Just discovered your channel. It's amazing. So informative. Thank you for all the videos, they are very helpful. We are currently making a difficult decision. Whether to pair bond our single gerbil or not. She is nearly three, and lost her sister due to cancer. They had an entire spare bedroom to run around, play and explore (with their cage being the nest/sleeping area/safe space). In this respect, they have been quite spoiled. It's been two months since Pepper passed away, and Evie is not herself. She was always the passive and 'more innocent' gerbil. Not a bad bone in her body. Now she spends most of her time sleeping and only really comes out to eat. There is a charity who house lone gerbils and pair bond them with others for you (they are well established and seem very trustworthy). But it means a three hour journey and handing Evie over to them for a few weeks while they try to pair bond her with another gerbil. We don't know what is best, we are very torn. We are afraid of getting into a vicious circle or heart ache (sooner or later, there will always be one gerbil left). They are such lovely animals, but it is very heartbreaking when one is alone/lonely. We try to spend more time with her, and she still has access to the whole room 90% of the time, with boxes, tubes and sand baths. But she rarely explores anymore. And I just fear she's simply not happy and has nothing to really live for. The freedom we gave them meant that they never really tamed like other pets might (we hear the occasional story in which the gerbils are extremely tamed, and will sit in their owner's hand without trying to escape or run away, etc.). Evie 'knows' us, but we can never replace her sister no matter how much time we try to spend with her). Thank you again for all the amazing content. It really informs us and can help us make a decision that we can finally be at peace with (i.e. whether to hand her to this charity or not, whether to pair bond her with another gerbil or not, etc.) For clarity, the charity wouldnt keep her, they would simply try to pair bond her for us (with their having done this before, and being more experienced, etc.)

Thanks, I'm glad the videos have been helpful for you ☺️ Sorry to hear about the loss of Pepper, it's so tough saying goodbye to these little guys In terms of wee Evie, it does sound like she's feeling quite depressed by herself so is really in need of a new friend by her side. The charity sounds like a great option! It's so difficult to find services like that, so if you're able to I definitely think it's a good idea to try for Evie's sake The cycle of owning gerbils is an unfortunate reality of keeping them as they're social so do need constant companionship. My own plan for if I ever decided to stop keeping gerbils (something I find highly unlikely at this moment in time) would be to re-home the remaining solo to someone who could bond them with a friend so they could live out their final days with the company and companionship they need, as heartbreaking as it would be for me, I think we owe it to them to keep their best interests at the forefront and make sure they always get what they need. I personally enjoy the cycle as it means I'm never without gerbils around, but I understand not everyone feels the same way and sometimes life changes and we're not able to keep them anymore for whatever reason It sounds like you're a wonderful and caring gerbil parent though and I'm sure Evie and Pepper have/had a wonderful life with you, good luck with whatever comes next, I'll be here to help if you need it 🙂

Have you looked into bin cages? They're not suitable as permanent homes, but if funds are tight they can be great for giving them more space. It's also worth looking into seeing if you could foster another gerbil from a rescue, not only will it help to make your single gerbil feel less alone by setting them up as neighbours, you also get to help out a local rescue 🙂

Sorry to hear that, it's an unfortunate risk of keeping gerbils. If their fight wasn't too bad, you may be able to attempt to rebound them after a period of separation, or alternatively (and probably the safest option) would be to get them both new friends to pair with

I know its been a few months, but please help I dont know what to do. I had two gerbils, brothers by blood, though only a month and a half in one of the brothers died. I am afraid my gerbil is hiding his depression, hed always follow his brother around, theyd sleep together and drink water at the same time, it was so cute. For atleast a month now hes been equally as active and playful, has toys, food, alot of bedding (I know im saying alot of unnecesary information) but im just wondering is that ever enough to keep them active enough they dont need another partner? what if the partner I get ends up being really rude, or they fight or just something goes wrong im really afraid Im searching about it and watching videos and I want to convince my mom to get another one but I, myself, am afraid itle do more damage than anything

As I explained in the video, human company is not a substitute for same species companionship. There's always a risk it won't work out, but as I said in the video, if it does fail then they can be set up as neighbours instead so they still get some social interaction

Have 4 gerbils, 1 of them starting attacking 1-2 of the others. This only happened after 1 year+. Now I seperated them after asking a specialist what to do. She said once blood is drawn, they will not go back to normal. So I'm really pondering on what to do.
@PetConnectionInternational
@PetConnectionInternational 11 месяцев назад
Unfortunately large groups of gerbils almost never work out long term, I've never heard of a single example of a group of 4 making it to completion. They have very sensitive social structures and when they get hormonal they're quite likely to fall out, especially in large groups, hence why it's generally recommended to only keep gerbils in pairs. In your case I'd suggest splitting them into 2 pairs, keep the two that were attacked together and try and bond the neutral third gerbil with your attacker, you'll need to use the split tank method to try and rebond them though as gerbils can forget each other very quickly once separated. Here's a video going through the split tank method that should help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9VED0HD3FDo.htmlsi=U8iNnsHUpNoAwh4v good luck, I'll be here if you need any more help 🙂

Hi!!! I saw that despite the video coming out a bit ago you’ve still been answering comments! I have an odd situation I havent been able to get many answers despite researching. I’ve dealt with other small animals before and I have 3 gerbils with my partner now! We first got Lady and Silly, Silly was in a lone cage while Lady was with two others. Unfortunately Silly passed away unexpectedly soon after :( We got Bambi who is another girl gerbil from where we got her from and was her buddy before along with the other gerbil. They quickly bonded. We returned a few weeks later to see that the third gerbil was still there all alone! So of course we got her knowing it may not work out but leaving her alone is worse, we named her Remy and shes adorable and friendly much like the others! Unfortunately they aren’t accepting her back, which I know they lose the smell, but how could we leave her all alone. Of course we seperated her because even though we introduced them properly they will both iniate fights with her while Remy is just trying to be friendly. We got them all pretty close together since we knew they needed a buddy! We got Remy late sept - to early oct and have tried many attempts to get them to get along. Remy doesn’t seem to be depressed, is quite energetic and hasn’t seemed to lose any weight. She loves being around my partner and I, climbing on us, observing us and jumping up to get our attention to be let out and see us! I was just wondering if you had any advice, she is an adorble friendly, but anxious gerbil. We have since gone home to our families for the holidays and I took remy hoping that maybe they need a redo when we reunite, and of course a space where Remy feels safer. Sorry its so long I feel like wveey detail may be important to all their separate reactions to each other!

Unfortunately bondings can't be done 2-1, as you've seen, once a pair has formed their clan they treat any new gerbil as an intruder and attack them, so I strongly recommend avoiding any attempted introductions between the pair and solo or there's a very high risk of more fights and injuries. Remy will need a new (single) friend to bond with via the split tank method: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9VED0HD3FDo.htmlsi=KHqc0ANk8Y7CC8fy Even if she isn't showing obvious signs of depression, as I mentioned in the video they will often hide their loneliness, and as social animals it's not fair to keep them alone, as she's anxious too, a friend may help her gain confidence, like it did with our Luna. I'd advise you put word out to some local rescues and look on rehoming sites and groups to try and find a suitable friend for Remy 🙂

Please don't let guinea pigs and gerbils interact, it's extremely dangerous, someone could get hurt. Gerbils need same species company for their mental well-being, being active doesn't necessarily mean they're happy, Pumbaa was very active by herself, it was only when we introduced her to Luna that we realised how lonely she'd been without another gerbil

@@kaiwaslost awh, that's such a shame 😞 I know this is a heart wrenching thing to suggest, but if he's clearly showing signs of depression, then he really needs a friend badly, if your parents really won't let you get another one then it may be worth looking around to see if there's anyone with a solo to bond with that could take him in, just for his sake you know, I worry how he'll cope for much longer as he's not gotten any better in nearly a year, it sounds like he really desperately needs a friend poor sausage 🥺 I know how awful it is to even think about, I've gotten close to needing to make that decision myself a few times when I've been struggling to fund them, I know it's incredibly heartbreaking, but sometimes the little guys need more than we can give them, and it's a very selfless thing to let them go to someone who can. You're clearly a wonderful, caring owner and I have no doubt in my mind that if you had the choice, you'd absolutely give him the company he needs, it's just unfortunate timing that you're not in a position to do that right now xx

@PetConnectionInternational
@PetConnectionInternational 11 месяцев назад
I'm so sorry you had to experience that X If you found one partially eaten, it's likely they died of something else and the other gerbil tried to "clean up", which is something they will naturally do to avoid attracting predators, as awful as it is for us. So I don't think your current gerbil would necessarily be a problem with a new friend, I think it's worth trying to find someone for her, even if she fell out with the previous gerbil, that doesn't mean she wouldn't bond with someone else The main concern would be why the second gerbil passed, you said your first gerbil passed away from the cold, have you resolved that problem now?

So sorry this happened 💚 I replied to your other comment about bonding Hailey, but it's worth noting that a 20 gallon tank is much too small for permanent housing, that could be why they ended up fighting over the limited space, the minimum size for gerbils is 100x50x50cm, so before getting someone new it would be worth finding a new tank for them. I've got some infographics giving some examples of suitable enclosures that you can find on the community tab here on RU-vid, on my Instagram page and on our Facebook group x

Heather, could you offer some assistance? Here’s some background info. 7 months ago, I adopted my goddaughter’s 1.5 year old male gerbil as she lost interest in him. After some time, I was able to locate a male pup who was 10 weeks old. After 2 weeks of the bonding them via split tank, they were eventually moved into their permanent 40 gallon breeder tank with topper. For 5 months,Teddy (the adult) and Ray ( the youth) got along great without issue until Ray wanted to become the dominant one. I could tell something was brewing. Just as I went to get my leather gloves to have on hand “just in case” a brawl broke out, a bawl broke out. I was able to separate them but blood had been drawn. I considered trying to re-bond them but decided it best not to. Yesterday , I was able to pick up 2 6-week old male pups with the intention of pairing them with my single males. Here’s my dilemma. I feel guilty about separating the pups from each other to split tank them with an adult male gerbil. I feel like I’m breaking up their bond and putting them under stress. My question: Is it ok to split up the pups to pair each with an adult male? My initial plan was to only get one pup to pair with my youngest adult male , Ray since Teddy has been alone the majority of his life and seemed to actually enjoy it and be ok. THEN, I saw your video about solitary gerbils hiding their loneliness and decided to get a pup mate for Teddy as well. Am I doing the right thing, breaking up the bonded pups to pair with my adult males? I apologize for the length of this comment but not sure what to do. TIA
@PetConnectionInternational
@PetConnectionInternational Год назад
Was there anything with the setup that could have possibly caused Ray and Teddy to fall out? So something like a single entrance hide, single water bottle, food bowl, single wheel, singles of toys they both really liked, single tunnels/routes into the topper, anything like that or anything else you noticed tension over prior to their fight?
@nikkigee5743
@nikkigee5743 Год назад
@@PetConnectionInternational All the conditions mentioned above do not exist EXCEPT I had only one 12inch wheel in the tank. Ray ran on the wheel during the day and Teddy at night. Maybe, one of them wanted to change that and that was what caused the scuffle. Also, what I did notice was Ray ( the young adult) chasing Teddy trying to mount him and a lot of squeaking going on in the burrow. I believe that Ray was trying to overthrow Teddy as the dominant one. This behavior occurred intermittently while normal gerbil "getting along "behaviors were more prevalent . I don't know what was the last straw that caused the fight to happen. While there was some blood, it wasn't terrible and once separated , both were back to eating, running on their wheels within 20 minutes. Teddy and Ray have been in separate enclosures for a month now. While Teddy has shown no obvious signs of depression, Ray has, which prompted me to find him a friend. However, seeing your video prompted me to get a friend for Teddy too. I have another pair of gerbils, littermates- Ozzie and Vinny and I see how wonderfully they get along and how tightly bonded they are. So, I feel guilty separating the bonded/littermate pups to bond them with my adult gerbils. Am I being silly? Do you think, I could try to re-bond Teddy and Ray and in turn, keep the pups together? Or is it too late for that as an option considering the time that has passed and that blood was drawn? I need to make a decision soon. What are your thoughts? Thanks!
@PetConnectionInternational
@PetConnectionInternational Год назад
Yes that's what I'm wondering, if it may be possible to rebond teddy and ray as the fight was only minor. It'd be a shame to split a bonded pair of pups, so it may be worth trying teddy and ray again just to see, a month apart and they should have mostly forgotten their scuffle now. I think it could be worth a go, but try and take it slowly, and include an extra wheel and double of everything as precaution if they bond. They may be a pair that needs very careful management possibly, if they do get together again, any tension between the two and it'd be worth sticking the divider in temporarily, even a few hours can be enough to let them cool off with some pairs If it doesn't work then you could try your new pups with them, and if they fail with teddy and rae you can always rebond them with each other, if they were bonded previously with no issues, it should be possible to rebond again with the split tank method 🙂 Then depending on why the other bondings failed we'd probably need to go back to the drawing board to figure out how to help teddy and rae. My instinct would be either a pair of young pups or a similar age chilled dude for teddy, and a single young (6 weeks ish) pup for Rae as he currently seems to be the aggressor, but that's just an idea for an alternative based on the current information we have on them

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I’m so glad I reached out to you. Your advice aligns with what my gut was telling me. I just needed your expertise to help me move forward in making a decision I could live with. Fingers crossed, with patience and time, the split tank helps Teddy and Ray re-bond. Once they return to sharing a home, I think I’ll hold off on adding a wheel until I feel confident that they are solid. And when I eventually add a wheel, I’ll add 2. I became a gerbil mom at 56 years old . I had no idea how much I’d fall in love with gerbils. Heather, Thank you for guiding me through this dilemma. I appreciate you! I’ll keep you posted 😊

Yes please do let me know how it goes, and I'll be here if you need any help at all along the way ☺️ You can also reach me in our Facebook group and website forum, and you can share photos/videos there too if you needed more help with anything 🙂 And I know what you mean about falling in love with them! I didn't even know gerbils were a thing until I came across Timon and Pumbaa at 25, and now I can't imagine my life without them 🥰

What if the lone gerbil is agressive and was pulled away because of that? Can they be repaired with another?

It could be worth trying with a different match, it's possible they were only aggressive because it was just a bad match. I'd try again with a really laid back gerbil and see if that makes a difference. It's also possible for a bond to still succeed even after they've been aggressive, as long as it wasn't severe fighting, Luna attacked Pumbaa initially, but they were later able to bond 🙂 I'd take it super slow though if you've seen aggressive behavior from them before, the slightest bit of tension or back arching and intervene, that's how I've done things with Luna because she has attacked before

Prey animals do tend to hide their feelings a lot, so do us humans in fairness 😅

Can the gerbils be both male? Both female? Is it better if they're siblings? Or should you have a male and a female but sterilize one or both? I'm used to rats but got inspired to rescue a gerbil someday after meeting a special case one named Simon, who recently passed away.

Yes, it's better if they're both the same gender to avoid the need for operations 🙂 and it's better to get them as a pair of siblings if possible, but they can be bonded later in life although this isn't always successful

Can make gerbils be housed together or is it on girls

Both males & females should be kept in pairs 🙂

so i take it that my old gerbil needs to be left alone, he fights every single gerbil we put him with every since his best friend passed away, so is there anything i can do about it?

How did you introduce him to the new gerbils? Did you follow the split tank method?
