Romania desperately needs skilled workers, whether in the service sector, construction or care industry. Since Romania joined the EU in 2007, hundreds of thousands have left the country. Businesses are looking to Asia to fill the gap.

As a Romanian, I can answer the question very easily. The owners of these hotels pay next to nothing, that's why they can't attract Romanian workers. Because the workers are not treated fairly, they get cheated with money, underpaid, and overworked, while the owner practices higher rates for rooms and food than in Spain or France. This is nothing new, the owners were exploiting employees in this industry for tens of years, the only difference is that the Romanian employees finally woke up and saw that there are better opportunities for them than being slaves to a hotel owner in Constanta.

And just 2 million Romanians earn the minimum wage!!! Not to mention that many write the minimum wage on the contract and receive more in hand to avoid paying extra taxes. By the way, the minimum wage is 3,000 lei, roughly double what you said! And you forgot to tell the people that 96% of Romania's population already own a home or some land, so the rent isn't a big issue as it is in other countries! Stay in school and educate yourself. It's your fault if you accept wages that only a village fool would!

As a Romanian, I feel sick to see these business owners saying that Romanians don't want to work for them and see that they bring foreigners on a low salary and take advantage of them. It breaks my heart and angers me so much to hear that as a foreigner, he is forced to stay with so many other people in the same room. Romanians have also shared rooms with lots of others when working abroad and they still do. Somehow that is very badly seen in Romania and they are made fun of and beeing called « capsunari » etc. I think that we wouldn’t have gotten in this situation if would have been kinder to each other. Plenty romanians, including myself, have left not because of a bad financial situation but because of the judgmental character of people. But we seem to have completely forgotten about the dramas of romanian families that were pulled apart, now we only feel sorry about the foreigners that go through the same. But I guess we deserve our faith as romanians (loosing all those millions of citizens and in the close future the work market will be saturated with the foreigners to a point where it will become unbearable, mark my words; it is what has happened in the west, now the French for exemple are beeing forced to move to the countryside just so that they have some peace and quiet cause foreigners bring pollution of all kinds with them), that’s what happens when « it’s every man for himself » thinking becomes the motto of a nation. We have never been able to appreciate one another and our culture, yet we appreciate other people’s cultures, food etc.

@Jorjgasm Год назад
When they say foreign workers, they mean Africans and poor Asians. But there are plenty of workers... in the EU. This is not a labor issue, it is a wage issue. Romania is part of a labor market of 450 million people, and it also has Ukraine, the Western Balkans and the R of Moldova nearby. The problem is that labor importers are catering to people who can't or won't pay the required wages to clear the market and get labor. Example: I live in Bucharest. The tourist trap restaurants in the center have more and more Sri Lankan and other staff, but my perfectly adequate neighborhood restaurants near the center have Romanian staff who are just as competent. How can a hugely busy and profitable restaurant not find workers but my more affordable neighborhood one can and why doesn't that restaurant steal the workers from this one, by offering the higher wages it can definitely afford? The answer is cost minimization and the government aids them in this. It is all a con. And it is not just the hospitality industry. All areas complaining of lack of workers are suffering from low capital investment into automation, from low efficiency or from deceptive cost minimization presented as labor shortage. I don't fault these companies, but I fault the government for not following the interest of Romanian workers, who need labor scarcity to increase their bargaining power and capital investment to increase productivity.

Romania is a wonderful country. As a Belgian citizen I visited it for the first time in 1997. A lot has changed since the '90 and for the better. Also the average salaries have gone up but not at the same rate as the living costs and not like in other eastern European countries. I do not understand why. It is simple, make the salaries at the same rate versus the living cost like it is in other European countries and people will not move around in Europe that much anymore because why should they? This change is long overdue and the discrepancies should be fix as soon as possible.

Trust me , the corruption is the problem. Imagine that the teachers in RO who are in service for 20 years earn just 800 euro/month and the new ones 500/month. They did a protest with 3-4 weeks before the final exams students have in 8th and 12nd classes to put pressure on the gouverment to give them an increase of 400 euro(which is fair considering the prices going up almost as western). You know what the gouverment leader said? "Stop doing silly stuff before the exams , you endanger hundred of thousand of students , get back to your classes" Instead of finding a solution ,they were AMAZED that they have the guts to this now (and prob. dont even know the definition of a 'protest'). They claimed to give them "bonuses"(which can be rejected anytime) and to give them an increase in a FEW YEARS. ( Also they didn't paid the teachers during the protest ). They said they don't have any money (and were only half of the year though) Most of the money is being stolen anyway. To have money in Romania u need to do find 'ways' to beat the system's taxes. Hello! I am a Romanian living and working in Romania for an American company. The are a few issues with the average romanian employers: - they lack of entreprenurial education and culture; - they have no respect for honest work and honest workers; they usually behave like medieval landowners, entitled to decide life and death; - they always thinks that employees earn much more than they deserve; in their mind, five hundred euros a month is enough to have a decent living... From my experience, a salary of at least a thousand euros a month could be enough to have a decent life in Romania, IF you have a smaller rent (let's say 150 euros per month), you don't smoke or you don't generally indulge in any unreasonable spending, and you don't need to go on vacation. Those poor fellars from Nepal are more than happy to work their a** off for five hundred euros a month. I use to be like that twenty years ago. But now I can't. I am married, I have rent to pay and generally more obligations that require a bigger salary. So, if the romanian employers want romanian employees to work for them, they should start to pump more money in the salary department.

Someone in comments mentioned that cup of coffee in beachfront hotels in Romania costs more than 6 euro. I doubt a lot of people drink it. Having such crazy pricing policy there is no surprise that hotel occupancy is not great. It's simple math, if you have a hotel with one hundred rooms, you can jack up the price as $100 for a night for a room and it will have 10% occupancy (10 rooms occupied and 90 rooms vacant). Ten rooms for $100 brings you $1,000 per night. However, if you decrease the price for a room from $100 to $50, your occupancy rate will increase as well. Having $50 for a room per night you will have 50% occupancy, which brings you to $2,500 (50 rooms times $50) per night, which is two and a half times more. Don't the owners of the hotel know that? It's the basics of every business. So, they can spend $1,500 ($2,500 - $1,000) extra profit on increasing the salary and this will attract more local employees.
@gregorgreg5337
@gregorgreg5337 Год назад
You are missing one point here: these prices are not for romanians but for foreigners from western Europe and America. The vast majority of romanians will never pay 6 euros for a coffee but people from richer countries will because for them this price is normal/fair. And because of greed and other bad habits, these owners focus on making more profit by paying very low salaries to their employees. And another flaw in your business plan is that if your hotel has an average occupancy of 50% that means you need more staff to clean the rooms and keep everyone pleased/working. Which translates into another wage you have to pay as an owner. This the mentality here. Keep the profit to maximum while everything else (staff, quality of products and services) at minimum. You know what's funny? We, romanians tend to go in Greece/Bulgaria for vacation because we dislike the services our own people are providing and I think that says a lot!

Most of those who left are an unqualified workforce, without higher education, and the overwhelming majority of them still love Romania and dream of returning back to their country and relatives one day. That's why they built houses and started businesses with the money earned abroad. Most Romanians working abroad are facing racism and are working long working hours, breaking their backs for the money. The situation is the same in Bulgaria. After decades of economic problems and low birth rates, now there aren't enough people to work in low paying sectors such as tourism. The hotel owners here are straw men for the mafia as well, so the basic principles of supply and demand do not always apply. Money comes in from other sources, not from hotel activities. Also, those same people paid pitiful wages, made workers work overtime every day and in the end didn't pay them. Now they're crying over the lack of workers.

This is exactly the situation. Romanians don't want anymore to work 7 days a week, 10-12 hours per day for 500-600 euros. Usually this type of ''employer" overworks and underpays his workforce. And the lack of people is real, younger generation of 19-20 entering workforce are less than a half of generation of 60-65 who retires in the same year.
