You asked for opinions so here’s a couple of tips for ballpoint portraiture realism that I’ve learnt as a freelance portrait artist using only ballpoints (I have been doing this for over 5 years now): try to avoid hard outlines, particularly for features other than eyes/eyelids, nostrils and eyebrow hairs; your best friend for realism is fine cross hatching and layering and alternating the directions of this; start off with a light foundation and build upwards because pen cannot be undone, this also creates a softness that allows you to blend easily between shade and highlights; to avoid unwanted clumps of ink, keep a scrap piece of paper or even regular tissue and roll off your pen after each time you take your hand away from the page for more than a couple of seconds; this prevents the ink gathering at the ball and producing a splodge (for want of a better word) when you touch the pen down again, this is particularly important for when you’re working on highlights and lighter areas and also hair. If you’ve read all of this, I hope it’s useful to you 😄 have a nice day!
Serious question, how long does one of these drawings take for your ball point portraits? Is there anywhere online you can recommend to be able to learn this style of drawing?
Michael Carlton My portraits can take anywhere up to 4 weeks to complete because of their size, for me this also depends on the hair length/style/type, skin (as darker skin colours take more layers to build up) and also any clothing/accessories that are being worn. I would recommend just having a look around RU-vid and observe the techniques of artists, there are also many good ballpoint artists on Instagram (@/oscarukonu and @/samiadagher are amazing examples to observe) 😄👍
also carefully using slightly damped cottonswap with fine eaven crosshatching you can get beautyful blending and smoother look! My self i use really hard pencil to sctech and not do any line work with ballpoint pen, just hard shadows where its needed. Patience and layering is the key ; )
am I the only one, who can imagine Jazza running happily to his wife, wanting to show her his new drawing and being mad when she pulls it off the fridge after a week
Bro fr like some artist just hydro dip or shoe custom or do one main thing but no not jazza he dose well all of them and is more then perfect with whatever he dose he's born an artist like imagine little jazza. Jazza don't color on wall. Jazza mom walks in. Gasps at Mona Lisa on sons wall😂😂😂😂
This reminds me of a project we had to do in one of my High school art classes. It was an “empty the pen” drawing, where we had to empty one pen in a single drawing. Could make for a cool video! :D
I'm gonna be that guy and say while the left eye is fine, the right eye isn't positioned correctly. I instantly noticed this because the eyes in a portrait are one of the most important features you have to get right, because more often than not that's where most peoples eyes go to first. That's not to say it isn't a good portrait, since it is amazing that this was done with a ballpoint pen, but there is room for improvement.
the right eye is drooped down a bit, which is not... really... okay, at all, the eyes are the things that you need to get right, theyre the first things you look at on a portrait, eyes are something that you need to get down pat, otherwise the drawing won't look right, i do this weird thing where i use a ruler to get eye size and spacing right, but it works, if you dont wanna do that it's fine, there are many ways to make sure your eyes look symmetrical and detailed, so please use them, otherwise its gonna muck up your work
The hardest thing about capturing realism, especially for someone who is mostly an illustrator, is the tendency to concentrate too much on the edges of the subjects. In reality, nothing has a distinct edge, especially a biological/organic structure. Rather, they curve away from or towards the viewer, and are never a hard edge with as much contrast as we have an inclination to draw them with. This is hard to capture in a realistic way with many mediums.
The edges we see are a byproduct of the image processing our brains perform to identify objects from the background. It's a neat little trick...algorithm inside of our brains. From an optical perspective, our eyes have a focal length of about 50mm with optical distortions. Our brains perform error correction and processing to fix this. We also have two eyes which are actually too close to create real stereoscopic view, but our brains use the ever slight differences and processing to create our binocular view. I could go on and on, but the key to realistic art on a 2D surface is to fool our brains into believing it has 3D depth and it isn't a flat image. Of course, in some cases you want a flat image in the case of illustration.
skillashare cons: you have to buy it monthly youtube cons: ads that the person can put multiple in, it could be clickbait, youtube doesnt care about the user, and the person can drag the vid longer than ten minutes
Cool story: when I went to school we had to do an ink-drawing of a painting for homework. I didn't know she meant for us to use actual ink and a brush, but because we didn't have it, I used a ball pen instead, because it's technically also ink and I knew they couldn't give me a bad grade for it. When I turned it in, the teacher, who was like a down-to-earth artist type, praised my creative take on the assignment and I honestly still feel proud about it.
@@talnev.7894 My design professor made us draw our designs top to bottom...So, not only did we create something that doesn't exist, we drew it upside down..
Good luck with learning ballpoint, my guy! I've been using it for awhile and it's very nice once you get used to it, and the contrast and durability of the piece it allows for makes pens much better for sketching than pencils!
@@ksenyaandtheartisticcucumb1958 ballpoint has so much ink lol I like how consistent or inconsistent it can get bc it adds for more creativity. It’s a stress reliever.
The first drawing is my favorite. I love how realistic it looks, while the use of the pen gives it a hint of a whimsical/personal feel. 10/10 would put one or even a series done in that style on my wall.
It’s really awesome, but I wouldn’t call it realism. As much as I like the drawing, it’s still too stylized to be realistic. Again, I really like it, in fact it’s also my favorite. Still, a very fun drawing.
@@fluffypotatocow8490 ahh yes I remember now, thanks!😂😂😁time to binge all weekend and find it😂 Well I was thinking like a standard art eraser, and then using a subtractive process carve something 😂
I’ve always adored sketchy pen/ink drawings, both realistic, cartoony, and everything in-between. You captured the free spirited nature of the ball point pen ❤️
@@ryley190 im one of those some people. i just learned that kind of mistake when i bought a very expensive tablet that it didnt even improved my art *cries in patience and perseverance*
Same, except I also have have greyscale with my wind down mode, so it's kinda hard to watch "relaxing art videos" ... And like button blue is the same shad of grey ut was before I press it, same with the Reddit upvote buttons ;^;
Dr. Dragon well in comparison to noobs at art, he’s really good at realism but maybe not compared to experienced artists that specifically focus on realism or something I’m not really sure so sorry if I got something wrong
That would actually be a pretty cool video. Shade in the whole page with pencil and then draw the image with erasers. I've used a similar technique with clouds, so why not a whole drawing.
I legitimately love watching accomplished artists work on things that they know they're not the best at and showing that they're still working to improve
I don’t know if I would call most of this realism. The first is too stylized, the second is an alright attempt, but the third is almost cartoonish(OBVIOUSLY an exaggeration, but still....). I will say, the less realistic style of the first definitely made it better.
The cabin was absolutely immaculate. The face is really really amazing. Monster usb thing was pretty good. Not like I could do better but it’s still pretty decent
Cheap ballpoint pens are actually my favorite tool to sketch with! They make you really really aware of the way you use your lines. I found myself using my lines much more efficiently when i got back into pencil. I highly recommend trying it! Edit: it also helps a lot with learning about values.
Never in a video have I ever wanted to get together with the creator and show them something. I have spent nearly 12 years working with ball point pen and there are some really easy tricks that, would make your already wonderful art, super smooth and contrasted and even more realistic. They are so simple, that just a chat on the phone, and you could master them. You are awesome, thanks for inspiring me to continue to branch out my own art. You are so great!
Jazza: it feels like I'm standing at the fence of an abandoned log cabin in the woods. It's really quite nice! Every horror movie ever: You sure about that?
9:29, in my art class a couple years ago, the teacher made us flip the picture upside down to avoid drawing what we think and it actually turned out half decent!
I actually understood what you were trying to say about not drawing an eye, but drawing all of the different tones that are in the eye. That's basically how I do realism. I look at the face not like it's a face, but a collection of different shades of colours and shapes.
His point about drawing what you actually see instead of what you think you see is actually really important. I’m a first year in architecture school and we’ve spent two weeks learning to draw like that
One way that i was taught in school to draw things especially faces to avoid drawing what u think u know is drawing thinhs upside down.... Also think it would make a great video
how youtuber’s intend the comment section to be like: “Let me know in the comments down below.” The comments: Is no one gonna talk about how savage jazza is
I never would have thought of ballpoint pen as a challenge, considering how much I really like using them for sketching, but I'm glad Jazza stuck his hands in. I love this sort of style with a ballpoint, and he did a damn good job!
Recently been grinding drawing. Honestly, I've been trying a lot of different things, content creation, coding, drawing, and I enjoy them. There are people who are so much better than me at these things, it's crazy. I feel obsolete. It's amazing how far someone can go. And you are one of those people. The more I draw, the more I see your talent and how practiced you are and how much room I have to grow. You're a good person, talented, awesome and a huge inspiration. Thank you.
@Alex Lohrey me too lol. sorry it wasnt clear. i was joking that he cant make bad art so that means he cant do everything because he can make only good art
My little sister: "what are you watching?" Me: "A pen drawing challenge" Her: * glances at screen * "why's the drawing all black?" Me: "cause it's pen..." Her: "is he famous?" Me: "I mean... 25,000 people watched this in a half hour, and he has over 5 million subscribers, so yeah." Her: * Looks at my screen, sees drawing, eyes widen * "Woooowwww...... I think he's gonna win that challenge...."
I personally love drawing realistic with a ball pen - it is so unique looking and it always amazes me how much you can do without an eraser, with one tip, one ink, one colour. It also isn't pressuring you that way to make it anywhere perfect or super realistic.
I had a friend in high school basically draw cartoons or landscapes on the back of tests or on worksheets. We would get marked down for it because out school tried to teach professionalisms. 🙄 but even the strictest teacher didn’t have the heart to mark her paper down. Her drawings were beautiful.
I’m not an artist by any means what so ever but ball point pens are one of my favorite art supply’s. I love the rustic look I love that hatch shading. It’s so real and I love it so much
Jazza: I am going to try my hand at realism *Continues to draw dragon demon face* Yes I know that he was trying to accurately draw the dragon but... You know what I mean
Jazza: does something for the first time ever and it looks like he’s been doing it for years Me: does the same thing for the first time and it looks like I drew it blindfolded with my non-dominant hand.
It's interesting seeing him attempt "realism" with a ballpoint and still getting a bit cartoon-ish in the first one. I used to make realism drawings with ballpoint all the time, but I preferred BicStick (specifically the semi-opaque gray ones).
he's literally a professional artist, most people didn't spend more than half of their lives drawing, painting and animating. In all honestly, no, realism isn't something he's InCrEdiBle at. But he's willing to try and practice and challenge himself and that's where his strength's at. A finished artwork is better than an unfinished masterpiece.
Drawing with pens are just the best. You get an experience of complete pain trying to erase something that obviously cant be erased and happiness when you realize it can be slightly blended and improvise instead.
This is pretty great Jazza. I love drawing with a pen. I suck, but I enjoy it. Having the ability to erase taken away really helped me commit to the line and it's improved my drawing overall.
JAZZA! You should buy and old DSI and play with the included “Flipnote” app! It’d be awesome to unlock a distant memory in a lot of your viewers and add your own jazza spin to it!
Am I the only one amazed at how he can draw a whole drawing with a ballpoint pen when I can barley get through a sentence without it running out of ink
