i have just river soil and root based plants , they been growing for long time , but give them good light , they get their nutrients through fish waste, the fish waste will be filtered into soil , so give it a try

I'm in the process of trying to add stratum under my sand. I'm losing the battle, but its getting in there! I can say, the growth with 4 pounds of stratum in there right now is exponentially greater for my sword plants than just sand and root tabs!! They have literally grown 3" in a week. I had to cut them back because of a crash, and I thought they were dead.

As long as the tank is well established and has plenty of nutrients such as fish poop in the gravel most plants will live, trust me I've done it for years, API leaf zone is also a great product to use and so is root tabs

One of the biggest problems with just gravel is bioload. One betta? Not growing many plants. A school of fish, depending on size, can keep even vallisneria happy. If all else fails, freeze some dirt in ice cube trays and shove it in under your gravel, just plan on cleaning your tank a few times after that.

Valid response so basically just be conscious of a proper fish to plant ratio?
@wheelbite14

@Romeo Cano Yup. I don't gravel vac my gravel tanks anymore, but I still swap out several gallons of water at water change time. A pre filter on the HOB helps keep a lot of the big debris out between changes, so the water stays clear. From my experience, easy plants are fine with that setup, but dirted tanks are still the way to go since the plants have an easier time acclimating to the nutrient rich soil and can start propagating sooner.

I've gotten into house plants growing outside the aquarium and the roots dangling into the water. Great for the plants, great for cleaning the water. There are lots of RU-vid videos about this.

As a gravel tank owner there is one quick easy way to have a planted gravel tank. The first few weeks just add liquid fertilizer until the tank has matured My definition of a matured tank is low maintenance, which is a stable tank that has it's own stable ecosystem that does not require water changes when the plants can filter the water and the fish can fertilize your plants through nitrogen cycling

I Plant swords and crypts in pond baskets with eco complete. I dose liquid fertilizers which the plants absorb easily through their roots that over time extend outside the openings in the plant baskets. I have been told by many of my channel followers that they have never seen healthy, giant swords and crypts like mine. More ways to "skin a cat" in growing aquarium plants

I had a pure sand substrate, no dirt or aqua soil underneath, I am a firm believer in father fishes teachings, never had a single issue with growing a full, healthy plant. About once a month a add a little fertilizer. Haven’t lost a single plant and they are all growing a thriving.

Start with dirt Cap with Gravel. Go to kroger and buy some tilapia, cut it up and bury it deep in that substrate.

Not to mention most fish don’t like a gravel substrate and would prefer a more sandy/silty substrate

This is BS. Plants will grow just fine in gravel and have for a hundred years of the hobby. See all that brown water in the gravel? There’s plenty of nutrients in the gravel of an established tank. And if there isn’t then a couple of root tabs will put it right.
