Can Holley Dominator Carbs be Streetable??? How To.. plus I drive Casper to see

Today I look taming my Holley Dominator Carburetors for the street on MIXED UP BOSS!
In my first test drive the throttle was like an on/off switch and I could tell by the sound the engine was running very rich.
I dive into the carbs to trim fuel from the Idle Feed Restrictor circuit in an attempt to correct this over rich condition.
after I finish up the Carbs I head over to David Vizard's house to let him see Casper for the first time with MIXED UP BOSS installed and running...

a few thoughts from my experience with my t-ram setup. I would have used 2 circuit carbs, also drill and tap a piece of 1/4" plate to hold your idle jet blanks when you drill them. Also some power drills will hold the tiny drill bits.

I usually drop the idle restrictors down to about .030 and increase the air bleeds to about .075 as a start with 2 Dominators, you may have to go even leaner if you have decent idle vacuum. 4500's are notorious for being set up for less than 3" of vacuum and a very high idle fuel rates. The idle restrictors below fuel level are far more responsive to changes as well. On your throttle issue, build a quadrant style cable setup. That makes a massive difference in drivability. Your transitions to other circuits is a bit harder to explain, and will be different on every setup. A wide band really helps with that. It takes a while to set up that many Smiles per Gallon. 😀

I have a vintage 4500 Holley 1050CFM Dominator #9375 that has not only vacuum ports but, a mechanical choke on it. It was on a C454 Edelbrock intake. So? YES a Dominator can be "streetable".

What a fun ride! I put a large monoblade throttle body and tunnel ram on my Mustang. Rips down the track but took me quite a few years/seasons of tuning to get the idle and part throttle liveable on the street. No stalling, except when it's cold and I'm in a rush to get going, haha. Of course now that I say this, I'm switching over to race gas and will need to tune that and start the process over again. Very interesting carb design. When DV is smiling, you know you're on the right track!

I would say from my limited tuning that DV is on to something about those "small bird filters" you have on top. Check the size of the holes and multiply that by the number of holes. That is a giant choke in the airflow and you will never be able to tune it right until they are changed out for a non restrictive filter. Basically driving with the choke on. O2 sensors and AFR will let you know. Get them installed and then do back to back test with and without the "small bird filters" and that should tell you something.

I dont have a lot or very little experience with those carbs . A long time ago I helped a friend with his bracket car . It had a 427 chev. Glide , Ford 10inch in a 67 camaro . We took it to the nationals and the engine was not running properly.. I pulled the 1050 off it and carried it to the Holly tech booth . He had a stack of 2.5 power valves. Gaskets ect . He installed the 2.5 Powe valve. Set the float bowls. Reassemble the carb. We were parked by a fellow that had a record holding hemi . He told me to pull those plugs and install a set of autolite . So I got a set for the aluminum heads in the 427 . Got lucky and won that day . So I used what I learned and used that information on my 302 chev camaro . 4 speed car . My street hot rod . Thanks for sharing your experience

As a friendly reminder Andy, I also look forward to that Progression Ignition video review. The truck seems like it is running good so I'm sure the review on the distributor will be good also. You used a tiny drill for modifying the carbs. - Are these the ones David Vizard used to drill a hole in the spark plug electrodes? ...that he discribed in one of his video's. After, or before, he rounded the ground electrode so that the spark would always be at that point. Funny moment you with David saying 'You would be suprised how much restriction these filters give when dyno'ed' ...haha 😝

Always fun to see carburator videos. I seems the control rod moves the linkage from about 9 o'clock to 12 o'clock. Would it not be better if it moved it from 12 o'clock to 3 o'clock? Just like the linkage up to the Dominators? Some Kawasaki moorcycles has the same spark plug and water problem and the solution is to fill around the spark with grease. :) DV was very polite when commenting the "Air filters", but I am sure he was VERY disapointed that you drive it without a huge K&N or two.

Great stuff Andy. DV was like a kid in a toy store...lol. I had to laugh at your intro, sorting out the carby's, "stay tuned" 🤣 😂 😆. My money is on Uncle Tony. Unless you get the slicks off a funny car, you're going to blow the tyres off ... 🤣 😂 glad to see the improvements. Just looking at the video, and the pedal response. The throttle looks very aggressive on initial movement. If you can, try lengthening the vertical link to the carby's, then adjust the pedal linkage to suit. By bringing the transfer arm around a little you will get away from the initial straight line pull, and more into an arc movement. That should help tone down the aggressive initial pedal action. Regards Greg

4:18 if you reclock your throttle arm(the one your return springs are on) so it is almost vertical it will give it a lot better feel and reduce how much the throttle blades move per amount your foot moves. if you want data I highly recommend the stand alone Banks I dash. I sell RPM dataloggers as a dealer for years and I have used Corsa and Autometer Race Paks and for a street vehicle the wiring and amount of data the datamonster can do is way better than the others. You could have datalogged that entire trip to Davids house and back no problem then gone back and found that spot where it felt like it wanted to die and see what was going on there.

Not familiar with effects of intermediate passage. What is benefit over just idle and high circuits? Is it even more fuel over a two circuit? I do like 4 corner idle since it can be tuned to smaller IFR’s for cleaner plugs. But I only have one Quick Fuel on the street. My QF was real rich IFR now at .025” at all 4 corners and a .086” transition slot restriction all is good. This is in conjunction with reduced emulsions, .040” PVR and smaller jets front and rear. Enjoyed your presentation, please continue this tuning procedure.

We run dominators on more stuff than we'll admit, you'll get 'em sharp and crisp - two gallons of fuel at a time! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

kind of surprised you didn't go with modern billet metering blocks where every controllable orifice hole is threaded for easy tuning changes. also, drill bits are ok, but for precision orifice measurements, should invest in a pin gauge set, which are way more accurate than drill bits

I'm looking forward to seeing you take Tony's money. I like to calculate jet size changes by area. Unfortunately the length of the hole comes into play as well. BTW Casper looks Perfect!!!

It won't be hard to take utg money with the junk he's working with, the question is will he pay up when he loses?

@@hughgerection8675 Yeah, there is NOTHING impressive about UT or his way of doing things. I started watching his channel in Hope's of gaining some Mopar nuances but what I seen was a bunch of Hackery lack of any finesse and then the drama started, then I stopped watching......

Its no different really, as long as you have bleeds in each circuit- you will be fine. would have been nice to do your cylinder jetting on the dyno, that is, if you didn't.

It looks vintage cool, but why would one want that much carburetors on the street. Too much troubles and drivability issues as you pointed out. A single carb power wise is more than sufficient for the traction available on the street. A groomed drag strip is where this could shine. But well tuned LS is gonna clean your shorts on the street. The “old man” is hauling ass with a lot less in a 421 SBC and is streetable. The question remains what is “true street”. You are one of the few that really understands IFR, IAB, and PVR, etc that I’ve found on the inter web. There are couple guys on the HotRod site that get in to real tuning I’ve had discussions with. I mostly find out of the box everything is way way too rich. Totally different orifaces size calibrations today from in the 60’s. Thank you for sharing.
