Yesterday (3/13) was my 8 year anniversary with woodworking. My father-in-law walked me through the steps of taking a 2x4 and turning it into a shadow box frame with box joints! Even though it was just pine, it still blew my mind what was hiding inside a dirty old 2x4. I was HOOKED. Thanks for sharing this journey with me!

This. This is how product development should be done. I've been in the industry for 8+ years and so many company's idea of product development is "cost reduction". Not that it's a bad thing, but it's not solving any problem, except profit margins. This clearly identifies problem and gives great solutions. Well Done!

I like the look of this jig. One quick thought though: if you offset the mounting holes for the fence pieces you could make them not just rotatable 180 degrees, but also flippable back-to-front so you could make use of all 4 corners rather than just the two. You'd just need a second op to hollow out the relief for the bolt heads on the other side. (Or a zeroth op more likely, do the drill and relief on the full panel, then flip the board and use the features you just cut to register for the rest of the milling that you're doing now)

Johnathan Thank you. As others have said I'll parrot, this is exactly what I like to see. I've noticed a major trend where woodworker RU-vid channels have gone away from making products and have shifted to other content like tool reviews. This leaves people like myself yearning for more content that shows how things are made.

Jonathan, your manufacturing process is really, really good. I am very familiar with the Fanuc controller. We had an Omni CNC in our cabinet shop in the early 2000’s and you are correct that it is probably the best controller on the market. Your Pick and Pack out portion is absolutely NEXT LEVEL, I mean Amazon NEXT LEVEL. Very impressive. Oh Ps your router plane has seen some great work. This tool I believe is superior to the OG Stanley #71. I love this tool and it was actually my very first high end hand tool I’ve ever purchased and I’m 64 and been woodworking for over 30 years. As soon as I recor from major chest surgery, I will be ordering the box joint fixture. Keep up the amazing work you do

That was quite interesting. For your next vacuum pump look into liquid ring vacuum pumps. They are used in paper production, have significant vacuum, tolerate lots of debris, are quite and run cooler than any other pump that I'm aware of. If nothing else it will be an interesting dive into tech. Water is the liquid.

Like you, I find figuring out the problem to be solved an important part of the creative process. To avoid the awkward partial key problem, when I design a piece using box joints, the size of my work piece is determined by an odd number of full keys. For example, box sides with nine 1/2” keys will result in 4.5” sides, 5 keys on one board and 4 on the other. The center key solution is another viable approach, and may be necessary when the size of the boards can’t be dictated by the keys, but I like the simple elegance of all consistent keys.

For the future, you should look into Coosa Composite Boards from Coosa Composites. Coosa Boards are made of high-density closed-cell polyurethane foam reinforced with continuous-strand fiberglass and woven roving. Coosa Boards are dimensionally stable and non-absorbent. Coosa Boards were developed as an alternative to marine-grade plywoods. The cost is comparable to marine-grade plywood and Baltic Birch plywood. It can be cut and sanded with normal woodworking tools.

really cool stuff. Couldnt you have made the 'mortise' where the pin slides in a consistent size so that you wouldn't need multiple backing plates? I would imagine you could offset the male side of the plug to be perfectly aligned and there would be less waste in MDF. Food for thought

As a long time flat bed router operator, I have to ask….. why on the cut pass of the plywood parts, do you use such a large diameter bit? This is opening up far bigger areas and reducing vacuum pressure. A smaller bit would help with hold down, and you can nest more parts.

Got my box joint jig quickly and it went together easily. A question for you: is there such a thing as a half blind box joint for the front of drawer faces, like a half blind dovetail? I'm envisioning cutting the side pieces and using them as a template for a flush cut trim with the router, but I don't want to redo the whole process if someone has already done it and made all the mistakes. Thanks.

Great video, love seeing the thought process that goes into it all and and why’s behind certain decisions. In regards to the laser engraving, is it possible to do the engraving before the CNC? Would minimize alignment issues on laser as the CNC is easier to reference afterwards. Would also reduce handling time of having to place all the pieces in and out of the laser engraving jigs?

I am curious how you adjust for slight differences in table saw miter slots? Not all of them are the exact same.

so, will this work on a router table, as some of us don't do dado blades.

If you have a 3/4 miter slot it will. You can also make your own runner using the hole pattern on the table saw runner. You would just use the alignment line on the inside of the bit

@@katzmosestools Would be nice if you would demo this working on a router. $90 is a lot to spend for a tool like that with out seeing it work on something other than table saw, which is what you developed it for.
