I am eager to learn this skill. I'd watch!! I used to be an upholstery buyer in NY. Learning this skill would be a great addition to have in my wheelhouse.
This is the first time I come across your RU-vid channel. I can’t tell you how much fun I had watching you reupholster that chair. When I was growing up, my mother always reupholstered our sofas, because we couldn’t afford new furniture. I want to say we had the same sofa when I was a kid until I graduated high school…in its many different iterations. The only difference was that she only had a Singer factory machine. She didn’t have a serger or any of the other machines your friend had. She did it all on a regular factory sewing machine that she purchased in New York City in 1971. I have that machine now. She could make anything on that machine, from my father’s suits to my prom dresses, and everything in between…curtains, tablecloths, quilts, and much more. My mother was the kind of person who would see a torn up chair or couch on the side of the road and she would have my dad go pick it up and by the following week, we had a brand new piece of furniture sitting in the living room. I loved that my mother was a recycler of sorts, and I’m so glad to see that there are people out there like you who are learning old world crafts like upholstery. Good luck in all you’re doing to make our world more beautiful!
I have done upholstery. I've seen what's underneath. I won't bring into my house any old pieces of furniture that have been upholstered. There are potential insect problems.
SUGGESTION..you should create, make, rehab or renovate a piece of furniture and sell it in each state. Dont forget to sign the piece and number them 1/50, 2/50...etc. You are simply a great inspiration to all!!!
Right?! Every time I makeover a piece, I find just the right hidden spot to write my secret message. Peekaboo! 👀 and glue little googly eyes. Reupholstered with love. Signature in City, State on Date
I am trying to reduce my carbon footprint on this earth and I cringe and sigh when I read these insipid comments. Imagine the carbonfootprint of shipping pieces of furniture throughout the nation.
Upholstery isn’t too bad when you have the proper tools. My mom showed me how, and 70 years ago, I still upholster with very old tools. But we finally bought an electric staple gun. Great going ladies‼️🤗
I watch my dad reupholster furniture when I was little and then eventually he got a auto upholstery shop so I watched him do cars now my son does it.. my son is really good he does high dollar show cars and I'm so proud of him he's so smart and he does such good work❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊
My son was baby doll for real. Tim Doll and his cousin was Tom Doll. When I was married to his father my name was Barb Doll. The irony. My father in law named his truck eventually a semi had there names on the fenders and the truck was baby doll. Sorry if you didn’t want hear our story.
I am also a professional upholsterer . I've been retired now for about 15 years. It was fun watching you take it apart and put it back together and using the same tools and method I used. I loved my job but after 30 years it was pretty hard on my back, knees and wrists. Not many girls would do this kind of work, I'm the only other girl I know that made a good living doing it. Good job ladies and good luck.
Been upholstering for years. I lost my home and business to a fire. I’m using that same table can you ask Christl how to make the wooden top you added? I had fun watching you young girls. Gives me hope that the art will not be lost. Upcycle 4ever❤
It’s a rectangle 2x4 frame with 1/2 plywood on top and then sound board on top of that ( so I can stick pins into it). Then it’s upholstered with canvas that I change out once a year because I’m messy with spray glue.
Everybody, if you don’t already know how, learn upholstery and how to operate a sewing machine, you won’t regret it. I learned and added it to my business about 6 years ago and wish I would’ve learned it 20 years ago. The opportunities are endless.
You are SO right. My only regret was not knowing to buy a machine with an adjustable height presser foot shank. I didn't find out that this was even a thing until I tried to sew through several layers of thick fabric+buckram and found I'd bought the little machine that couldn't, and never would. Still saving for that higher end machine.
Crystal has a wonderful upholstery shop and some high end sewing machines to do the job right. Loved watching you ladies give an old chair new purpose. I loved the fabric btw!
Tip#1…buy a lesser expensive sewing machine and learn the in’s and outs of threading the machine and bobbin tension and just make pillows with piping. #2…use a block under pedal to control speed until you get the hang of it. #3…start small, ie, a foot stool, ottoman, headboard with tufting, etc. Sewing and upholstery and drapery are so fun!
Crystal is an excellent teacher! She was so patient and let you work at your own pace. I hope she does pursue her own channel. We all could benefit so much from her teaching. You did a great job on that chair!
I paid to have my couch re-upholstered, and it was worth EVERY penny!! Cristal's studio set up blew my mind, so many machines that have different jobs....where I would have to use my one sewing machine. The chair is stunning! I can definitely see you doing a project like this one day!
@@flippedbyabby My issues are with off gassing with new furniture. I have chronic health issues that make me chemically sensitive. Buying used furniture means all the off gassing has already happened. I wanted to share this with you, because this is another reason why saving furniture the way you do is important!!!
My daughter signed me up for a class, but the teacher basically turned down my pieces. No cushions, too big,too ambitious so it was basically a class to cover ottomans and dining chairs. I rescued a gorgeous mid century sofa with a great frame n detail that I’m dying to do. Crystal should start a channel!
First of all, I love the green!!! Green is my favorite color. This chair looks terrific!! Be patient, learning how to upholster, takes a long time. There are so many variables to learn. An elderly friend taught me how to upholster, and even after a year or so, I still felt there was so much more that I needed to learn!
Nice job ladies. My parents had a custom drapery shop for years and I learned a lot including upholstery and drapery installation. It's great to see the next generation learning these skills.
My absolute favorite color! That chair has amazing lines and style. I would totally put that in my house. My parents had a very expensive well built couch they got when they were first married. It survived us four older kids and then sat in the basement for a while when it started getting tattered. Mom hung on to it. Ten or twelve years later, when my younger siblings were little, mom has the couch reupholsteted. It had a very sturdy hardwood frame. A professional redid it and it lasted another 25 years. It needs reupholstered again but frame is still good 50+ years later.
You are such a joy to watch, i love that you are humble and let her teach you a new skill. I hope in the future someday she will go to your studio to learn your skills. Great video, i really enjoyed it.
I winged it and reupholstered sofas and chairs. But they are for us so I didn’t have to be professional. I had to use a hand staple gun. I didn’t have any pneumatic tools. That’s soooo much faster and easier!! I’m a sewer so I figured “how hard can it be?” The measuring for fabric is the hard part. Always buy way more than you think you need. I would def go somewhere to go learn in a couple of days!! Oh my gosh that discount fabric store!!! We don’t have them near me anymore. We had soooo many in Philly years ago. The owners retired and nobody wanted the businesses. Sad but true. I used to also make wedding dresses and these stores in Philly had that fabric as well. There was a whole street dedicated to fabrics. They are simpler than regular clothes. There is just a lot more fabric to move around. That’s ag lol I drive my sewing machine like I’m in a drag race sometimes. I can’t help myself. I’m like how it sounds. 😂. Oh piping. My nemesis. 😂Needless to say none of my reupholstered furniture has any. When I see a great chair on marketplace that I wanna redo if it has piping I’m like “hard no”. She makes it look so stinkin easy!!! You are a natural. Go girl!! Now I really wanna take a class. I have to see if the vocational school still has night classes for adults. Back in the day they had so many but I wasn’t old enough. My dad took car body repair and woodworking. He patched his car and repainted it. He made us a huge toy box. I’d call that a win.
I gave away two fabulous Hollywood Regency chairs because I couldn't find any classes in reupholstery. I put them out in front of my house, and they were gone in less than 30 minutes. I hope they found a great home.
Yes please Crystal start a RU-vid channel. Great job especially for someone who had never touched a sewing machine. Thank you sew much Ladies, very enjoyable👏👏💋👌❤
I often see old chairs in interesting shapes but don't pick them up because I don't know how to reupholster. You ladies did such a great job and so fast!
If you do decide to give it a try, check that the springs and frame are in good shape before you purchase your piece. The piece in the video was was exceptional in that all of the springs, foam, and padding were nearly perfect and needed no repairs. It was also very, very clean under the fabric. I've never had that kind of luck. when I did my first piece I just dove in, took lots of pictures and notes along the way so I could remember how it all went back together and it turned out ok. We used that sofa for years even though I cut the seat cushions exactly wrong. No one ever noticed.
Several years ago I got the itch to take an old wing back chair my neighbor threw out and re upholster it. I didn’t a lot of research and watched a ton of videos. It turned out ok and took a whole weekend to do. And we still use it in my daughter’s room. But.. never again! It was stressful. 😆 but I will watch her videos because I love learning new skills
Very cool excellent job. I think any job is made easier with the right tools, but with that being said the beginning to end was a definite process that does also require a skill set. Your friend was a good teacher. It all looked so satisfying.
This episode was soooo much fun to watch! Please make more of these where you go out to experts at their crafts to show all of us steps on how they do whatever they are good at making/creating!
@@flippedbyabby This was so awesome to watch u learn how. I’ve got an overstuffed chair that’s a hidden glider, I had it done in hot pink & piping done in the same booger green color u used. I’ve had so many people offer to buy it since it was recovered. 😂 Also I work on jewelry in a laboratory & because metal get hot & many things to tear ur fingers up, we use something called alligator tape on our fingertips, it allows u to still be able to grab, it may help u starting out w/ the stripping part mainly. And u can reuse your tape tips several times.
Thank you for the tutorial on how to reupholster! I thought I wanted to learn this trade , but now I know that it is too much work! I appreciate reupholster people! ❤👍
Upholstery is more than a skill, I think it's an art! This as amazing to watch, it seems so complicated when you see the end result but Crystal's explanations were so clear that I understood what was happening. Still, I can't imagine doing it myself & I have a whole new appreciation for the process!
Nice job. My MIL left us a similar chair she purchased in 1956 and I've always loved the lines and design. I just recovered it in black leather and it is stunning! Great content
Abby, you’re a natural at doing this. Looked like you learned so much from your friend Crystal. Her studio is incredible. Enjoyed this as an intro tutorial. Great work. Chair shape & fabric selection were beautiful. Be well. Laine, Montclair, NJ.
Wow! This was great. And the color green is having a moment. Years ago my mom suggested that I learn re upholstery. I was not into it. She used to work at an upholstery factory years ago in England before I was born and thought I had a good eye for revamping old furniture. And now my mom is gone and I wish I could go back and take her advice. I'd love to learn this skill. It's so necessary now with waste and rising costs to know how to fix and renew old things. And most older things were made better. This was a treat to watch. Now I need to find somewhere that teaches this. She really does need a channel. I'd be one of the first to subscribe. You made my day.
Abby, totally loved watching you learn a new skill. You are certainly a quick study. You had a wonderful teacher who has helped you broaden your horizons. I love watching you transform furniture and can now watch you reupholster furniture. Start with small, simple projects and work your way up. MCM furniture is not really my vibe, but that style chair looks great in that color. Good job.
I love the color, I am going to learn to upholster chairs, couches etc. There is a local gal here where I live that teaches classes, I have 2 Wing Back Chairs that I want to redo. Thank you for the video!
I don't know how you came to my feed...but I learned upholstery from my grandmother...she learned from pulling old apart and redoing. Super straight lines are so much easier. You had several compound curves & angles which are much harder. Start with stool or chair seats. Can't wait for you to do some more.
I just learned how to do it in 35 minutes. You did a great job, Crystal is a great teacher and I would feel confident to try this on my own. I am a seamstress and have made slip covers so I have a small clue. I live in Canada. That SAS store is a dream come true.
Love the avocado green. My mother had avocado and celery colored furniture in 1970 that she had had reupolstered from her good 1950's furniture. I love green. Its so peaceful feeling.
I love all the detail in this video!! Your friend is such a good, descriptive and patient teacher :) I learned a lot! And I'm so impressed she didn't need a special foot on the machine to make the piping 🤩
It is such a blessing to be able to learn in a shop with all the machinery and tools you need. And obviously, a teacher with knowledge and patience. Great video!
I really like the chair. I’m old enough to remember the olive color in my house and in my parents. It was in pretty good shaper. I think I remover that style in turquoise also in an aqua fabric which is my current color I am decorating.
I'm a year older than you, lol I've always wanted the same.matter of fact my dad was an upholsterer. He wouldn't teach me because he said it was a poor man's profession. Well, makes sense only because he was raising 8 kids with my mom. Too bad I'm in Canada.😂❤I've sewn clothes etc. Since I was 13 years old hun.
I took a reapolstry class years ago, one of the most fun creative classes that I ever took -- Great job ladies, great teacher, great student, and a very cool chair, 😊 Thank you for sharing
This young lady definitely knows her stuff. Great job on the project. 😊 I would like to have more detailed instructions. Sometimes the camera is at the wrong angle and we couldn’t see the work being done. Hope there will be more videos.
The video popped up several times on my feed, I tried to avoid it, until today. Glad I watch it. Something to watch several times when a project is at hand.
I love the chair. You did a beautiful job Crystal and Abby. Sewing is so much fun. You both are amazing. I have been sewing for years but not for a living. ❤❤❤🪡🪡🪡🪡🧵🧵🧵🧵😀😀😀
I really enjoyed this. I love to see how things like this are done. My aunt and uncle were upholsterers for years. I never got to watch them work though. Thanks for sharing the process.
Excellent work, ladies. I wish we had a discount fabric store here, but small town America doesn't compare to your area of AZ. 🎉 i have done some minor upholstery. Cushions that were attached to an antique wicker love seat. My mother used to reupholstery some of our furniture when I was young and she sewed a lot. I am sure having the proper tools makes it much easier. You are an inspiration. It's great to know not everything is thrown away, and reupholstery is still a profession people will teach to others.
