the largemouth bass is, absolutely can taste. Doug Hannon has pointed out a long time ago that fish do have an olfactory system but they do not develop until a fish matures indicating their sense of smell is used more for "mature functions", such as breeding, rather than feeding. A fish needs to eat immediately after birth so if their sense of smell was necessary for their survival they would have it from birth. Within a couple of years sunfish no longer latched onto Power Worms like they did, so Berkley obviously changed their formula, likely to make it cheaper. Personally I believe ground sardines were in the original Power Worm formula. I'm sure if you could get an honest answer about from Dr Keith Jones he would confirm they changed their formulas shortly after releasing it. I read Jones' book (decades ago), in it he stated "earthworm scent" was the most attractive to bass in his testing, despite the fact that most of the better selling scents weren't as attractive to bass. That proves anglers purchase based on their perception over that of what actually was preferred by fish. As mentioned, by Matt, in order for a fish to "smell" anything it has to be water soluble but that means it is washes off anything you put it on. Oil based scents may contain "taste" that make a fish hold a bait longer, but site and not smell, are what originally encouraged the fish to bite. All lures will catch fish in the right condition, and none will work in every condition.

I wish Berkeley would publish more of their studies. I get that they can’t smell oil based substances (that’s why so many fish die with oil/gas spills). I wondered whether they could take them. (Different receptors and neural network.) I really want to know whether they’ve tested for saliva’s effect on bass. Is it a deterrent? (Seems like it screams human!, but we use it to lube knots all the time.) No sunscreen or feet for sure. I am also curious as to how much they understand about the lateral line. What frequency range stimulates it? Do some bates work better because they vibrate at that frequency?

Out on the coast, one of the best places to fish is an oil slick generated by a dead fish or mini fish that film gets on the water and other fish are able to process that as a feeding happening. So I would be curious what the explanation for that is and how that science works also if you take two exact crappie jigs and you put that powerbait on one of them and not the other. The one with it tends to outperform the one without it three or four to one. In my experience. So I do believe the research is good there for the sense and specific flavors.

Great video!! I have been a believer in 2 scent products for decades. The first is Berkley Power Bait and the other is the Original Fish formula. After hearing you say that oil based products cant be detected by fish I wonder how the Fish Formula gets the results that it does because I think it is oil based. Whatever the reason behind it is I dont know, but I know it works. I have also heard many great Catfishermen claim that fresh cut shad is better than frozen shad because of the oils in the fresh shad are stronger. If a fish cant smell oils then how do they smell the shad oil?? Not questioning you, just thinking out loud. I have always heard the sun screen thing all my life. A local Crappie guide here in the Dallas area who also has a RU-vid channel did a video last year where he smeared sun screen all over his jigs and dropped them down and still caught plenty of Crappie. Maybe Crappie just are not as sensitive to that smell or are just dumber than Bass. I dont know, but it was eye opening.

Water based products are sensed and tasted by fish is true, but that truth has nothing to do with oil based products. Stating that oils and oil based products are not sensed by fish seems misguided. Here’s why. Organic life has fats and oils. Baitfish are organic examples of this. Menhaden oil is used as an attractant in saltwater. Anchovies are oily. Threadfin shad are oily. Fish smell and sense baitfish due to their scent trails which emanate from their bodies. When speckled trout burp up while gorging on baitfish, oils rise to the surface and create slicks. To us humans, the slicks smell like fresh cut grass or watermelon.

The logic defies what I’ve witnessed for years in saltwater fishing and in the saltwater aquariums I had for years. Watched trigger fish munch live food 1 tiny bite at a time and you can see the oil in the clean water. I’ve touched food in the powerhead current from above without releasing it and watched fish and invertebrates come out from hiding within seconds. Pro-cure is a thick oily product and it works very well. Just my experience. Love your channel. Hope you crush it at Toledo Bend.

I’d be curious if there are studies done by people not affiliated with bait companies. I don’t put a lot of faith in studies by people who have money on the game . Just seems like a lot of conflicting information

Lots of the data is taken from testing done by outside sources and not Berkley
