I have been running tests in Resolve for color management. I've found that if you use the Davinci YRGB Color managed workflow properly, resolve can automatically convert HLG to rec709 but still keep anything in the project that is already rec709 untouched. Handy if you are working with a lot of footage shot in a variety of profiles.

Super video. Most informative breakdown of this subject I've found so far. Though I'm still trying to make sense of some aspects, specifically the point of using it compared to V-LOG if exporting in REC709. Excellent info though.

I think the only time I'd use it is if I was trying to match other cameras. Might be easier to set them all to HLG. I'm not a colorist though so maybe that wouldn't matter too much either.

I have been converting the HLG profile to rec709 in Resolve by going in Color Space Transformation setting in the node section and choosing Input colour space as Panasonic V-Gamut and input gamma according to the exposure. Then choosing output colour space and output gamma as Rec709. It does the job but I am not sure if that's the right way. Let me know, what you think. Cheers Adi

*Hey Dustin ! Your explanation of HLG & HDR made more sense than many other presentations I have watched online. I'm still struggling enormously trying to wrap my head around HDR. Exposing for HDR (Any friggin' HDR) is so utterly confusing, counter-intuitive, and not an exact science, as to leave the rational videographer longing for IRE 7.5 to 235 and an 18 % Grey card !!! Did you know you can use an Atomos Ninja V Monitor/Recorder as a calibrated HDR monitor for HLG and HDR grading in Avid Media Composer, Davinci Resolve, or Final Cut Pro X ? Everyone seems to forget the Ninja V mini monitor is a calibrated HDR capable monitor.*
@DustinArmstrongPro
@DustinArmstrongPro 3 года назад
I'm glad that I did it justice! I did a lot of research because I didn't know much about it. I'm not really sure since I have 0 experience with HDR, but I'd assume it's similar to exposing for SDR but I could be completely wrong. I'll have to look more into it. That's good to know. I actually don't own a Ninja V haha
@markjob6354
@markjob6354 3 года назад
@@DustinArmstrongPro No it's definitely not simular to exposing for SDR. This is the problem and the point at which HDR shooting becomes counter-intuitive. You should shoot two stops over exposed for HLG and 3 stops over (Read Wash Out)for HDR PQ (HDR 10). You're totally screwed anyway without a properly calibrated HDR Monitor, that's why you can camera monitor and realtime record with the Ninja V in HDR PQ or HLG. When in these modes your wave form and vector scopes really change as well. It throws a guy like me, who's trained for North American NTSC Broadcast @ Wave Form 7.5 IRE (Darkest Black) and 235 IRE (Brightest highlights). IRE = Stands for Institution of Radio Engineers.

Very interesting! Thank you for making this. I am using a ninja V and find it very frustrating that there's so little information out there about all this. Theres an option there to use HLG and something they call PQ, I have no idea what it means, and what it is used for, and have had a hard time to find information about it.
@DustinArmstrongPro
@DustinArmstrongPro 4 года назад
PQ stands for perceptual quantizer. From what I learned, PQ is a electro optical transfer function for HDR which basically just means it's a fancy mathematic equation or set of instructions that translates voltages and digital values into brightness values on a display. I believe it's the gamma curve for translating a set of 10 bit, or 12 bit per channel digital values into a brightness range of 0.0001 to 10,000 nits. I'm pretty sure it's the gamma curve that HDR 10 and Dolby Vision use, which is what makes it not compatible on an SDR display because SDR uses a brightness range (gamma 2.4) of 0.01-100 nits. Hopefully that makes sense and is correct lol. I didn't want to get too complicated in the video just in case I wasn't correct.

@JonPais

Laci Kobulsky you want to ETTR for SDR
@DustinArmstrongPro
@DustinArmstrongPro 4 года назад
ETTR means expose to the right so yes. You want to overexpose, but only just before your highlights clip. There are scenarios though where maybe you don't care if your highlights clip (window in the background, the sun, etc) you still overexpose. The reason you overexpose is it helps reduce noise in the shadows.

@@DustinArmstrongPro thanks, I am aware of that for VLOG but was told to keep HLG around 0 EV (by Dennis)
@DustinArmstrongPro

He could be referring to his LUT in particular, but I could be wrong. I believe in a lot of cases HLG will most likely be around 0 EV anyways before your highlights clip.

I just noticed that when I switched to HLG on my GH5, I somehow lost two whole stops of light according to the waveform! Why is that? And that should be a dealbreaker, right? Can I trust the waveform monitor when using HLG? Or is there another way of reading it than the "regular" rec709-color profiles?

HLD is amaizing if you have an HDR monitor and you set it to HDR. its kills everthing ealse. most peapole just try to use SDR monitors while shooting HLD. huge mistake. i have AUSUS OLED LAPTOP with HDR suport. so i just copy pase from my sony camera and play it. Amazing. editing in promier pro require zero effort, just export it corectly and play it with media players that suport HDR. Also in windows setting dont forget to toggle "HDR on"

@DustinArmstrongPro
@DustinArmstrongPro 4 года назад
Personally haven't tested it, but from what I see there isn't a huge difference. The S1H has dual ISO and that helps a ton with noise at higher ISOs. I plan to make a video in the future

@DustinArmstrongPro
@DustinArmstrongPro 4 года назад
No problem! You do get rolling shutter in either profile. Picture profiles have little to do with rolling shutter just so you know. But I've used both in low light and they both do well because the S1H has dual ISO so at higher ISOs you still get minimal noise

The camera picture profile is irrelevant and should output whatever you choose. Typically only frame rate and resolution are the limitations when it comes to output.

Hi, thanks for your video. I'd like to ask you about Davinci Resolve transformation. When we are converting the color space, you said input rec2100, Im using the same method but choosing rec2020 gamma 2.4. I'm wrong selecting the input color space? With rec2100 seems to me that produce overexposed higliths meanwhile rec2020 seems better in colors and highlights but maybe Im doing something wrong. You can try with ACES to INPUT rec2020 (rec2100 not appear) and OUT rec709, colors boom!
@DustinArmstrongPro
@DustinArmstrongPro 4 года назад
I haven't actually tested it since I don't have the studio version of Resolve, but I don't think you're wrong using Rec2020. I need to brush up a bit more on the difference, but I'm pretty sure they are still the same color space. Don't quote me on it. Whatever works for you, keep doing that
