Hi! Can you please make a video explaining expired makeup? I don’t quite understand what to look for specifically with powders and cream products. A few of my cream blushes and lipsticks of specific brands have developed like a film? It could be wax bloom but I don’t really know how to differentiate wax bloom from mold on products. I was decluttering my collection recently and couldn’t really find an in depth description of how to tell when your makeup is expired. Thank you!
If it doesn't change color, consistency, or performance keep using it. If you are the only one using your makeup and it's clean why would you dispose of it because of the non-scientists on RU-vid?
I hear you about dermablend (owned by Loreal right?)…it’s just that dermablend’s whole shtick is 100 percent coverage. I actually really appreciate them because anyone that struggles with skin pigmentation issues like vitiligo has a makeup option that is up to task. Certainly dermatologists love them for what it’s worth. And I use their body makeup to cover my problematic scars on my arm. If they did what you suggested they might sell more product, but I fear that it would lead them away from their mission and customers who have particular needs that the mainstream doesn’t?
That’s why the other option was to just market it as a concealer instead of a foundation. To me this makes more sense anyway because I use it to conceal my tattoos not to create a base for other makeup
The authority - Introducing Marlena Stell! You are the authority in my opinion! I love the absolute facts and behind the scenes truths! If these companies were actually SMART, they would hire you as a consultant. Thanks so much for the truth. I fully respect your knowledge and experience! Hoping you start with your own brand again! Love from Canada!
After a long day at work, took a shower ready with my dinner for my Marlenas masterclass. I have been watching her since she began and everything i learned is from this amazing woman...keep rocking these tutorials.
Great informative video Marlena! I didn't really like the JR Miracle Balm at first. I can't get any recommended shades to show up on my skin and I wear their porcelain WTF. However, I noticed that the fairer shades of balm work really well for my aging dry skin as a moisture locking PRIMER. I think they pair nicely with dryer foundation formulas like Tarte or Il Makiage. I agree about the delivery system & packaging. It's messy to use especially if you have long nails, but a tiny bit goes a long way. In that sense, it is a very good value. Also, I actually feel like my skin is improving since I've been using JR. I'm curious how these JR balms compare with Danessa's line of blurring balms. Could you compare them?
shape tape was actually my favorite concealer for years. I recently stopped wearing makeup so I dont use anything now. But I really liked the shape tape, I was surprised to hear you say it was disasterous lol...
This is one of the best videos I have seen from all my influencers! Marlena this was awesome! Very unique video ! Loved it! Please make more of these! 😃❤️
I am 43 i have Tarte's shape tape. I think people fail to realize that in order for any concealer to stay put, the formula has to be somewhat mattifying. Theres no other way around it. Shape tape is a thin concealer and not a lot is needed. If you plaster it on there of course you're gonna look like a dry mess. Ive tried more emollient concealers and they are never long lasting. People want more emollience, yet set with powder. Makes no sense. Shape tape does not require setting it. I alternate between shape tape and Estee Lauder's double wear, which is more emollient, if thatbis what you're after.
Can you do a video on the Doll 10 products and ingredients? They bot only claim “Clean” but they use Resihi mushroom as a miracle ingredient. Love your videos.
Oh girl!! You hit everysingle point that I can agree on!! THANK YOU!! Excep on Cosas and Bobbi B. face products - I don't own them. - Thank you so much for doing this video and I really hope that the brands take your advise in consideration - expecially L'oreal Mascara and Dermablend ☺
Love this video! I can't stand the Tarte Shape Tape! It looks horrible on me as I have dry skin! The Tarte Creaseless concealer looks good on me. I agree about brougie brands selling products for outrageous prices and have cheap packaging. What's that all about? ❤
Marlena, I'm in Canada and it's my understanding Dermablend is no longer being made and I am crushed, this is my product. I use a little and change the viscosity as you taught me, for the perfect coverage and dewiness. Not being made? Can you confirm this, please???
Marlena everyone of your comments about these products are right on. You are 100% right re Dior blushes - if only these mfg would hire you to consult. Agree so much hate Too Faced juvenile palettes. Great job!
Such a cool video!!! Thank you ; ) I also loved your video with Glam Girl Gabi 🤩 I would love to know if you have advice about how to make the "dryer" or overly thick products work... for instance shape tape or elf concealers -- both of which I own... would you add a teeny amount of facial oil and mix into the concealer... or would you apply a very small amount of the oil under the eye before applying? So curious how we can fix the formulas at home with these products we already own to make them work better, instead of continuing to buy more and more AND MORE trying to find the perfect product! I probably won't be cutting any of the mascara spoolies 😂
No problem with the Kosas concealer, best one for me till now, I hope they will NEVER change the formula for the paraben preservatives, when You look for the so called "clean products", you are supposed to use them cause they have a really short shelf life. When I buy the kosas concealer I don't use another product at the same time, I do not collect make up items. People who collect make up complain about the preservatives because they do not use the products, they just forget about them, they stay in the drawers.... Clean make up is not intended for people who collect make up, that is what I understand....
I repurchase telescopic bc I layer it with a voluminous mascara so it sounds like the product itself is great but it’s the packaging that makes it bad.. whew lol
One more thing I am a retired nurse and I have seen many patients come to office when they thought they had eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea when what was wrong was a fungal infections from cosmetics and skincare!
I'm more than a little neurotic about my makeup - every time I open a new product, I take my little label maker and make a label with a "use by" date, based on either the shelf life listed on the label or on the sort of standard shelf life of that kind of product. It's the only way I could think of to reliably keep track of how long I've had each product open. Otherwise, I'd be looking at a lipstick and going oh, I just bought that recently, and recently will be three or four years ago.
The dermablend was not usually meant to be used as a solo foundation it was meant to add pigment to moisturizers or other foundations for sensitive skin people who needed more coverage than what was traditionally available on the market. For people who struggle finding things that they don't react with, those pigment drops are a godsend. One drop in a moisturizer is light coverage 2 drops medium and 3 drops full. You get to pick the emollient so that you don't have a reaction ❤️
Please use solid preservatives! Remember, anthrax, botulism and staph are completely natural too! 😮 I would buy non greasy balm from Bobbie in a heartbeat! I already have oily skin at 55, I don't need more, thanks.
For me the Dior blush is perfect. I am not bothered by the packaging. The formula is Ph reactive and it just matches my complexion, contrary to other luxury blushes.
Loved this! I think part 2 should be opposite. Products that are amazing and made with great ingredients but at amazing price points. Luxury and drug store. Items you wouldn’t change a thing about.
As a former chemist, I love how to get down to the nitty gritty of the products. I have to admit I love the Telescopic (waterproof) mascara, but I think I may have an older version (or maybe the waterproof is different than the non-waterproof ones) because I don't think the wand is as floppy as the non-waterproof one you show in your video. Thanks for posting!
This is exactly what we need as consumers; honesty! This is why I have a lot of respect for you Marlena; you tell it like it is while being classy about it! There’s no disrespect or “dragging”, it helpful useful suggestions to help other brand elevate! Love you Marlena ❤️ and thank you for giving me hope that there’s still good honest beauty influencers left in the community.
I am so glad you finally spoke about Tarte Shape Tape. I have never been able to use it under the eyes for my clients. I only use it on the eyelids as an eyeshadow base.
I am shocked to hear that about shape tape. I have oily skin and I love this concealer! The important thing though is to use the tiniest amount, you really don’t need a lot.
Spot on 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 The SPF sticks from Shiseido and Supergoop drive me crazy. So much product is left behind once you’ve swiveled your way to the bottom. They need to do something about it because it’s wasteful on the consumer.
Very confused by your comments about the Jones Road Miracle Balm. I get that it's not for everyone, but it is NOT greasy. It is a BALM, big difference. Also, I just use a stippling brush and swipe it it in the pan (i use the color flushed) and I get plenty of pigmentation.
Yes! Thank you for bringing up the topic and importance of packaging. I absolutely agree with you especially with Dior and Too Faced. What Too Faced is doing worked back in 2016-2018, but now we’ve moved on from all the brights, colorful, cutesy stuff to a more cleaner, modern, simplistic era. There’s nothing wrong with cute, but do it in a more toned down, subtle way.
You're definitely not the only one, and I was thrilled to hear Marlena mention it. And I am talking about the Elf Hydrating Camo Concealer. I use it as a primer on my eyelids sometimes (I see a MUA commenting above that she does the same with Tarte Shape Tape). It definitely makes me feel less of an outsider, I may have drier skin than I had for most of my life, but it's hardly sandpaper!!!
You just made me feel like I wasn’t crazy for throwing away my Tarte Shape Tape! I bought it cuz of the raving reviews but it absolutely did not work for me. So drying and emphasizing on my under eye.
Knowledge is definitely power where beauty products are concerned! Thank you for this video, Marlena!! Brands would be wise to bring you in as a consultant!!
I’m a very working full-time mom. I used to watch multiple makeup influencers but due to time constraints , I had to choose just one. This is the best channel. Love your content.
I like the Jones Beauty products only because I think of them as skincare that moonlights as a very light makeup. I'm not an everyday makeup wearer and like JR instead of going completely naked-faced!
I miss your line so much. Pro mua here. Your eyeshadows and blushes fill my kit. No talc and fabulous colors. I also agree with everything you said in this video.
Marlena, GREAT VIDEO. You are so knowledgeable and impart such good information. THANK YOU MUCH. I always wonder when I purchase a product that is not packaged well or performance is questionable.... does anyone from the manufacturer even test it? how does it get good reviews? I wonder about that all the time with the packaging of food products. HAS ANYONE TRIED OPENING THIS DAMN THING?!!! Love smart and nice packaging. Thank you for your great videos.
When you mentioned the telescopic mascara I was like uh oh..but then your reasoning for not liking the product is the same reason why it’s hard for me to use! I will say though I love it for the wand!
Thank you so much! I love your videos, they are so helpful and make me a wiser consumer. I’ve been a long, long time follower 10+ years. Now, I share all of ur makeup videos with my teen who’s just getting into makeup, she loves how you break things down for us. Ur so informative and transparent. Thank you Marlena ❤
I am 60 years old and I bought the tarte shape tape . I agree it was the absolute worst. It was like putting cement on my face and making me look older than I am! You for addressing this product
Sodium Benzoate, Ach! I am so allergic to this preservative. Allergist ran a NAPT patch test and BAM! Sodium Benzoate among other chemicals. It’s used in everything. Toothpaste, home cleaning products, soaps(looking at you Cetaphil 👀) Thank you for this amazing video. 🙏🏻❣️
Thanks. Great video. As a scientist, I totally agree with you about the preservatives. I'd rather have preservatives that keep the microbes at bay, than a product that cultures mold- or bacteria.
Kosas is gross both my foundation and concealer had black mold inside and smelled rancid after only 8 months , I will never use them or any other scam clean beauty brand again. Only trusted brands that use proper preservatives. Thanks for bringing this to light Marlena ❤
I absolutely love the miracle balm. My skin is so dry that it works for me. Some colors are more pigmented than others. And it does dry down after a bit.
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! Shape Tape was my first experience with the hype created by influencers who have been bought and paid for! That product is an absolute waste and I’m now being more cautious before purchasing a product based on someone’s video.
I add a little bit of elf camo cc cream to miracle balm and it dries it out and looks like I have a slight sheen vs disco ball sheen, plus adds coverage.
Out all of the products mentioned I've only tried/used the mascara and Kosas concealer.. Totally agree on the mascara. Do not understand the hype around it🤷🏻♀ As for the concealer.. while I didn't experience anything weird with it, perhaps because I always only have one concealer on the go, I haven't repurchased it.. but then, I rarely repurchase the same concealer🙈😆 I like trying new ones😁🤷🏻♀ Edit: btw, I think it's really sweet of you to offer these companies FREE advice on how to improve their product!🙌🏼 I feel like that should be a paid job 😃👌
I was starting to doubt my horrible experience with the elf hydrating concealer because it seemed liked by many! I would apply it all over the face like my other ones and it was patchy and exaggerating lines and texture, just horrible anywhere that wasn’t the back of my hand. 😩
