Neat little detail: it seems like there's a mod applied that let's the tachometer behave like a chronomatic one: it updates the rpm every 0.6 sec. so instead of it moving around smoothly.. it 'ticks'..

I've driven a super light single seater with no aero and without a lot of modern sticky tire. That is living! Driving a high horsepower version of the same? That is an exercise in trying not to die ... it takes some kind of freak to be able to get to 10/10ths in a car like that and stay there. And Jim Clark is one of a very short list of the best of the best ever at it.

You are correct, Jim Clark was probably the best driver ever, given the circumstances. He actually raced in multiple championships in different countries simultaneously, back in his day that meant like 8 stops to get to Australia, and then hop on a plane to get to Europe again....crazy!

And speaking of Jackie Stewart, his race on 1968 at this track was also a memorable one. It was a wet race too. I mean he made a 34 second lead in the first lap after starting on 6th place and won the race with a gap of 4 minutes from the second place finisher.

The Jacky Stewart race that you mentioned was not only in the wet, but he had a broken wrist as well! 1960s F1 car with no downforce, torrential rain, one of the most difficult and dangerous tracks in the world and a broken wrist. Jacky is a very much underrated 3 time world champion!

I have a distinct memory of doing an 8:22 in this car in GPL all those years ago. If I went even faster, I can't remember it, but I doubt it, I was not a fast driver. I'm impressed that you can get into the 8:30s with so little practice. Jim Clark was a freak!

Fun fact Jimmy: The part where you get airborne in the first sector is not the Flugplatz, but actually Quiddelbacher Höhe. The Flugplats is the short straight following the subsequent right hander. And the compression after Aremberg is called "Fuchsröhre" (Fox hole). Great video, love this 1960's stuff. Brings me back to the GPL days and the amount of laps I fucked up in that final chicane.

larreization Yep. Thats one of the most common misconceptions about the Nurburgring, probably because of the law nature of touristfarhten, where the track is considered public road, reason for that being purely allowing anyone with road going vehicle to enter without a helmet. Also, while it was never inteded to be used as a public road, when they built the track back in 20’s, their idea was to replicate the topography of the toughest roads, in order to replicate the most difficult of conditions in a “safe” invorement. So that might be the other source of misconception. But yes, it was never a public road.

But it second purpose, beside beeing a racetrack, was to be a testtrack for the german car manufacturers. It was never a public road, but it was build like a country road, so cars in developement could be driven at the limit, in an environment close to their later intended use.

small tip for the old f-1 cars: they handle like 90's togue cars. the fastest way thru a corner is just the slightest bit sideways. basically you want to use the front end to direct the car and the rear to push it thru like drifting, but with less angle so you force more speed than what the tires are normally capable of. that's how I get speed out of these and other classic f-1, f-2, and f-3 cars (mostly the Lotus type 25 Climax and 49 Cosworth)

I agree with you Jimmy. Jim Clark was (STILL IS) one of the greatest drivers of the history of auto-racing, in particullary i put him into the top 3 F1 drivers ever, alongside Schumi and Ayrton for pure talent, regardless the achievements. Maybe only my fellow countryman Alberto Ascari had the same amount of talent

The default setup of that car in AC has a lot to be desired. I've found stiffing it up a lot front and rear helps and aiming for -1.5 toe front, +1.0 toe rear also helps.

You need BRM P115 with ... 6 gears 16 cylinders and a nice walnut burr dashboard, snazzy tartan seats and a little switch for the oil slick spray. And another for the smoke cloud dropper...And a pedal for the transmission cruncher... and a big stick on the left to maximise the engine vibrations on both of the crank shafts.

You'd definitely get brake fade on old F1 cars, they ran disks so it wouldn't be as bad as drums but brake pad material wasn't very good and you'd almost certainly risk boiling the brake fluid at times (spongy pedal). Modern carbon ceramic disks and advanced pads make brake fade less of an issue but it's still something similar to tyres in that they will get progressively worse with more usage.

I’m pretty sure the brake fade mod you mentioned comes with the 1955 f1 mod for gpl. I could be wrong but I do know the 1955 mod has a brake fade indicator in the car with green being good, yellow meaning it’s fading, and red meaning you have no brakes left. No the cars back in those days did not have such a device as the drivers had to tell either by smell or taking a glance at the brakes but obv we can’t do that in game so it helps a lot. JIM CLARK - By far the greatest driver ever - no doubt. He is and was "The Best of the Best" (Fangio, Senna, Prost, Stewart and countless others about Clark). No other driver in history until today was so superior as Clark - No other driver as so much "Grand Slam" - Pole/Win/Fastest Lap/Leading every lap of the race - like him. And all that from just 72 starts... ! This man is the Olymp of driving - the Michelangelo of racing - a dynamic art at the highest level. So smooth, so precise, so fast....simply out of this world. One, who won in Spa by 5 minutes (!) in monsoon rain with only one hand at the wheel (!) because of gearbox trouble...One, who takes back a complete lap (!) in Monza and back into the lead... One, who took pole on the original 22,8 km Nürburgring track by 9 (!) seconds and more....One who won Indy by 2 whole (!) laps...For eternity and by lightyears unmatched in the sport. That`s just four examples of his mesmeric unique genius...

Tried the same on Project Cars 2, and I can assure, that machine activelly tries to kill you. Piece of advise, Jimmer, if you want to be really fast on that car, there's a technique for that. It's more of a philosophy thing. Like Gilles Villeneuve said, "if everything is under control, you're not going fast enough". So don't try to go straight. Just point the nose in the direction of the exit of the curve, press the throttle kinda gently, have a litle battle with the wheel, and PRAY. What makes every pilot of that time a really great, is that death was a real thing that you could actually see. Four to six drivers died every year trying to be that fast. I really hope to see you beating that time, and i'd love to see how many times you "die" trying. Cheers!

This is Grand Prix Legends....fully modded.... thats awesome! I also have to add.... Dan Gurney came within 2 laps of winning this race in '67, he broke a U-joint. There is a Jim Clark connection there....Dan Gurney was the only driver Jimmy feared.

Dont forget the US stuff. Indy 500 five times winning once and coming second twice. Then there is his little known 1959 1.5L class podium at Le Mans. You mentioned F2. In '65 he won both The F1 world championship plus the British AND French F2 titles. He was also British touring car champ in two classes that year, the same year he won the Indy 500. ANDThe Tasman series. Just those towering achievements in 65 mean that in my mind he was the best driver of all time. Fangio certainly said so. Then there are all his other race wins, podiums and pole positions, championship top 3's and let's not forget, he started out as a rally driver.......... Legend! Smooth, fast and humble to a fault. Cool AF on the style front too. Who else has ever made a buttoned up polo shirt and a cardigan could look so good?

They feel like they're floating. I'm in my 60's I got to do a 8 laps at Laguna Seca here in Cali in 1976 in a 72 lotus F-1 which had some wing and areo and even more HP. Even with the limited downforce you had a lot of air time and the car would literally feel like it was floating. you steered with your hands and right foot but you drove with yer ass. She'd try and get side ways on you every time you throttled up. I've never driven that fast that close to edge since. The sims do get the right feel.. twitchy is an understatement.

How amazing was Clark? He started racing at 20 years old. He went pro in F1 four years later and was World Champion three years after that. His cars exhibited less wear and tear than his team mates' same cars.

I used to drive this same car/track combination in rFactor quite a lot few years ago. Managed to do a sub-8 minute lap once, but I had at least couple hundred laps total done at that point lol. The modern Nordschleife has felt so easy and neutered in every game after driving on this old version, the track is so much more bumpy, the kerbs are so much bigger, some corners are sharper and many more jumps. Also the fact that there's no armco makes it so much more extreme, even though your life is not on the line.

nice vid jeemer i see in the vid that the tachometer is quite laggy, if you use shader patch and content manager you can fix it by disabling the "enhanced tachometer" in the shader patch options.

i believe the main problem with comparing driving in sims and driving IRL is the grip discrepancy. IRL the car you drive everyday has so much grip, i can go through a 100 degree turn at over 90 miles per hour in my little kia forte with tires that are 165/55r15, with no loss of grip, but god forbid i drive with the same sized tires and go through the same 100 degree corner in a game and the car spins out.

Bias-ply tires just take forever to heat up. Do like 10 warmup laps, and you might be able to get some heat into the tires.

I almost beat that lap time in Grand Prix Legends, back in the day. Had a 8:04.8 in the Lotus 49.

@@nogrippt Never broke the 8:00 mark back then. I was actually more proud of the 8:14 and change in the BRM than the 8:04 with the Lotus.

I'd love to see you do a lap in a car from this era after hundreds of laps in the car, just to see what you could do when you have confidence in the car. Drive it on the modern Nordschleife if you wish, it's the car I'm interested in. :)

I love to drive those cars. I lost the count of the laps I did in Spa in rFactor2. Driving this in real life in a competition environment? Not enough money in the world.

Hey Jimmer, I am not sure if there are some mods for it but I would really love to see you do a few laps or just drive the so called "Steilstrecke" :) It is going from under the "Karussell" Up to the "Hohe Acht" and it would be amazing to see a video from you if there is a mod xD I really love your Videos and just stay as you are

I used to play Gran Prix Legends (many years ago) and I recall the key to lap times was drifting. Lots of sliding. Of course it took and hour to complete a lap :). Zandy and Monza were epic tracks. Monaco was impossible
