I am over fifty. I feel a very strong regret that you cannot imagine when I follow travelers who enjoy the beauty of life and exploring nature on their motorcycles... I was twenty years old and my friends rode motorcycles and I was not completely interested... Yes, many times I thought about buying a bike... but it passed. For years, I did not... Now I feel very regretful because I did not try owning a motorcycle... Your comment is that you are thinking of a project similar to maintaining a motorcycle, since you are an expert in cars. I tell you, do not hesitate. Do this, as it may open a new window to life and enjoyment for you. And if you did not like the experience, at least you had an experience and you will not regret it afterward. My greetings to you...and I wish you well and safety 🏍👍🏻 Greetings from Kingdom of Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦 🌴...good luck

Having been a professional mechanic for 41 years (cars, trucks, heavy equipment) and a motorcycle owner/rider for longer that that, I like mechanical stuff. That guy on Bikes and Beards seems to know nothing about mechanical stuff, and I have cringed so many times watching his videos. He has taken rare, vintage bikes, in one case a still in the crate Norton Commando, and treated it like a trashed out late model Chinese bike. I am very meticulous when I work on anything of my own.

The trick is... carry a tube of silicon grease (brake grease) with you! I've got a kilo of the stuff in the garage in tubes and any time a rubber or plastic component won't slide back together, out with the silicon grease. The good thing about it is twofold: it doesn't react with the rubber or plastic and it does eventually soak into rubber surfaces leaving them slightly more flexible and just as grippy as they were without the grease.

Mt 97 TBird 900 is coming up to 30k miles and is still going strong. Pretty easy work on as long as you don't mind the PITA airbox and the very specific tool needed to get spark plugs out. But otherwise perfect. Head turner bike for £3k. Great round town and big enough engine for the motorway. Just finished a tour around France and Belgium (Dart marlin screen with the little extender thingies made 80mph cruising fine). I could pay 10k for a new speed twin but who wants to spend that money on a bike. I could get a Blackbird but too tempting to go too fast for me and sounds like an inline honda (no offence guys). I could get a 10k adventure bike, but again, who wants to spend that. My Triumph runs great, will zip through the traffic at Hampton Court or take me to the Vosges mountains. It's probably worth about 2k, but still going strong. If you are thinking of getting one, and own a socket set, do it! If something does go wrong they are fairly basic tech that can be wrangled with a Haynes manual and a few RU-vid videos.
