@Drew I am sorry man. You stated some things that are true but then you made up conclusions that are simply false. Yes absolutely HLG is stored with the "Limited" vs "Full" metadata tags. However, that isn't the limiting factor for colors. The colorspace is what defines what colors are allowed. The REC.2020 colorspace of HLG VASTLY surpasses the REC.709 colorspace of Vlog-L and the linear profiles regardless of what luma ranges are utilized. Also Vlog-L is tagged as "Full" in the metadata. However, it is actually limited to about 128-~740 of luma values for 10 BIT Vlog-L. You stated it was using 0-255. That isn't even true for 8 BIT Vlog-L. Panasonic artificially limits it to 80% of the Luma values which in the case of 8 BIT Vlog-L is actually an issue in some cases. Your conclusions are actually the opposite of reality. You are applying either an incorrect LUT or applying a LUT incorrectly. I can't tell which it is until you release the LUT you are using. In your latest video you asked us to challenge you. I am not saying this to be mean or contradict you. I am simply stating a case for why this particular video is misleading people into some really bad practices. I could tell from your examples of HLG that YOU were crushing the black levels with the LUT. I hope you will take these comments as constructive criticism and I welcome any evidence that contradicts my statements. I could have made mistakes as well but I will stand behind what I have said until someone demonstrates otherwise.

+mpgxsvcd awesome. Can you send me the data regarding the color range. I can't find any white papers on it. All I can find is speculation so I went with what felt correct. Do I not mention the color space? If you take a 2020 image and attempt to work it on a rec 709 sequence without a transfer lut you are NOT taking advantage of that range of color. Further isn't the dr of hlg a strongly compressed curve? I understand working in 2020 but I see no advantage at all in working the wrong color space in 709. I was also at the end of the lens with exposure so how does one compensate for crushed blacks from hlg when there literally is no room to move them.
@LearningFast
@LearningFast 6 лет назад
There isn't a single white paper that gives you all of the information. You must use the Vlog White Paper which defines the curve up to 16 stops and then use Barry Green's "Vlog-L" paper to determine the bit value of the brightest bit that the GH5 can record. You can see that 4 stops above middle grey is about 740 on the Vlog-L chart. That is the maximum value that the GH5 can store for white in 10 BIT Vlog-L. The minimum value is 128 for 10 BIT Vlog-L. That only leaves about 612 BITs for 10 BIT Vlog-L as compared to HLG which uses up to (940-64) = 876. HLG uses about 30% more BITs than VLog-L and it can contain vastly more colors than Vlog-L because of the REC.2020 vs. REC.709 differences. Panasonic has never explicitly defined what 8 BIT Vlog-L is. They have only ever defined 10 and 12 BIT Vlog. However, you can infer from the papers that since 12 BIT Vlog is 4 times the values of 10 BIT Vlog that 8 BIT Vlog-L is 1/4 the values of 10 BIT Vlog-L. That would leave us with 32-185 with only 153 total BITs for 8 BIT Vlog-L. That is not many BITs and it is also why most people say don't use 8 BIT Vlog-L. I don't know why people insist on transforming HLG to REC.709. Just Render it to HLG HDR REC.2020 and upload it that way. It will display in both SDR and HDR. If you are truly looking for ultimate accuracy with SDR then you are best to use CineD or 10 BIT Vlog-L. Those are the two profiles that are made to achieve proper REC.709. You can force HLG into a REC.709 space but there are so many opportunities to mess things up that it isn't worth it. Here are links to the white papers. pro-av.panasonic.net/en/varicam/common/pdf/VARICAM_V-Log_V-Gamut.pdf www.panasonic.com/content/dam/Panasonic/cb/en/Business/AVCCAM/2015/AG-DVX200/VOL.%206%20-%20ENGLISH.pdf

Good job on clearing that up. I think that converting hlg to rec709 or any other color space is simply a matter of delivery - internet, tv, cinema etc. Hlg is tricky, you need a hdr device with hlg support to even see what's going on. I'm not sure how youtube treats hlg in, say, sRGB environment like PC. Correct me on that, but given HLGs superiour results when it comes to storing video data, It's better to use it as shooting profile. What is more in a true 32bit enviroment like Resolve, you could transform hlg to rec709 or rec2020 (applying only gamma curve conversion) using colourspace transform tool (not destructively with LUT) and in theory keep that juicy color information. Am I getting it right?
@mimotan
@mimotan 6 лет назад
Just an advice for CRFTSHO...maybe you'll reconsider what you said in this video. Shot something in log and HLG. Import both in Rezolve, and set them to full color range (in clip attributes). Then put on the hlg footage, on the first node, a color space transform (native openfx in davinci). set input as 2020 color space and Rec2100 HLG Gamma, and output to vlog and vgamut. set tone mapping to luminance mapping, and gamut mapping to saturation mapping. You will get an identical image to the original V-Log footage, with same DR, colors and other...
@CRFTSHO
@CRFTSHO 6 лет назад
mimotan but why go through all that trouble if you're finishing in rec 709? If doing HDR I'm way more partial to HDR10 over hlg.
@mimotan
@mimotan 6 лет назад
because v-log has the black point at around 128 and white point (only in vlog "L") at around 768...so youre not using the whole 10bit...youre more in a 9bit space. Not talking about the bitrate... In HLG you're using every bit of the full 10bit color space. Usefull for 709, hdr10 or any other finishing.
@CRFTSHO
@CRFTSHO 6 лет назад
We prefer, strongly, to use LOG for HDR10 as it to our scopes and eyes presents a better image in comparison the HLG.
@mimotan

CRFTSHO if youre scopes shows a better image, so a different image, after doing what I explained, you're definitely doing something wrong. I've seen others on yt arguing 8bit is better than 10bit, so this dispute is wasing time...and I'm sorry If You felt offended. That wasn't my purpose...I was just trying to help others get better results.

I know this video is a bit old but YOUR HLG footage is converted to Rec709. If you work with Rec2020 and HLG you can see it's much better and HLG and LOG both look so much better in Rec2020. Of course, LOG is better in Rec709 but Rec2020 is the way to go now and HLG is just so much easier to grade which you can use in live stream if you will, but LOG you can't use it, it's only for post-production. About the color space Rec2020 has more colors trust me. Not to mention you need an HDR monitor to see the difference, not sure you had one.
@QuicksilverSG

Sorry for the necro, but here's a tech note on your misconception @5:50. The reason HLG "color range" is "limited" is because it is ISO-specified for the broadcast-legal video range, which in 10-bit coding is 64-940, NOT the 8-bit 16-235 range you mentioned. This is not a reduction in color gamut, but a negligible reduction in color precision, because we're in 10-bit, not 8-bit where it can be significant. Not sure what the "full" color range claim is referring to on your v-log-l spec sheet, because in reality, the coding range of Panasonic's v-log-l is far more restricted than HLG. Unlike the full-spec v-log implementation in the GH6, the maximum range of v-log-l in both GH5 and GH5s is just 61% of full-scale (while the minimum level is at 7%). This gives you and effective v-log-l 10-bit coding range of 75-624, significantly less than HLG's 64-940 broadcast-legal range.

Keep in mind that Rec.709 has been widely implemented in a full and limited versions. Most HDTVs and monitors (or GPU software) allow for a limited Rec.709 at 16-255, mostly only affecting the lower end. Most of the HDTVs I've ever bought use the limited version as default.

Adam Johnson color space is a standard term used in video/film production. Color space is for instance CIE1931 or XYZ, etc. Then there is also color gamut, as in rec709, P3, etc. This are standard terms and usign them incorrectly just shows ignorance and lack of knowledge :)

Issue here is the LUT used to compare as seen many HLG videos showing great dynamic range and not crush like this, so LUT difference is an issue here.
@johnwilcox7826

HLG was never intended to be used for capturing video it is a delivery system The idea is to capture video in a wide dynamic mode ie LOG then export in HLG so that an HLG equipped TV can recover the Highlight and show the video in a greater dynamic range than REC709.
@DennisSchmitz
@DennisSchmitz 6 лет назад
Lol, put these files into Davinci Resolve and you'll see, there's basically no difference in dynamic range between Vlog and HLG. HLG uses a range of 64-940 where Vlog L only uses 74-814. HLG has a better tonality because of that.

You can test it yourself by recording in both formats then apply a color space transform in davinci after setting clips to full range. Apply the transform to the hlg to convert it to vlog. You will see both images are the same in terms of dynamic range.

Hi guys, I have been playing with HDR in Premiere since before the GH5 got HLG in its firmware so i dont know how long premiere has had the Rec.2020 color space but I can verify that it has at least had it for over a year now. All you have to do to switch from Rec.709 to Rec.2020 is import your clips, then right click Lumitri Color efect and select HDR at the bottom. At that point Premiere will change the entire timeline to Rec.2020 and you will see a bunch of HDR fetures become available. I hope this helps you guys. So far I have found it to be much faster to go from HLG 400mbps clips straight from the GH5, grade, then export to H.265 for upload to RU-vid in HDR with Premiere then I do in Final Cut or Resolve. You guys may want to try it out.

Like always in this crazy world, this topic is also sort of contrraversy. HLG is HDR, and that means high dynamic range Hybrid log gama is just best of both worlds.And you name it SDR , strange right? I thnk it is mention like limited color space, simply because your monitor is 709, if it is a HDR monitor or NLE , maybe picture will be different. And the whole story. Full color range on 10bit is 0-1023 (2^10) and not 0-255(that 8 bit 2^8), moreover unless you want banding is useless having crazy high dynamic range if you have only 10bit recording. Always remember 1 bit = 1 stop Even with the best profile you can't go against mathematics. Most amateur or "wanabe a video maker" have issues understanding this basic stuff.
@CRFTSHO

I'm not sure I follow you here...who's a wannabe filmmaker? I'd just say get the shot. In the end all that matters is story and if the technical minutiae prohibits the execution of said story the issue is either artist internal (novice) or external (poor planning). Just remember none of the tech matters if you can't use it to better tell a story. 😁

@dan_hitchman007
@dan_hitchman007 5 лет назад
Normally, that's the case, but for some consumer or prosumer cameras being used in a fully pro setting, the HLG profile is supposedly eeking out the most color and dynamic range from the camera sensor since their LOG settings are gimped in some way. HLG in some of these "lowly" cameras (like the GH5 and GHs) also use the full 10 bit video data (as most in this range don't have 12 bit or 14 bit depth). If you're careful in your workflow, HLG can be used as a base for other video formats. Now, this is not the case for all cameras and the better the specs on a particular make and model, the more you can then rely on LOG and RAW for pure footage capture and then transform them to any other final deliverable format, including HLG.

@@dan_hitchman007 Thank you for your most informative reply. The past 2 years I shot almost everything in vlog lite with GH5, a cameraman told me I had to film in this v log (lite) profile. It is indeed 'flexible' and has 'ok' dynamic range but colors (especially skin tones) are very hard to grade. I allways thought this is because of me being inexperienced in color grading, and that hiring a professional colorist could resolve this issue. Even then, I am worried about this, because grading RAW stills from the same GH5 sensor shows much more flexibility and better colors. But now, if I understand correctly, you are suggesting v log in 'lowly' GH camera's just isn't good enough, and I conclude HLG 10-bit would approach the colors (from RAW stills) more? Is this because v log lite is limited in REC 709, and HLG is BT2020 (camera=GH5).

Hi can someone help me? I just bought my GH5S recently and I'm basically amateur when it comes to this. Anyway, I'm confused when it comes to shooting VLog since I guess I dont understand it as I thought I did. Is it something you put over while editing or after recording? Or is it something you must turn on before recording? I checked on my camera settings and it has an option for VLog-L view assist which is I cant not turn on for some reason!
@TheTechnoPilot
@TheTechnoPilot 5 лет назад
V-Log is an optional paid extra for the GH line that is effectively replicating shooting in a digital version of a film negative, storing the values of luminance in a logarithmic way instead of linearly meaning that each stop of dynamic range occupies a similar amount of data across the entire luminance range (a stop in the shadows uses the same amount of values as a stop in the highlights). It essentially maximises the output of the sensor and records it in an as close to the raw unprocessed image as possible without it being actual RAW. Basically, it means doing all the work to process the image in post instead of letting the camera create a near-final image.
