Can I Really Justify Seeing Pictures of Jesus In The Old Testament?

"Typology" is a fancy word for how God put intricate details about Jesus throughout the stories of the Old Testament. I'm not talking about prophecy here, although there is a relationship between typology and prophecy. I'm saying that Jesus is the main topic of the Bible so much that God shaped history and people's lives so that the Bible would become a beautiful literary tapestry that shows Jesus throughout it's pages. From the story of Joseph going from slavery and presumed death to the right hand of Pharaoh as a savior of many, to the feasts of Israel demonstrating the very nature and mission of Jesus to die for our sins.
In today's interview I will explain what "typology" is, give a number of examples of it and answer objections to it.
Thanks to Micah Gunn for having me on his podcast, Truth Be Told, to do this interview.

Sometimes when a person claims the Bible is man-made, instead of jumping into apologetics I almost feel like it would be sufficient to say "you just can't make this stuff up". The more you read and the more in-depth you study the Bible, that much becomes clear.

I so agree about the coolness behind typology. I was so lucky kid I grew up with a mother who was very biblically literate and we attended a church that was very biblically found my mother taught children in every kind of teaching atmosphere you could imagine. I learned about the typology of the Tabernacle in intricate detail from the time I was in 4th grade. Just so proud of the legacy my mom left behind in her kids. She was weak in other parenting areas but she intelligently and patiently caught her children to know the deep things of God and to seek them out. As far as I'm concerned she was a complete success as a parent

Mike you have no idea what a blessing this is to me... as a young Christian I remember distinctly reading my Bible and suddenly the the Holy Spirit illuminated Joseph as a figure of Christ... I started to look at detail after detail and it was unmistakable. I shouted to my wife hey look at this and this and even remember where I was sitting specifically. I wasn't even aware that typology existed at that point. Within days I was listening to a sermon by Dr. Adrian Rogers and his sermon was Joseph a portrait of Jesus outlining the very verses God revealed unto me... I had missed that Joseph had a gentile bride. Later I found out about A.W. Pink and gleanings in Genesis as well. Last I call myself Jeptha because he didn't get much respect from his brethren and yet when they had to fight they would call on him and I am by nature an apologist. That Jeptha is listed in the champions of the faith in Hebrews chapter 11 is encouraging to me.

I think it's possible to argue that John 4 makes the connection with Joseph as a type of Christ. There are three (admittedly slender) threads connecting John 4 with Joseph: 1. we're told that Sychar is "near to the land which Jacob gave to his son Joseph" (John 4:5) 2. Christ is called "a man who told me all things I had ever done" (John 4:29) - the Revealer of secrets 3. the Samaritans call Christ "the Savior of the world" (John 4:42) #2 and #3 seem to be a reference to Genesis 41:45 There does also seem to be a connection between the woman of Sychar and Asenath. Asenath is mentioned three times by name, and each time we're reminded she was the daughter of the priest of On. It's like we're being reminded constantly, "don't forget this is an idolater!"

I'm more interested in who people are and what groups they come from. For example, the Amalekites that attack Israel as they leave Egypt are descended from Lot's incestuous relationship with his daughter. If you aren't paying attention to the names, you might miss the fact that the Amalekites should have been friends to Israel since they shared a family history. I think God judges Amalek more harshly because of this.

One of my favorite types not discussed in NT is Numbers 35 and cities of refuge. They are Levite cities. So people flee to the priests, as we flee to our high priest. And they stay there until the death of the high priest and then can go to their inheritance. So we are set free to go to our inheritance by the death of the ultimate high priest, Jesus.

I even wondered why the heck they needed to wait for the high priest to die and just shrugged it off. That connection you just made absolutely blew my mind. A big part of my walk with God has been his revealing of these types whenever I read scripture and has been awe inspiring each time ... with a background in philosophy and psychology, I can see how it is easy to be recklessly creative because I almost fell down that hole by conflating the typological with the archetypal, and especially when it comes to things involving more metaphysical concepts ... A good litmus test for me has been to test whether they can be subjective and hence can warp the already laid out literal understanding of the bible, if the answer is yes, I steer clear, ... if they confirm said understanding or even amplify it, then I know I'm on the right path.

Surely, anyone who is truly secure in their faith should encourage questions, as it affords them the opportunity to persuade an unbeliever as to the 'truth'. Is it not a Christian duty to help spread 'the word' and save people who are otherwise doomed to hell? A legitimate set of beliefs has absolutely nothing to fear from questions. If you don't have an answer to them, that's fine, but telling someone to 'shut up' for asking a question is not only unnecessarily rude, it represents the Christian faith poorly and goes against the very Christian ideal of helping those who are 'blind' to 'see'. Attacking the questioner without attempting to answer the question often leaves the impression that your frustration stems from an inability to answer it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with not having an immediate answer to a question, and nothing wrong with saying, 'I don't know', for then you can commence the process of trying to find an answer. I have not yet had a reasonable answer to the questions of, "Why would a god require glory?", and "Why would a god ever derive glory from the acts of humans?". I have arrived at answers of my own, but I'm interested in the opinions of others.

I'd love to get your opinion, Brother Mike, on Ezekiel 9:4-6 where the Lord tells the angel (or angels?) to go throughout the city and put a mark on the foreheads of everyone who grieved over the sins being committed in Israel. The "mark" spoken of here is literally the tav, the last letter in the Hebrew aleph bet. Today it looks very different from the way it was written in Ezekiel's time. Back then it was written like our lower case "t" (without the tiny crook at the bottom)...which bears a striking resemblance to a cross. Do you suppose that that might be a foreshadowing or hint at the Messiah to come?

Very powerful video Mike! I got goosebumps and tears all throughout, especially the very strong connection to Abraham and Isaac. All throughout the old testament scriptures, Jesus is there.

Thank you for this message. I believe troubles and problems are temporary when God intervened in my family’s situation 2 years ago, taking us out of poverty of more 10 years. I and my wife, we are a retired couple who use the RMD approach. I have been drawing my RMD each year and investing it on bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies with the help of William Tuinstra, a crypto analyst to supplement our retirement SS and pensions. With the knowledge, skills and Profits we have been gaining, my wife won't have to take RMD's for ten or ever depending on whether the Secure Act 2 passes Congress but I honestly don’t care.

Here Are 3 Seeds To Plant That Could Spread Like Fire and Change This World. 1. First plan on the Georgia Guidestones is for 93% of all people to be disappeared. (That includes blacks, whites, Mexicans, Christians, and even many Democrats.) 2. True width of Washington Monument is 666 inches wide on each of its 4 sides. 3. Former elite banker Ronald Bernard says most billionaires are Luciferians (Satanic). Ephesians 5:11 says to reprove evil. Some bibles translate that as, expose evil. We still have time, so please, keep planting seeds!

“Recklessly creative” is an apt description of some Bible studies I’ve experienced. Of course there’s a ditch on both sides of the road… blatant denial of typology ignores big swaths of the New Testament.

In Abrahams story, I think the ram in the thicket is also a picture of Christ. The son of Abraham was spared by the ram with its head in a thicket. Jesus had a crown of thorns. Head in a thicket. And the people who are saved through faith are called children of Abraham. So… yeah I thought that was really cool too.

I feel like typology has value not only in finding parallels in Christianity, but in contrasting it with other religions that claim to have the same origins. After looking at how the master story plays out, something like Islam or LDS doctrine literally reads like fan fiction.

Psalms 119:18 (NKJV) Open my eyes, that I may see Wondrous things from Your law. When I got hungry enough…..well….."desperate enough that I wanted to learn from Him how to save my marriage this verse flooded my soul. I was taught by The Holy Spirit that the Word was important enough to read it cover to cover and He gave me the tool of the Navigator Ministry’s Daily Walk program to accomplish this. My marriage didn’t stay but the Word has. I have just barely scratched the surface of seeing my blessed Author of Salvation all through the Word, but the thrill of the hunt is in my veins. Philippians 3:10 (NKJV) that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death,. Thank you for being used as a tool in my particular journey

Thoughts on Samson/Christ & their typological relationship: An angelic visitation announced the miraculous conception & calling of a son who was to be savior of Israel. He was a teller of riddles/parables, handed over to the Gentiles by his countrymen, betrayed by a close companion for reward of silver & worked his greatest victory over the enemy upon his death.

Idk why I've always just mostly felt bad for Samson where Mike kind of skimmed over him as a big failure. Well yes he failed but it was always for his bride! And him falling in love with Philistines alarmed his parents but it says it was "of the Lord" so he could defeat the enemy. Samson is also a fulfillment of prophecy himself! Deut. 32:30

It’s one of my very favorite Bible themes as well. And OF COURSE it’s “Biblical,” as Jesus Himself, after He was resurrected, made it a priority to take His disciples through Moses, the law and prophets, and the psalms to show them how they spoke of HIM.

What would you say about Balaam and the donkey? I read that one day and instantly saw the Lord Jesus Christ. Balaam had sinned and was heading straight into the angel who was goin to kill him(the wages of sin is death) but that the donkey not only to save Balaam took punishment but at the end laid its life down to save him. I have to believe this was the Holy Spirit revealing Christ to me through this passage. Biblically, what does Scripture teach?
@oatmealmonkey9130
@oatmealmonkey9130 2 года назад
Biblically, the scripture teaches that the wages of sin are death, and that Jesus Christ laid down His life to save us, just as you said. I think you're spot on. I'll have to remember that one.
