Engineering knits is a place for people who enjoy all kinds of vintage and antique crafts - from sewing to knitting, crochet to embroidery I like to try it all. I definitely have a preference for historical fibre crafts, and it is my dream to one day make an entire outfit from sheep to sweater. I hope you enjoy watching me and my favorite companion, Nutella, struggle through some fascinating projects!

I think you should put your knitting machine on wheels and win the world record on a technicality.

A harness setup, like what drummers in marching bands use, would probably be safer and easier. Attempting to hold a trumpet stable enough to sound okay while marching is already difficult!

It is ok to fail, I think we have become very programmed to not to fail and be the best at everything we do, just trying to run a marathon while knitting is a great feat and whatever happens you are amazing to even try. Would love to see you finish the jumper.

And trying but not finishing isn’t the same thing as “failing” anyway, IMO. Trying is trying!

As someone who knits, and has run 4 marathons, all I can say is OOOOOF! For me, personally, I can tell you that by the end of a marathon just having arms down by my side is a chore. I cannot even begin to imagine having to hold (and knit) a scarf up in front of me for that whole time. Best of luck to you in this crazy endeavor!

this is such a fun post. one recommendation... use circular needles so that you don't have to stop running if you accidentally drop a needle when you run.

Thought: for the marathon you could have yarn stations like water stations so you don’t have to carry all of your yarn the entire time. I’m sure people from your followers (myself included!) would LOVE to support you and cheer you in your attempt! We could even get some footage for you so you can focus on your record and still get content!

Have you seen the interviews with David Babcock? He had to finger knit when he was running in some of the races he did, because they didn’t allow tools during run. Also he crochets pieces for him to wear and unravel while he runs so he doesn’t need to carry big balls of yarn. Smart😀

What a fun (possibly slightly mad) idea! Have fun while you train. And if this attempt turns out to be another step on your training routine, you can always try again. You'll never lose the health benefits, & you'll have an adorable jumper for running in. Best wishes from Czechia!

I don't know if anyone has suggested it or if you've seen them before, but there are yarn holders you can wear on your wrist! You put a yarn cake on a stick with a base that's then connects to a wrist band. They are literally made for you to be and to knit/crochet while standing or moving about! 😊 I've seen them listed as "yarn keeper bracelets" or "wrist yarn holders"

Yes, exactly. I've never been that active or sporty of a person, but if I spend the whole day crocheting and watching videos, I feel like crap. I've got to get out and go for a walk at least. It's important to have some balance. Good luck on your goals!

Please keep us updated. One of the things that changed my views on exercise was moving from “all or nothing” to “all or something”. So I try not to beat myself up if I don’t meet some impossible goal but celebrate whatever I do manage to do.

I’m so inspired. I got into knitting after decades of pursuing a dance career and when my body and heart was feeling broken and exhausted. Knitting rescued me in a way that I wasn’t expecting, and now it’s been 6 years and I still heavily rely on knitting and sewing and spinning to keep myself balanced and inspired. I’m still dancing and it is my main source of income, but the way that my life shifted when I started crafting was more significant than I realized. Whatever happens through this marathon pursuit, I’m so inspired and impressed. Your body is more than your brilliant mind and hands, and whatever happens is yours to be proud of, however far you get❤ I’m rooting for you!!!

Regardless of whether you manage to break the record or not, i think it's amazing that you're challenging yourself. It's OK not to succeed at everything and don't at all be embarrassed! The point is as long as you can say you've given it your best shot you've succeeded by simply pushing yourself to do something you ordinarily wouldn't be doing, if that makes sense?!?. Would love updates on how you get on.

Normally I don't have much to say in response aside from commenting on cute lil' Nutella, but I do feel like I may have a little helpful nugget of info here. Merino wool T-shirts are totally a thing today, and not for the purpose of making you sweat! Wool is insulating whether you're in cold or heat, and unlike other materials wool can continue to keep you warm even when wet (thinking of my wintertime bike commutes, in the Pacific northwest rain). It also wicks well, which can be really handy in summer. I love riding my bike in summer wearing my wool T-shirt!

I'd second this. I don't think I'd wear a sweater in any material as a base layer when running in summer, but definitely not a cotton one! I can't see any way this doesn't get hopelessly soggy by mile 3, bag out and weigh you down and just be horribly uncomfortable. It'd be really cute for the post-race refreshments though!

What a fun attempt - both the marathon and this sweater! I love your sweater design, and would definitely love to see how it turns out, if you’re comfortable sharing. ♥️ Your knitting and running video was a lot of fun!!! 😁♥️ And even just training to attempt this is HUGE! I doubt many attempting such an ambitious world record actually succeed in actually making the attempt, and of course many don’t finish marathons. I know those who were training for one, but didn’t end up running. Health is so important, so even training, as you said, is great for your health. But making an attempt when your body isn’t ready, as you know, could lead to injury, and I know that you don’t want to deal with that again. So, my hat is off to you, and wildly waving in the air, for even training for the attempt. If you end up pulling out, I’ll definitely understand, as I’m sure most will and all should. I definitely won’t think less of you if you pull out from starting (or training) at some point, or if you start and don’t finish. I’d be willing to bet others feel the same. I admire those who can run far, something I’ve never been able to do. I can hike for hours and hours, win a canoe race, etc., but I don’t have the lungs for running and don’t seem to be able to develop them. So I admire your ability to get out there and run so far!!! ♥️

Love this video! I’m a knitter and a runner though never at the same time! Marathon training is not to be underestimated so I wish you all the best! One note though, cotton is perhaps not ideal to run in as it doesn’t wick away perspiration very well and will become heavy, clingy and uncomfortable. Merino is actually ideal for this. Before you decide what to wear try wearing the top on some of your training runs. Wish you every success, can’t wait to see how you progress! ❤❤❤

I have supported my sister while she has run many marathons. A big issue with clothing is chaffing. Make sure your yarn is slippery and that it doesn't bind around the arm holes, etc. You could also wear something underneath the sweater if you begin to find chafing to be an issue. Do at least one long practce run in the sweater before the day.

Having a goal is a great way to get yourself to do the Things that lead up to The Goal. I'm finding that every time I stop doing aThing and then try to start doing it again, the older I get the harder it is both mentally to make the time and physically to make the body do the body things without too many anti-inflammatories, but if I can DO it, the emotional results are well worth it. I'm going to start jogging again after a few years off due to stupid knee, and a couple failed starts due to shinsplints, but I think (with the help of my physiotherapist) I've finally figured out what was being stupid and I'm pretty sure I have a solution for both issues. And I do hope you succeed, but if you don't, I hope that you're able to realize how much better off you are for having tried at all. That's one thing about me and all my crafts, I don't always succeed and sometimes I just have to scream and throw something in the UFO pile for a while till my skills catch up to my ideas (yes there are a few things that've been in there a decade or more, I have a lot of crafts and a lot of dreams), but at least I try. And I keep trying. And sometimes people compliment me on how good I am at something, but I'm not, actually, I just kept trying... I'm not really that good at anything, I'm just persistent. I remember one mid-level martial arts test where when I had completed it, I was convinced I should be busted back down to the very first beginner level because my sensei kept asking me to do do a particular technique and I just couldn't make it happen, I kept doing other things instead, but the fact that I just kept trying led to a few other beautiful if unexpected techniques, and a pass from my sensei even though I was in tears by the end of it, because apparently, the point wasn't to do THAT technique, it was to show that I had a solid enough basis in general that I was ready for the next level.

I have completed 2 marathons and now do long distance backpacking. I took lace wt and a circ needle hiking with me but was so exhausted at the end of the day that I accomplished little knitting. Just running a marathon in itself is exhausting. You swing your arms to propell yourself. Can you walk it? Try walking a marathon’s length while knitting first. And I think crocheting with a plastic hook might go easier and also lighter .Is there a record for a crochet scarf? Weight is going to be a factor for that distance. You want light wt. clothing too.How long a scarf is the current record? Might be better to go very slow and speed knit enough to beat the record then run the rest of the race. Is there a cut-off time for your marathon. If not, I guess it would be possible to go very slowly while knitting and finish in 12 hours.Good luck!

Gosh, this would look great as a tank top which might make something better to run in than a sweater with short sleeves. As for knitting while running, I seem to remember reading about how when one had to walk everywhere, say the 1700's-1800's, women could waste no time as they walked from one farmstead to another or into town and would clamp a needle under one arm rather than hold each in a hand. Wish I could find the reference or a picture but in the process of googling, I discovered that walking and knitting is quite a thing these days.
