Tim you should think about installing a valve on the inside of your building that way you have a quick way of shutting off if you ever had a hose break. Without having to run outside.

Just put a hose burst valve in the gasline, i have them for my oxy/acetylene set, they shut off the flow automatically when they detect a burst hose or puncture

Solenoid valve would be even better. Two in series wired together, failing closed.

Natural gas has only about 1/4 the energy as propane. It will definitely be noticeable when trying to heat metals past a certain point like if you are forge welding steel.

Great info! Thank you. I was looking at propane, natural gas, propylene. With propane you burn a lot more oxygen than acetylene, natural gas you burn less oxygen than acetylene setup does- but apparently a lot less heat than oxy propane!

I worked in a shop that used icy natural gas. They had a compressor to boost the pressure. It works, but didn't seem to get as hot as acetylene. I use oxy propane, it works fine.

That’s a very good tip of the starting of the torch. I’ve just switched to propane from acetylene as I ran out of acetylene and I was having a hell of a time getting it to start and stay running lol. I’ll try that next time I turn the torch on.

There is a proper tip for burning propane for a cutting torch many torches made them you need to find the one for your torch if it's a Victor Victor makes a propane tip for their torch you don't have to change the regulator you don't have to do nothing but change the tip the orifice in an accident is wrong for burning propane

so I've used that combo before nat gas and oxy. it's a different tip and tourch set up. the regulators are obviously different. The nat gas regulator is hard to come by to my knowledge. it dose work the cuts are not as great.

Hi Tim, I have never tried this myself but I had an old beer making buddy that was an engineer that worked on industrial natural gas cutting setups frequently. He told me it cut much cleaner than propane or acetylene with less slag and scale to knock off the cut.

Natural gas and propane burn very similar and can share the same tips and rosebuds. However, using nat gas in the place of acetylene may light but will not be very efficient as it shares with propane, it's lower in temperature but higher in BTUs than acetylene. Neutral flame with oxy-acet is hot at or very near the beginning of the flame, wheras propane is hotter towards the end of the flame.

Still waiting for a response from the gas company for approval for my line to the shop. Had to send in specs for my burner for flow. A long time process and planning for this unfortunately. The flame looks way different for cutting through camera perspective.

Unsolicited suggestion but maybe adding a valve inside where you’re making connections? You wouldn’t have to constantly go outside to turn on/off the gas and it would be your emergency off in case anything happens. We have similar setups in the restaurants just for this reason
@Comm0ut
@Comm0ut 4 месяца назад
Why is there not an emergency shutoff valve between the manifold and the natgas output? Regulators fail and are NOT a positive shutoff! Hose can leak or be damaged. Proper practice is a separate valve between the two outlets and the manifold on the inside as well as the outside so the contents of the manifold (even if you shut off the outside ball valve) do not continue flowing through a leak or failed regulator seat. Your fuel gas regulator ALSO at minimum needs a flashback arrestor as it's easy for high oxygen pressure to overcome low fuel gas pressure.

@trollingmodeactivated2500

Well naturall gas is close to propane and i have a propane oxy propane torch cut/heat set up. My guess is that since propaine or natgas burns alot hotter without added oxygen than acetylene would without oxygen, it should cut atleast as good or maybe even better than acetylene
@erikcourtney1834
@erikcourtney1834 Год назад
It cuts good and less slag I think. Doesn’t pop and carry on like acetylene does. Propane/ natural gas does not get hot as fast. Or even as hot. But it’s way cheaper and a 20lb propane bottle will last longer than a acetylene bottle will. It’s worth using in my opinion. I hate acetylene it’s dirty and actually quiet dangerous
@Flying0Dismount
@Flying0Dismount Год назад
No difference in cutting speed or capacity as it is the oxygen doing the cutting, not the gas.. Only difference would be how long it takes to preheat before cutting as the natural gas flame has less heat in it than either acetylene or propane...
@joshclark44
@joshclark44 Год назад
Very cool! Idk how much a million BTUs is but that looks like it could heat up a huge chunk of metal very fast 😄 profound I know. How are the other machines doing? Did any of them get damaged in the move or while sitting outside? Are you going to set up your shop for axes again or are you going to change things up? Personally, if you're making stuff to sell, I'd recommend making a variety of goods which I think will appeal to a wider market and be easier to sell stuff without it sitting around as much. Someone who doesn't need an axe could use a hammer for example. I love the bottle opener things btw. I just got mine in the mail a week ago on my birthday and it was a really nice birthday present to myself 😄 I think if you make smaller novelty stuff like that you could ship out a lot more for people like me without a lot of money. Still love your axes though! Beautiful works of art! Did you bring your scrap steel with you or are you going to source locally?

"Natural gas" is not propane. It's methane. Propane (and butane, they come mixed together in various ratios depending on how cold local climate is) is called LPG - liquefied petroleum gas. Methane is very different from these two. Any of these can be used with oxygen to heat, melt and cut, but none can be used for welding steel. Only acetylene can because the welding flame gives off carbon monoxide and hydrogen and that does not rust the steel. All other fuels give off carbon dioxide and water and that oxidizes the weld, ruining it.

@@MAGATRON-DESTROYNot saying I don't. But as someone who watched his grandfathers house go up in flame and subsequently had the insurance company try everything they could to not have to pay out. Do not video tape it for evidence the insurance company could use. Plus since it is not tagged and leak tested his utility company could also come and shut the gas off till it is all brought up to code and inspected.
