Hello everyone,
In the first of my American Adventures I stumble upon a car, seemingly abandoned in the woodlands of North Carolina.
My obvious reaction is - will it start?

@gosportjamie

I'm with Lawrie, I don't understand the point of side post batteries. They remind me of the awful battery connectors that Ford in the UK used to use that would allow one electron at a time through, if they turned sideways and breathed in rather a lot. Not really ideal for starting anything, and particularly not an older Ford which were not generally the best starters anyway...

Ah, now that's some good fun right there! For the record, I don't believe that many old American cars tend to start without issue after being abandoned for many years... you just got awful lucky! Though, seeing you delighted over this old truck reminds me of a location I think you'd rather enjoy... There was this fellow who presumably had some cash on his hands, around the time that a lot of municipalities in some of the larger US cities were more than about ready to say goodbye to the last remains of their street railways (What to you would be electric tramways). By this time (1960s/1970s/1980s) very few cities still had electric surface railways (that is, rail lines within a city that operated on city streets, not below them in tunnels or above them on "elevated railway" girders and ironwork) in operation of any capacity. In fact, the only two locations I can think of with any sizable fleet of electric streetcars (The US equivalent of trams, we also more commonly like to call them "trolleys") were the South Eastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA)'s routes in/around Philadelphia Pennsylvania, and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA)'s "Green Line" and "Ashmont-Mattapan High Speed Line" in and around Boston, Massachusetts. By this time, both companies, and any other for that matter, was using aging equipment that was built between the mid 1940s and the early 1950s. They were all of a similar basic design, the President's Conference Committee, or "PCC" car. The trouble with American street railways, was that nothing was standard, both across and even within a particular system. Every line had a variety of different cars with different parts, all from various different makes. And it was very costly to keep these cars running, as they all required very specific parts for a given make and model. In addition, all of them looked for the most part very dated and ancient compared to the latest in automobiles and industrial design in general. With street railways on the decline in the US, they needed a more standard design to be agreed upon so that the street railways could maintain an image of modernization, while also reducing maintenance costs. Thus, the PCC car was created to give manufacturers a standard pattern that could be minorly adjusted for each line's specific requirements (For instance, Chicago PCCs were longer in length due to high traffic, combined with more clearance, which made larger ridership possible on a single car. Meanwhile, in Boston cars were shorter to fit around the sharp curves of the city streets, and were fitted with street-facing doors for use on certain routes. They also were fitted so that two or more cars could run in tandem from one operator). But these cars needed replacing. And so, this individual would go up to these companies with their large fleets of PCC cars ripe for retirement, and he would buy as many as he could, and ship them off to be stored in a location in Windber, Pennsylvania, where they were all lined up in an old railway yard where normally streetcars would never have so much as come near. Over time, more and more retired cars were dropped off at the site. It's said that he's made a buisness of using them for supplying parts to the secondhand PCC market, and there is some sort of company website in existence to back this up. Most of the cars are well rotted away, and gutted of parts by vandals as nearly all are exposed to the elements. But they make quite a site! This famous "Streetcar Graveyard" is a popular sight for photographers, but perhaps not the best place to purchase your next plaything. However, despite this, there are certainly some serviceable cars out there. My main interest is in the former Maintenance-of-Way (Permanent Way in UK I believe?) equipment from the MBTA. There are a few cars there that started life as passenger carrying vehicles, but were later rebuilt to better suit the important task of maintaining/repairing the street railway line. These cars generally have platforms on the roof for repair work on the overhead wire, and some have massive doors fitted on the sides for easy loading so that fill advantage can be taken of the storage space in the car for tools and material. Each car is unique or one of very few, rebuilt by the company that employed them. I have a deep fascination for the M.o.W. equipment of the street railway, and these are my favorite sort of equipment. Sadly, as they do not carry people, nor look very pretty to the general public, few such cars have survived being cut up for scrap. A shame considering the very important job they once performed!
@lmm
@lmm 5 лет назад
Oh yes, I think we got exceedingly lucky. It's a really nice idea the individual managed to save so many of the he trolleys and then such a shame that they have been allowed to rot away. The converted trams for doing maintenance on the overhead powerlines are very interesting indeed!
