One thing you can do to punch these out quickly is to preheat your discs.. Just lay them on your wood stove so that they are already hot when you first put fire to them-- or you could even have them slow heating in your forge, so that once you throw them on the lathe and put the fire to it, it should already be ready to start working it.. Then you could punch them out at a much high pace. You'll just have to handle them with tongs since they are hot; which is nothing new for you. Cheers.

Love the product and love to see you iterative process. I also love your statement about price "I'm a blacksmith everything I do can be done cheaper, they are buying the process" I do leather work and do everything by hand and run into that same issue with pricing. Thank you for making that clear simple idea that it isn't just about the product that you are selling but the process and work that you put in to it.

I’ve had metal candle holders. Hate to say, I’m not a fan. You can’t light it and take it into another room with you if you wanted. Unless you also make a wood base for it…could be epic. Otherwise, it’ll be way too hot. Edit: after watching, your wax didn’t melt on the sides, which could be useful in insulting it.

Re the cracking: wax shrinks a lot, roughly 10%. Figure on multiple pours as the norm. Makes for some interesting mechanisms. Auto engine thermostats and automatic greenhouse vents are actuated by wax volume change on melting.

As for the wax cracking issue, try to let it solidify with a cold bottom while keeping the top warmer. So after you've melted the bees wax, take the cup out and put it on a thick metal base plate while you also put some insulating cover on top. This works for large ingot casting, so it might just work for wax casting too. (Though that's just insulating the top, not putting it on a metal base)
@r3nmgod
@r3nmgod Год назад
He should have also kept that very small amount of wax unmelted on the edges for insulation so its not hot to hold
@bennybooboo6789
@bennybooboo6789 Год назад
To reduce the cracking in the wax, before you pour it, stir it while it cools slightly until it goes slightly milky looking. The cooling that occurs while it is still super hot shrinks the wax too fast which causes the crack, as well as will create gaps around the wick.

That's the first Square Space add I've ever sat through. Well done Sir. And yes, great idea. I'd sign up right now if I had the extra cash. As a poor college student in the early 90's I used to heat my room by candle until I almost burned the house down. It was a huge 100mm sucker that I would leave lit while I was at class and it would be livable when I got home. But I guess there was an air bubble and it melted out the side. Luckily it burned itself out. I came home too; a melted candle, thick char marks on the furniture, a puddle of green wax on the carpet and smoke damage. But horror story aside, that thing is sweet! It must throw out a ton of heat! (While carefully supervised of course.) But what if it gained a bit of stability to help against spillage? Three little legs or a small flat plate under to store other aromatics? Cone incense or sage or roaches or what not?

someone probably pointed it out already. but if not, the cracks form cause the wax shrinks when it cools off. it probably could be avoided if you pour wax in layers instead of filling it all at once. ofc that would make it even slower.

These are awesome! Such a great idea! I like that you did some science and experimented with the size of the Wick and the bowl. Did you try using the cross shaped wick? I think that might make a bigger flame and get it hot enough to have a wider radius too. I think the bowls came out really nice although I'm not a fan of the irregular top. What you could try though, after you turn the bowls, is forging little details around the edge to make it wavy or put a bunch of corners on it so it's curvy star. Maybe try seeing if you can make some horizontal grooves in without deforming the bowl shape. It would be cool to see you forge the molds that you bend the bowls around too. The tooling that you use to make it. I'm not surprised a mere 20 sold out already tbh and I think many people would be interested in more lol maybe open up some pre-orders so people could at least order them as Christmas presents and have something to say "it'll be coming soon". I don't know how long it'll take you though so that'll be up to you. Maybe show off your website where you sell the bowls with that fancy squarespace tool I've been hearing about 😉

@drthmik
@drthmik Год назад
another thing you could do would be to season the steel I have a few carbon steel pans and a pizza/bread steel and they can be seasoned just like cast iron this is the method that works best Take the clean steel to be seasoned and heat it up till it is hot and then use canola oil (canola works second best and is WAY cheaper than the best option) and cover the entire surface, inside and outside wiping away as much oil as you can. this leaves a very thin layer Let it cool Place the steel in a cold oven upside-down and set the oven for 500ºF for an hour turn off the oven and let it cool naturally to room temperature (do not open the door) the steel will have a black color of polymerized carbon every repetition of the process will add another layer I generally do 5 layers on my pans but they are being used regularly
